The Greatest American: Benjamin Franklin, The World's Most Versatile Genius

by Mark Skousen

&“I have sometimes almost wished it had been my destiny to have been born two or three centuries hence.&” -- Ben FranklinWas Benjamin Franklin an indispensable public servant or a cunning chameleon? A hard-headed entrepreneur or an opportunistic privateer? A devoted family man or a notorious womanizer? A scientist and inventor or a hoaxer and self promoter? A believer or a heretic? The first civilized American or the most dangerous man in America? Read this book, and you decide! In The Greatest American, Dr. Mark Skousen—&“America&’s Economist&” and a direct descendant of the old man—reveals many new features and little-known facts about Ben Franklin, such as: - Why Franklin was a free trader: "No nation was ever ruined by trade." - The surprising benefits of inflation to pay for the American Revolution. - How the War of Independence transformed him from a religious heretic to a believing theist. - Why he hated party politics. - How he changed his mind about slavery and became a devote abolitionist. - The truth about his love affairs with women. Did he really abandon his wife Deborah, or did she abandon him? - Why he never applied for any patents for his famous inventions. - Why George Washington loved Franklin and John Adams despised him. - Why he turned against his beloved son, William, and never forgave him. - His preference for private welfare and charities rather than state-run social programs and welfare. Benjamin Franklin was the oldest of the founding fathers -- he was indeed a whole generation ahead of George Washington, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson -- and yet he was the most forward-looking of the group and the most modern of the founders. The Greatest American shows just how much of an impact Benjamin Franklin had on American politics and daily life. &“Few scholars today know Benjamin Franklin as well, or as intimately, as Mark Skousen. That familiarity is on full display in The Greatest American. Skousen, a direct descendant of his subject, ranges nimbly across the remarkable breadth of Franklin&’s life, from his views on business and economics to education and, yes, sex. Along the way, he makes a com- pelling case not only for Franklin&’s greatness but also for his relevance today. He is the most modern of founders—and the most fun.&” —Eric Weiner, author, Ben and Me, and former foreign correspondent for NPR &“Mark Skousen lucidly, delightfully and successfully lays out the life of one the most extraordinary figures in American— and indeed world—history. Franklin personified and promoted the characteristics and culture that made America great, especially the drive for self-improvement and inventiveness. His genius for diplomacy was absolutely essential for the success of the American Revolution. The significance of his astonishing scientific achievements, insights, and research are only now being fully appreciated. One can only exclaim: What a man!&” —Steve Forbes, chairman and editor in chief, Forbes magazine &“If anyone embodies the Renaissance man, it&’s Ben Franklin— printer, scientist, musician, inventor, author, activist, statesman, and diplomat. Mark Skousen delves into every facet of his remarkable life, including Franklin&’s surprisingly active love life into his eighties, in this lively and entertaining book. Highly recommended!&” —Alexander Green, chief investment strategist, The Oxford Club, and author of Beyond Wealth

Then, in a stroke of genius only Jason Reynolds can conceive, Sunny discovers a track event that encompasses the hard beats of hip-hop, the precision of ballet, and the showmanship of dance as a whole: the discus throw. The Five Archetypes: Discover Your True Nature and Transform Your Life and Relationships

by Carey Davidson

Discover the personality archetypes within you and improve your life and relationships with a new self-guided system of personal transformation. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) philosophy, the elements Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water are the foundation of how nature grows and evolves. They are believed to help us understand everything from illness and healing to the fundamental processes of child development—and they continue to inform Chinese medicine practice today. But as Ayurvedic nutritionist, reiki master, and Tournesol founder Carey Davidson demonstrates in this book, each of the five elements can also be seen as a personality archetype—and inside all of us is a unique blend of these archetypes that serves as a window into living a more fulfilling life on every level. In The Five Archetypes, Davidson explains that by knowing the personality traits associated with each type and using what she calls the Five Archetypes method, you can actually start to predict your behavioral patterns—not only with yourself but also with your friends, your romantic partner, your children, and even your colleagues. By practicing this method, you will also: -Learn how to exercise more control over behaviors that thwart your potential -Hone your self-awareness and self-regulation skills in the face of day-to-day stress -And understand what really makes people tick, so that you spend less time in stagnant relationships and more time in gratifying ones Through her study of the elements and the observations she&’s made in her work with individuals, couples, companies, parents, kids, and educators, Davidson has created a simplified and practical guide to harnessing the strengths of our five archetypes. Complete with an assessment designed to help you discover your primary, secondary, and lowest types, The Five Archetypes will not only teach you more about yourself and others but also transform your relationships and set you on the path to personal and interpersonal harmony.

"A steamy romcom about...female rage? You heard me! This is a super smart take on the genre that even non romance girlies will enjoy." —Red MagazineHeat rises and sparks fly when a surf-town author and an intimacy coordinator are thrown together to write new, steamy sex scenes for a TV series based on her hit novel in this deliciously fun debut romance.Tash was thrilled when the dramatic rights to her surprise-hit feminist novel were snapped up by an indie film studio. But no one warned her that a Hollywood shuffle could land her smart, literary epic in the hands of a huge action-movie franchise director more famous for his machismo than his artistry. And now this big shot director wants “the dirty version” of her book, demanding Tash transform the strong, complex female warriors she created into eye candy. But the longer they collaborate on her characters, the more she's attracted to his firm grasp of emotional (and fine, physical) nudity. Soon they're burning up the bedsheets along with their new pages, blurring romantic storylines. But just when Tash feels it’s all coming together, the whole plot falls apart. Can she find a narrative that saves her show and her own love story, or are both lost forever?

Rethinking Higher Education in Post-Apartheid South Africa: Transformative Trajectories within a Decolonial Paradigm (Routledge Contemporary South Africa)

by Edited by Emnet Tadesse Woldegiorgis, Logan Govender, and Dennis Zami Atibuni

This book explores the opportunities and epistemological and structural challenges facing higher education in postcolonial South Africa and argues for a fundamental transformation to meet the needs of the 21st century.Taking the concept of transformation as a unifying thread, this book discusses the evolving trajectories of higher education in South Africa, with particular emphasis on the decolonial initiatives that have emerged in the post-Apartheid era. During this time, there have been persistent calls for South Africa to move beyond Eurocentric education programmes and curricula in favour of a system that reflects the continent’s culture and identities of all South Africans. The book argues that incremental reforms of existing structures are insufficient and that instead a deeper, more fundamental shift in higher education structures, values, and systems is needed. Overall, the book calls for a comprehensive transformation to expand access for historically disadvantaged communities, enhance quality and competitiveness, address past injustices, and improve the quality and capacity to act together for a more sustainable and just future. Also exploring the digital transformations which have accelerated in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, this book will be an essential read for researchers and policymakers working on higher education in South Africa.

Socioecological Transformations: Linking Ontologies with Structures, Personal with Collective Change (Rethinking Globalizations)

by Sabaheta Ramcilovic-Suominen

Socioecological Transformations confronts dominant framings of transformation that either remain apolitical and ahistorical, or overemphasizes the structural causes, while bypassing the ontological roots of the present-day socioecological violence and destruction. It challenges the technocratic and structuralist tendencies that either reduce transformation to policy tweaks, or to social movements and activism. This volume reclaims socioecological transformations as a radical, justice-centred theory-praxis. By connecting the structural and the ontological roots of the colonial-racial-capitalist system of oppression, the book exposes how materialist-dualist ontology and associated worldviews uphold hierarchies of worth, which in turn serve and uphold the colonial-racial-capitalist system of oppression. In doing so, it widens the spectrum of viable responses to include in addition to social movements and activism, those that unsettle the ontological bases of our socioecological calamities—the human exceptionalism and the illusion of separation. The fifteen chapters span diverse geographies, struggles, and approaches, weaving together onto-epistemic inquiry with grounded transformative practices, movements and action. The contributions share the common focus on justice as both motivation and a guiding principle for transformations. The book calls for transformation where being, knowing, and doing are reimagined in relational, life-affirming terms. A vital resource for students, academics, activists inspired by political ecology, feminist studies, decolonial and relational approaches, social movements, and transformations, but also practitioners and policy actors seeking to engage transformation beyond surface-level solutions. Socioecological Transformations invites readers to embrace complexity, plurality, along the paradoxes that transformations entail, while building solidarities across polarized strategies, ontologies and worldviews. The Swiss National Bank: An Unconventional History (Routledge Explorations in Economic History)

by Mikael Huber

Echoing new trends in central banking history, this book traces the story of the Swiss National Bank from the end of World War II, going beyond monetary policy and inflation to explore the full scope of the bank’s activities.Drawing on extensive archival research, it examines the broader landscape in which the central bank operated, including the role of Swiss banks, government oversight via the Federal Council, the influence of the international monetary system, and the negotiation of central bank independence — particularly the use of non-legal instruments and their limitations within Switzerland’s decentralised political system. Throughout, the Swiss National Bank had to reconcile three sometimes conflicting factors: corporate liberalism, which allowed major economic players a say in policy; the imperative of maintaining the stability of the Swiss franc; and the need to kerb potential threats to monetary stability. In response, the SNB developed a sophisticated arsenal of non-legal and unconventional tools to regulate the financial system on a temporary basis. The history of these exceptional measures sheds light on the unconventional evolution of the Swiss National Bank. This book will appeal to readers of economic history, financial history, central banking, and Swiss history.

By addressing the unique dual nature of photography, where mechanical processes intersect with creative choices, it offers a fresh perspective on a longstanding legal challenge.Through a critical examination of select case law with a focus on Anglo-American law, the book highlights the complexities and inconsistencies in the current copyright protection for photographs due to their dual nature, which exhibits both mechanical and creative characteristics. It argues for moving beyond the conventional one-size-fits-all approach for copyright concepts in favour of adopting a tailored, contextual approach that acknowledges the nature and characteristics of the category of work in question. The book also alludes to emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and machine learning models, considering their implications for copyright and creative expression. It also discusses how the history of copyright protection of photographic works may illuminate the path towards dealing with conflicts between copyright and perceived mechanical mediums of creative expression. This book will be of interest to researchers in copyright law and intellectual property law, especially those engaged with the legal treatment of mechanically produced creative works. It offers valuable insights into the evolving relationship between law, technology, and authorship in the digital age.

A Field Manual of Magnetotelluric (MT) Surveys with Case Studies for Earth Scientists and Engineers

by O. P. Mishra D. C. Naskar

This book details both conventional and advanced geophysical techniques with description of the Electromagnetic (EM) based physics involved in different methodologies of magnetotellurics (MT). It offers detailed discussions of the theory of EM and MT methods, and the operation of specific instruments, including the presentation of results and their interpretation in tabular format. The chapters describe the conceptual background of MT geophysical methods along with the related instrumentation, sufficient illustrations, and the applicability of the individual methodologies supported by successful case histories.Features: Provides a comprehensive introduction to the MT–geophysical method. Covers diverse geotectonic settings with several case studies, supported by diagrams and data tables. Describes the fundamentals of uncontrollable telluric and controllable non-telluric sources used in MT surveys. Reviews MT methods with emphasis on recent improvements, recognizing both static and distortion effects and their treatment in the analysis of impedance tensors in 3-D inversion codes. Explores integrated MT interpretation coupled with seismic and potential (gravity, magnetic) geophysical methods. This book is aimed at professionals, students, and researchers in geophysics, geology, civil, mechanical, petroleum, and geothermal engineering, and other branches of earth and environmental sciences.
