Geographic Information and Cartography for Risk and Crisis Management
by Temenoujka L. Bandrova Milan Konecny Sisi ZlatanovaCartography and geographic information (GI) are remarkably appropriate for the requirements of early warning (EW) and crisis management (CM). The use of geospatial technology has increased tremendously in the last years. ICT has changed from just using maps created in advance, to new approaches, allowing individuals (decision-makers) to use cartography interactively, on the basis of individual user's requirements. The new generation of cartographic visualizations based on standardisation, formal modelling, use of sensors, semantics and ontology, allows for the better adaptation of information to the needs of the users. In order to design a new framework in pre-disaster and disaster management safety/security/privacy aspects of institutions and citizens need to be considered. All this can only be achieved by demonstrating new research achievements, sharing best practices (e.g. in the health area) and working towards the wider acceptance of geospatial technology in society, with the help of education and media. This book will outline research frontiers and applications of cartography and GI in EW and CM and document their roles and potentials in wider processes going on in information/knowledge-based societies.

Pathogenic Yeasts
by Ruth Ashbee Elaine M. BignellMycological studies of yeasts are entering a new phase, with the sequencing of multiple fungal genomes informing our understanding of their ability to cause disease and interact with the host. At the same time, the ongoing use of traditional methods in many clinical mycology laboratories continues to provide information for the diagnosis and treatment of patients. This volume reviews various aspects of pathogenic yeasts and what is known about their molecular and cellular biology and virulence, in addition to looking at clinical and laboratory findings. As each chapter is written by a leading expert in the field, this book summarizes in one volume much of the latest research on several pathogenic yeasts, including Candida, Cryptococcus, Malassezia and yeasts of emerging importance. The importance of laboratory diagnosis, antifungal susceptibility testing, antifungal resistance and yeast diseases in animals are reviewed.

Under the Radar
by Richard Mcgee M GossThis is the biography of Ruby Payne-Scott (1912 to 1981). As the first female radio astronomer (and one of the first people in the world to consider radio astronomy), she made classic contributions to solar radio physics. She also played a major role in the design of the Australian government's Council for Scientific and Industrial Research radars, which were in turn of vital importance in the Southwest Pacific Theatre in World War II and were used by Australian, US and New Zealand personnel. From a sociological perspective, her career also offers many examples of the perils of being a female academic in the first half of the 20th century. Written in an engaging style and complemented by many historical photographs this book gives a fascinating insight into the beginning of radio astronomy and the role of a pioneering woman in astronomy.
Towards a Theory of Thinking
by Albrecht Von Müller Britt Glatzeder Vinod GoelThinking is one of the most fascinating and characteristic abilities of human beings. To advance our understanding of this distinctive feature that makes us human is not only an exciting scientific challenge but also of great relevance in terms of coping with more and more complex challenges of the world we live in and in terms of becoming the core value creation process in an increasingly knowledge-based economy. The present book is the second volume of the Parmenides book series "On Thinking" dedicated to explore current approaches and contributions towards a fuller understanding of human thought processes. It focuses on assembling building blocks for a conceptual framework that might - after several iterations - contribute to a future theory of thinking. It brings together an international group of leading scientists coming from the different fields upon which a theory of thinking must build: brain and cognitive sciences, experimental and developmental psychology, evolutionary anthropology and biology, linguistics, transcultural neuroimaging, modeling and philosophy.
Vibrations of mechanical systems with regular structure
by Mark Kempner Ludmilla BanakhVibrations in systems with a periodic structure is the subject of many ongoing research activities. This work presents the analysis of such systems with the help of the theory of representation groups by finite element methods, dynamic Compliance and dynamic rigidness methods, specially adjusted for the analysis of engineering structures. The approach presented in this book permits a simplification and facilitates the understanding of mechanical vibrations in various structures. The book includes extended studies of even complicated machinery structures with an emphasis on flight vehicle engines.
Voting Paradoxes and Group Coherence
by Dominique Lepelley William V. GehrleinThe likelihood of observing Condorcet's Paradox is known to be very low for elections with a small number of candidates if voters' preferences on candidates reflect any significant degree of a number of different measures of mutual coherence. This reinforces the intuitive notion that strange election outcomes should become less likely as voters' preferences become more mutually coherent. Similar analysis is used here to indicate that this notion is valid for most, but not all, other voting paradoxes. This study also focuses on the Condorcet Criterion, which states that the pairwise majority rule winner should be chosen as the election winner, if one exists. Representations for the Condorcet Efficiency of the most common voting rules are obtained here as a function of various measures of the degree of mutual coherence of voters' preferences. An analysis of the Condorcet Efficiency representations that are obtained yields strong support for using Borda Rule.
miRNA Regulation of the Translational Machinery
by Robert E. RhoadsThe silencing of gene expression by small interfering RNAs has been recognized for only a relatively short time, but this has transformed our understanding of both transcriptional and post-transcriptional gene regulatory mechanisms. Multiple pathways culminate in formation of an RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC) containing a member of the Argonaute protein family bound to a 22-nt RNA strand that interacts with a target mRNA or gene through Watson-Crick base pairing. One consequence is mRNA-specific inhibition of protein synthesis. Evidence has been presented for diverse mechanisms, but there is not universal agreement in the field of how RISCs affect the translational machinery. The chapters collected in this volume represent contribution by leaders in the search to understand how miRNAs affect translation. They include chapters representing work in plants and Caenorhabditis elegans, the biological systems that originally led to the discovery of small interfering RNAs, but also include chapters on mammalian systems, with special emphasis on regulation of a key tumor suppressor and a protein that restricts human immunodeficiency virus 1 (HIV-1).

Death Receptors and Cognate Ligands in Cancer
by Holger KalthoffDeath receptors play a central role in directing apoptosis in mammalian cells. This process of active cell death is important for a number of biological processes, e.g. for the regulation of the immune system. Death receptors are cell surface receptors that transmit apoptotic signals initiated by corresponding death ligands. Many complex signaling pathways are activated and apoptosis is the final result of a complex biochemical cascade of events. Besides their role in the induction of cell death, evidence now exists that death receptors are able to activate several non-apoptotic signaling pathways which, depending on cellular context, may lead to apoptosis resistance, secretion of pro-inflammatory proteins, proliferation and invasive growth of cancer cells. This book looks at the molecular basis of death receptor signaling and the role of death receptors in cancer development.
Flexible Intramedullary Nailing in Children
by Pierre LascombesOver the past three decades, the flexible intramedullary nailing (FIN) technique that originated in the University of Nancy in France has evolved to the point where it is becoming the gold standard for the treatment of many fractures in children. This comprehensive textbook on FIN is written by Pierre Lascombes and his colleagues from the University of Nancy and covers all its potential applications. The book is divided into three parts. The first part focuses on general considerations such as biomechanics, choice of implant, basic principles of surgical technique, and rehabilitation. The second part describes in detail the techniques developed for each particular fracture type with the aid of numerous high-quality illustrations. In the final part, a range of further indications for FIN in children are discussed. By clearly explaining the basic principles and various uses of FIN, this book will prove of value to both novice and experienced traumatologists and orthopedic surgeons.
Free-Radical Retrograde-Precipitation Polymerization (FRRPP)
by Gerard CanebaThe book pertains to unique phenomenological features of a potentially runaway polymerization reaction process that is apparently brought under control through a mass and energy confining mechanism. It integrates the combination of various concepts in order to explain a collection of experimental observations, which includes entrapment of reactive intermediates as well as their energy contents, nucleated thermal hot spots beyond adiabatic rise temperatures, and nanoscale confinement behavior that has been used for fine patterning of polymers. Toward the end, the author of the book will try to use whatever understanding that has been formulated about the Free-Radical Retrograde-Precipitation Polymerization (FRRPP) process to relate it to various materials including environmentally-reponsible and energy-relevant types, and inherent control of energetic systems.
Cell Biology of the Axon (Results and Problems in Cell Differentiation #48)
by Edward KoenigRecent years have witnessed striking advances in research on axons at a cellular level that substantially impact our current understanding of axonal biology. Newer findings and their ramifications are critically reviewed in the 16 chapters of this volume by authors highly qualified by virtue of their scientific contributions to research areas they know and write about. Five basic areas (I to V) germane to axonal biology are highlighted, beginning with (I) signaling interactions mediating myelination, and differentiation of axonal membrane domains; (IIa) issues surrounding organization and transport dynamics of neurofilaments in axons, (IIb) mechanisms regulating microtubule organization and dynamics, misregulation of which causes axonal degeneration, and (IIc) the roles actin binding proteins play in regulating organization and functions of the actin filament system in mature and growing axons; (IIIa) myosin motor proteins and cargoes intrinsic to the axon compartment, (IIIb) mitochondrial transport motors, and imperatives governing transport dynamics and directional delivery, (IIIc) mechanisms mediating retrograde signaling associated with NGF's role in trophic-dependent neuronal survival, and (IIId) potential for impaired subcellular targeting of a -synuclein as a mechanism for accumulation of Lewy body inclusions in synucleinopathies; (IVa) occurrence and organization of discrete ribosome-containing domains in axons, (IVb) endogenous mRNAs, classes of proteins translated locally, and RNP trafficking in axons, (IVc) importance of locally synthesized nuclear encoded mitochondrial proteins for maintenance, function and survival of axons, (IVd) occurrence of RNA trafficking from glial cells to axons, and significance glial RNA transcripts may play in expression in axons and axon terminals, (IVe) RNA trafficking and localization of RNA transcripts in axonal growth cones, and signaling pathways that modulate local protein synthesis for directional elongation, and (IVf) genetic and molecular defects underlying spinal muscular atrophy, and roles that SMN gene product plays as a molecular chaperone in mRNA transport and translation; (Va) injury-induced local synthesis of a protein forming a retrograde signaling complex in axons to stimulate regeneration, and (Vb) endogenous and exogenous factors that condition axonal regenerative capacity in PNS and CNS, including injury-induced activation of specific genes governing regeneration. Emergent complexities revealed in this volume compel a major revision in the traditional conceptual model of the axon's intrinsic makeup and capacities.
Biomechanics of Lower Limb Prosthetics
by Mark R. PitkinThe most outstanding feature of "Biomechanics of Lower Limb Prosthetics" is the demonstration of the practicality of biomechanics, when applied to lower limb prosthetics. Several original concepts are described, one of which, "rolling technology," has been implemented in prosthetic devices, while the principle of "reciprocal anti-resonance in locomotion" addresses future studies. A concept of anthropomorphicity presented by the author is a key tool in planning the design of an artificial limb or its components. Measurement procedures and equipment used in biomechanical laboratories are presented. The book demonstrates how the analysis of biomechanical data is a tool in the decision-making process of a prosthetic designer and clinician. The author shares his experience in the development of a protocol for biomechanics subject trials used in NIH-supported studies.
Etiology and Pathogenesis of Periodontal Disease
by Alexandrina L Dumitrescu'Etiology and Pathogenesis of Periodontal Disease' represents a new concept in periodontology with its pronounced focus on understanding through knowledge rather than presenting the present valid answers. Connections between the diseases in the periodontium and general health are described in detail. Even if periodontal disease is certainly not a generally accepted cause of death, periodontal treatment may obviously save lives.
