Secrets of San Blas
by Charles FarleyMost towns have their secrets. In the 1930s, Port St. Joe has more than its share. Old Doc Berber, Port St. Joe's only general practitioner, thought he knew all the secrets of the sleepy town in Florida's panhandle. But a grisly murder out at the Cape San Blas Lighthouse drags him into a series of intrigues that even he can't diagnose. Fortunately, the wise old doctor has an even wiser housekeeper, the industrious Jewel Jackson, who has a magic touch in the kitchen and an old Southern saying for every situation—and has tabs on everything that's going on in town through the furtive black-folks' grapevine. But the old doctor loses his good sense when he meets young Sally Martin, the dead man's widow. In spite of himself, Doc Berber is drawn into a dangerous search for the killer that leads him into a sinister tangle of deceit, corruption, and scandalous secrets. He's forced into an agonizing struggle, not just with the murderer, but with his own conscience as well.Next in series > >See all of the books in this series

Cold Case: Investigating History's Mysteries
by W.C. JamesonFrom the late 1870s to mid-1880s, Tombstone, Arizona, enjoyed impressive growth and prosperity as a result of the discovery of major silver deposits nearby. As in many boomtowns in the American West, its sudden prosperity attracted businessmen, outlaws, grifters, gamblers, prostitutes, and preachers. It wasn&’t long before there was a desperate need for lawmen and law enforcement. Outlaws like Johnny Ringo, Curly Bill Brocius, Buckskin Frank Leslie, Burt Alvord, and a handful of other lesser known criminals, all faced off with the legendary lawmen, including the Earp brothers—Wyatt, Virgil, Morgan, and Warren—who to one degree or another represented law enforcement in this wild, no-holds-barred town. In addition to Tombstone&’s reputation as a setting for colorful outlaw-lawman confrontations, it is also associated with a number of compelling and baffling mysteries. Ghosts are reported to roam the old taverns, hotels, opera houses, and other buildings. Eerie and unexplainable sounds and sights have been associated with Boot Hill, the famous cemetery, as well as the New City Cemetery.Cold Case: The Tombstone Mysteries investigates the real stories behind the mysteries, including unsolved crimes that await a solution. These old west cold cases continue to attract researchers and investigators to the town too tough to die.

Foundations of Multiple Regression and Analysis of Variance
by Lynn Roy LaMotteThis book provides a rigorous development of the foundations of linear models for multiple regression and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), based on orthogonal projections and relations among linear subspaces. It is appropriate for the linear models course required in most statistics Ph.D. programs. The presentation is particularly accessible because it is self-contained, general, and taken in logical steps that are linked directly to practicable computations. The broad objective is to provide a path of mastery so that the reader could, if stranded on a desert isle with nothing but pencil, paper, and a computer to perform matrix sums and products, replicate general linear models procedures in extant statistical computing packages. The primary prerequisite is mathematical maturity, which includes logical thinking and the ability to tell when a proof is a proof. Casual acquaintance with matrices would be helpful but not required. Background in basic statis- tical theory and methods is assumed, mainly for familiarity with terminology and the purposes of statistics in applications. The material is developed as a series of propositions, each dependent only on those preceding it. The reader is strongly encouraged to prove each one independently. Mastery requires active involvement. As part of the broad coverage of the mathematics supporting multiple regression and ANOVA, those propositions also establish several new, key results. There is a unique, best numerator sum of squares for testing an estimable function The extra residual sum of squares due to imposing a linear hypothesis tests exclusively the estimable part Models that include exclusively any given set of ANOVA effects can be formulated with contrast coding Tests of any ANOVA effects in any design and model, including unbalanced and empty cells, can be had with extra residual sum of squares due to deleting predictor variables Essential properties of Type III methods are identified and proven
Video-Analysis and Knowledge on Rewind: Contributions to Social Theory and the Sociology of Knowledge (Knowledge, Communication and Society)
by Ajit Singh René Tuma Verl, Christian Meier zuThis volume applies interpretive video‑analysis to explore the intersections between the sociology of knowledge and interaction studies. Presenting a series of studies that draw on video‑analytic and videographic approaches to research, it examines the way video data can shed light on connections between social phenomena at the micro‑, meso‑, and macro‑levels, and the access that it grants to the temporality of social reality. With empirical research in fields such as care, consumption, gaming, military, music, science, and violence, the studies in this volume show how the video‑analytic approach provides an empirical basis for progress in social theory and aids the development of the concept of knowledge. As such, it will appeal to scholars of sociology with interests in social theory, the sociology of knowledge, and visual methods in social research.

Others involve mysterious tales and legends of lost mines and buried treasures that have not been recovered—yet.
Aristotle on Natural Simultaneity of Relatives in the Categories (Routledge Focus on Philosophy)
by António Pedro MesquitaThis book addresses the issue of natural simultaneity of relatives, discussed by Aristotle in Categories 7, 7b15– 8a12. Natural simultaneity is a form of symmetrical ontological dependence that holds between items that are not causally linked. In this section of the Categories, Aristotle introduces this topic in his analysis of relatives and maintains that although relatives seem to be for the most part simultaneous by nature, there seem to be some exceptions. He mentions two pairs of relatives as exceptions, namely the pairs knowledge/knowable and perception/perceptible, and argues at length for the priority of the second relative over the first one in each case. Through a close reading of this text, the author analyses Aristotle’s arguments for the thesis of the exceptional character of these pairs and shows that all of them are unsuccessful in supporting the thesis. In order to draw this conclusion, the author highlights and carefully considers the properties that Aristotle is committed to attributing to relatives, taking into account the metaphysical framework of the Categories as well as their specificities within the set of nonsubstantial categories. Then, he shows that Aristotle’s mature views on relatives in the Metaphysics can be construed as committing him to the rejection of such a thesis.Although the issue of natural simultaneity is just one of several that Aristotle considers in his discussion of relatives throughout Categories 7, it is a particularly relevant issue, since it involves a number of puzzles whose analysis allows for a better understanding of the very notion of relativity in Aristotle. This is the first book to explore this issue from the perspective of illuminating the Aristotelian views on relatives.Aristotle on Natural Simultaneity of Relatives in the Categories will appeal to scholars and graduate students working on Aristotle, ancient philosophy in general, and metaphysics.

Data Driven Methods for Civil Structural Health Monitoring and Resilience: Latest Developments and Applications (Resilience and Sustainability in Civil, Mechanical, Aerospace and Manufacturing Engineering Systems)
by Carlo Rainieri Mohammad Noori Vasilis Sarhosis Marco Domaneschi Wael Abdelmonem AltabeyData Driven Methods for Civil Structural Health Monitoring and Resilience: Latest Developments and Applications provides a comprehensive overview of data-driven methods for structural health monitoring (SHM) and resilience of civil engineering structures, mostly based on artificial intelligence or other advanced data science techniques. This allows existing structures to be turned into smart structures, thereby allowing them to provide intelligible information about their state of health and performance on a continuous, relatively real-time basis. Artificial-intelligence-based methodologies are becoming increasingly more attractive for civil engineering and SHM applications; machine learning and deep learning methods can be applied and further developed to transform the available data into valuable information for engineers and decision makers.
