by Rhys Ford

Auction Theory: Introductory Exercises with Answer Keys (Springer Texts in Business and Economics)

by Felix Munoz-Garcia Pak-Sing Choi

This textbook provides a short introduction to auction theory through exercises with detailed answer keys. Focusing on practical examples, this textbook offers over 98 exercises that predict bidders&’ equilibrium behaviour in different auction formats, along with the seller&’s strategic incentives to organize one auction format over the other. The book emphasizes game-theoretic tools, so students can apply similar tools to other auction formats. Also included are several exercises based on published articles, with the model reduced to its main elements and the question divided into several easy-to-answer parts. Little mathematical background in algebra and calculus is assumed, and most algebraic steps and simplifications are provided, making the text ideal for upper undergraduate and graduate students. The book begins with a discussion of second-price auctions, which can be studied without using calculus, and works through progressively more complicated auction scenarios: first-price auctions, all-pay auctions, third-price auctions, the Revenue Equivalence principle, common-value auctions, multi-unit auctions, and procurement auctions. Exercises in each chapter are ranked according to their difficulty, with a letter (A-C) next to the exercise title, which allows students to pace their studies accordingly. The authors also offer a list of suggested exercises for each chapter, for instructors teaching at varying levels: undergraduate, Masters, Ph.D. Revised and updated for the second edition, this textbook includes new and expanded exercises as well as a mathematical appendix to help students review basic math and statistical properties frequently used throughout the book. Providing a practical, customizable approach to auction theory, it is appropriate for students of economics, finance, and business administration. This book may also be used for related classes such as game theory, market design, economics of information, contract theory, or topics in microeconomics.

Audible Loss: New Music and the Crisis of Memory

by Andrea Zarafshon Moore

An innovative and much-needed critical work on music and memorialization in relation to AIDS, 9/11, and anti-Black violence in AmericaMusic has long served as a powerful medium for communal mourning and remembrance in times of crisis. Audible Loss examines musical responses to three major crises in US society at the turn of the twenty-first century: the AIDS epidemic, the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, and the ongoing conditions of anti-Black violence.Analyzing a range of works written to commemorate these losses, Andrea Zarafshon Moore explores how contemporary classical music (aka “new music”) frames and narrates these crises, gives voice to grief, imagines other possibilities, and makes loss audible. These crises are read alongside one another to reveal the ways they are mutually imbricated, while also recognizing the sheer commemorative dominance of 9/11 in this century. Attending to broader debates and discourses through which commemoration is always filtered and the ways interpretive consensus has been sought and articulated in both musical and other memorial forms, Moore probes the conventional claims of commemoration, particularly those for the necessity of remembrance to “healing” and the prevention of future crises.Audible Loss concludes by reflecting on the limits of existing commemorative forms and the possibility, even necessity, of new ones. Taking the COVID-19 pandemic as a case study, it proposes that while memorials of all kinds may provide outlets for collective remembrance and even mourning, their power to forge a sense of collectivity is diminished as public discourse grows more fragmented. Deeply informed yet highly approachable, Audible Loss is a major contribution to the fields of music and memory studies and essential reading for anyone interested in memory culture in the United States today.

Audiovisual Healing and Reparation: Recuperative Affect of Mediation (Routledge Research in Cultural and Media Studies)

by Özgür Çiçek Özlem Savaş

Audiovisual Healing and Reparation gathers a collection of scholarly and creative voices that explore how audiovisual media can serve as a catalyst for healing, reparation, resilience, care and hope. The contributors critically engage with the audiovisual mediations of harsh histories and experiences of violence, discrimination, racism, sexism, colonialism, displacement, illness and death, all situated within diverse historical, geographical, social, and political contexts. Through a reparative approach to films, documentaries, digital and social media, and art, they examine how audiovisuality intervenes in and transforms trauma, rupture, loss and silence. This book examines audiovisual media as a rich aesthetic, social and political site for acknowledging wounds, seeking healing, and reparatively reimagining a broken world during troubling times. It argues for the recuperative affect of audiovisuality, which can unlock silenced or suppressed (personal) histories by integrating them into the fabric of mundane daily life. It analyses two major questions: What kind of recuperative potentials can emerge from audiovisual mediations of troubling times? How can we (re)imagine audiovisual mediums, narratives, aesthetics, and practices as reparative possibilities? This book will be of interest to scholars working in film and media studies, cultural studies, memory studies, performance studies, and affect studies and will also inspire practitioners of audiovisual media.

Audiovisuelle Diversität in Kinder- und Jugendmedien: Die Darstellung von Cartoon-Held:innen in der Animationsserie „She-Ra and the Princesses of Power“ (Medienbildung und Gesellschaft #54)

by Denis Sasse

Auerbach's Renaissance: Rebirths of an Aesthetic from Shakespeare to Ferrante

by Chris Warley

Erich Auerbach's Mimesis is among the most admired works of literary criticism of the last hundred years. Amidst the horrors of the Second World War, Auerbach's prodigious learning managed – almost miraculously – to give voice to a delicate, subtle optimism. Focusing on Auerbach's account of Renaissance literature, Christopher Warley rediscovers the powerful beauty of Mimesis and shows its vitality for contemporary literary criticism. Analysing Auerbach's account of Renaissance love lyric alongside Woolf's To the Lighthouse, fifteenth-century Burgundian writing alongside Ferrante, and Shakespeare alongside Michelet, Ruskin and Burckhardt, Auerbach's Renaissance traces an aesthetic that celebrates the diversity of human life. Simultaneously it locates in Auerbach's reading of Renaissance writing a challenge to the pessimism of today, the sense that we live in an endless present where the future looms only as a threat. Auerbach's scholarship, the art he learns from Dante, Rabelais, Montaigne, and Shakespeare, is a Renaissance offering democratic possibility.

by Joachim Schünemann Jörg Holzhäuser

by Kim Dede
