Spatial Data Analysis With R (Advanced Quantitative Techniques in the Social Sciences)
by Danlin YuThis is an introduction for social science students to the growing field of spatial data analysis using the R platform. The text assumes no prior knowledge of either, beyond the contents of an introductory statistics course. It uses the open-source software R, and relevant spatial data analysis packages, to provide practical guidance of how to conduct spatial data analysis with readers′ own data sets. The book first briefly introduces students to R, covers some basic concepts in statistical data analysis, and then focuses on discussing the central ideas of spatial data analysis. All the discussions are supported with R scripts so that students can work on their own and produce results that the book helps interpret. Each chapter ends with review questions to test understanding. The book is suited for upper-level undergraduate social science students and graduate students, and other social scientists who are interested in analyzing their spatial data with R. A companion website for the book at https://edge.sagepub.com/yu includes R code and data for students to replicate the examples in the book. The password-protected instructor side of the site includes exercises and answers which can be set for homework.

Stoicism (Ancient Philosophies)
by John SellarsThis new edition of Stoicism provides an introduction to one of the most influential schools of philosophy in antiquity, the influence of which has persisted to the present day.Originating in Athens around 300 BCE, Stoicism flourished for some five hundred years and has remained a constant presence throughout the history of Western philosophy. This new revised edition takes into account the wealth of scholarship that has been published in the last 20 years and the explosion of interest in Stoicism as a practical guide for living today. It begins with a complete introduction to the ancient Stoics, their works, and how they formulated their own philosophical system. The chapters then thoroughly examine the three core branches of Stoic philosophical doctrine – logic, physics, and ethics – while the final chapter provides an account of the Stoic legacy from later antiquity to now. The book also includes a chronology, useful glossaries, and a guide to further reading. This accessible, authoritative guide is an ideal introduction to the philosophy of Stoicism that stands behind much of the practical advice offered by Seneca, Epictetus, and Marcus Aurelius, suitable for students and general readers.
Stories of Human Resilience in a Changing Climate (Routledge Focus on Environment and Sustainability)
by Silvia Anna Ainio Susanna GionfraStories of Human Resilience in a Changing Climate offers a captivating glimpse into the human face of climate change.Despite extreme climate-related events witnessed globally, many struggle to connect such global phenomena to their own lives in a tangible way. As a result, there is still a strong disconnect between the general awareness of climate change and the sense of urgency that inspires action. This book fills a critical void in the field by sharing 11 real-life experiences across five continents of the world, featuring ordinary people facing and adapting to the consequences of climate change in its different forms. Through gripping accounts of a nomad having to relocate from the desert to the nearest city, an indigenous person fighting back for land rights, and a winemaker finding creative solutions to increasing heatwaves, among other stories, the book humanises the challenges of climate change. By weaving scientific data with personal stories, the chapters deliver a compelling call to move beyond mere acknowledgment of the problem towards transformative action that respects the balance of ecosystems, fosters sustainable practices, and redefines our relationship with nature. Overall, the book highlights the urgent need for global awareness on what ultimately represents one of the most pressing challenges of our time, leaving readers inspired and empowered to create a more sustainable and resilient future. This accessible and impactful book will be of great interest to students and scholars of climate change and environmental sciences and communication, as well as community leaders and NGOs wanting to understand practical examples and insights of climate change phenomena. Views and opinions expressed are those of the authors only and do not necessarily reflect those of the European Union or the European Commission.
Strategic Digital Transformation: A Results-Driven Approach (Business and Digital Transformation)
by Alex FentonEmerging technologies are having a profound impact upon individuals and organisations. The “always on” attitude that digital technologies encourage brings an equal mix of benefits and challenges. The ready availability of digital technology has transformed the way we live, learn, play and interact – but how a business can turn the tools into an economic and organisational advantage is not always clear. This new edition of Strategic Digital Transformation enables students and business leaders to take a strategic and sustainable approach to realising the value of digital technologies. It offers results-driven solutions that successfully transform organisations into data-driven, people-focused businesses capable of sustainably competing at a global level. These solutions are significantly shaped by the need for organisational digital maturity, high levels of digital and cultural interoperability and the purposeful application of AI. With four key areas of focus, the material moves through understanding digital business to planning, implementing and assessing digital transformation. The current challenges facing all small organisations, including limited resources, financial pressures and the lack of dedicated IT departments, are explored. The authors consider the ways in which innovation can increase competitive advantage, how innovative business models can create new opportunities and how a data-driven perspective can release embedded value within the organisation. Contemporary international case studies and examples throughout each chapter bridge theory with practical application and systematically document the patterns of activities that enable success. All chapters have been completely revised and updated to reflect advances in technology and to highlight the social and economic consequences of digital transformation. This textbook is a vital resource for postgraduate and undergraduate students of digital business, innovation and transformation. By showing how to initiate digital transformation across an organisation, it will prepare business owners, directors and management of small- and medium-sized businesses to take strategic advantage of new and emerging technologies to stay ahead of their competition.
Structured Representation Learning: From Homomorphisms and Disentanglement to Equivariance and Topography (Synthesis Lectures on Computer Vision)
by Nicu Sebe Max Welling Yue Song Thomas Anderson KellerThis book introduces approaches to generalize the benefits of equivariant deep learning to a broader set of learned structures through learned homomorphisms. In the field of machine learning, the idea of incorporating knowledge of data symmetries into artificial neural networks is known as equivariant deep learning and has led to the development of cutting edge architectures for image and physical data processing. The power of these models originates from data-specific structures ingrained in them through careful engineering. To-date however, the ability for practitioners to build such a structure into models is limited to situations where the data must exactly obey specific mathematical symmetries. The authors discuss naturally inspired inductive biases, specifically those which may provide types of efficiency and generalization benefits through what are known as homomorphic representations, a new general type of structured representation inspired from techniques in physics and neuroscience. A review of some of the first attempts at building models with learned homomorphic representations are introduced. The authors demonstrate that these inductive biases improve the ability of models to represent natural transformations and ultimately pave the way to the future of efficient and effective artificial neural networks.
