The Life of Ludwig Mond (Routledge Revivals)

by J. M. Cohen

First published in 1956, The Life of Ludwig Mond is one of the earliest biographies to present the story of Dr. Mond. The book, as a biography, is mainly and rightly concerned with the man himself, but it could hardly avoid dealing with the growth of those parts of the heavy chemical industry with which Ludwig Mond was associated. Quite apart from the clearly drawn portrait it provides, the book adds a most useful and interesting chapter to the history of one of the main branches of the early chemical industry. It throws light on the progressive changes that have taken place in chemical knowledge, in methods of manufacture, in the size of firms, and in industrial relations, in which Ludwig Mond was a pioneer. This important historical work is valuable to those interested in the life of Ludwig Mond as well as the development of industrial philosophy.

The Lotus and the Spinning Wheel (Routledge Revivals)

by Marie Beuzeville Byles

First published in 1963, The Lotus and the Spinning Wheel tells the story of India’s two great sons, the Buddha and the Mahatma. Both were the teachers their age and country needed, and this book goes beyond the merits of their teaching. The reader is invited to come with the author firstly through the land the Buddha trod. Through the present-day landscape, the book tries to bring to life again the people who lived in these places 2500 years ago and listen to the Buddha teaching the way to deliverance from suffering.Through the lesser-known stories of his ministerial life the book seeks to discover the Buddha his disciples knew, not the Buddha of legend nor of learned abstract discourses, but the human being who lived and taught. Then on the long train journey from northern India to Wardha, near Gandhi's ashram the book reviews the main events of Gandhi's life, connecting them where possible with the teaching of the Buddha. This fascinating work will be of interest to students of Asian studies, Buddhism, Gandhi studies and Indian philosophy.

Christian Science Today: Power, Policy, Practice (Routledge Revivals)

by Charles S. Braden

First published in 1958, in Christian Science Today the author's aim is to see what has happened in Christian Science since Mrs. Eddy’s time. Since the founder of Christian Science passed away, much has been written about Mary Baker Eddy and her movement; but not a single full-length study has appeared on the basis of entirely objective scholarship. It is the purpose of this book to remedy that lack. The book raises fundamental questions like- has the essential nature of her teaching been modified? Are there any trends in Christian Science thought today that are new, and if so, how has the Church regarded them? Have there been sectarian offshoots? What has become of them? How is the Church dealing currently with those who hold views supposedly at variance with the official views? The author is deeply respectful of the values in the faith founded by Mrs. Eddy, and he states fully and fairly the facts he has learned about Christian Science, the Church, and those who direct it. In his thorough documentation he relies on both official and unofficial sources, including a vast amount of unpublished material. This is an important historical reference work for scholars of Christianity and religion.Due to modern production methods, it has not been possible to include two fold-out image plates within the book. Any purchasers of the book will be able to receive a free pdf of the relevant pages by contacting Routledge Customer Services https://www.routledge.com/contacts/customer-service

Poets' Grammar: Person, Time and Mood in Poetry (Routledge Revivals)

by Francis Berry dec'd

First published in 1958, Poets’ Grammar treats of a few grammatical forms and inflexions as they function in the work of some English poets and dramatists. For this purpose, the author is less concerned with the primary meaning of the word Grammar, as given by Shorter Oxford Dictionary, namely “that department of the study of language which deals with its inflexional forms or their equivalents with the rules for employing these correctly”, than with that subordinate meaning of the word, as defined by the same dictionary, namely “an individual's manner of using grammatical forms.”The book discusses important themes like tense in medieval pageant and poem; pronoun and verb in Shakespeare; Elizabethan and Jacobean ‘personal’ insights; Shelley and the future tense; and preposition in poetry and translation. This is an interesting read for scholars and students of English literature and English poetry.

The Crown, the Sages and Supreme Morality (Routledge Revivals)

by Robert E. Ball

First published in 1983, in The Crown, the Sages and Supreme Morality the first account of the universal science of Supreme Morality, or Moralogy, to be published in the West, Robert Ball shows how it is based on the moral teaching of Christ, Buddha, Confucius and Socrates, and is influenced by ancient Chinese thought. He shows that morality stresses the lines of authority- national, spiritual and family-that are inherent in all relationships. As a former Master of the Supreme Court closely involved in the organization and supervision of legal process, Mr Ball is much concerned to reinforce the position of the British Crown on a theoretical basis, and he therefore examines in detail monarchy and its possible future role in a changing world. The discussion also extends to other matters, such as commerce, politics and religion in an evolutionary context. The author concludes by identifying morality as the key to Britain’s self-restoration and the necessary thread in human evolution. This is an interesting work for students and scholars of philosophy, religion, philosophy of religion, and social anthropology.

Brain-Body Parenting: How to Stop Managing Behaviour and Start Raising Joyful, Resilient Kids

by Mona Delahooke

'I will be recommending this book to every parent' Dr Laura Markham'I adore this book!' Dr Tina Payne BrysonOver her decades as a clinical psychologist, Dr Mona Delahooke has helped countless distraught parents who struggle to manage their children's challenging behaviours. These families are understandably focused on correcting or improving a child's lack of compliance, emotional outbursts, tantrums and other 'out of control' behaviour. But behaviour, no matter how challenging, is not the problem but a symptom; a clue about what is happening in a child's unique physiological makeup. In Brain-Body Parenting, Dr Delahooke offers a radical new approach to parenting based on an approach that considers the essential role of the entire nervous system, which produces children's feelings and behaviours. When we begin to understand the biology beneath the behaviour, suggests Dr Delahooke, we give our children the resources they need to grow and thrive, and we give ourselves the gift of a happier, more connected relationship with them. Brain-Body Parenting empowers parents with tools to help their children develop self-regulation skills, while also encouraging parental self-care. The result is a deeper understanding of your child, encouraging calmer behaviour, more harmonious family dynamics, and increased resilience.

It's also a book about defying the bullsh*t expectation that midlife women at best maintain (looks, career, relationships), at worst decline. With ambitious thinking and personal development takeouts from her time as a coach, Cally debunks many of the myths surrounding the female of the species and gives a fresh, funny and life-affirming look at what it means to be a middle-aged woman who is willing to take a chance, put herself out there and who is also willing to fail.

Birth, Death, and Domestic Religion in Early Modern London (Cambridge Studies in Early Modern British History)

by Emily Vine

Early modern London has long been recognised as a centre of religious diversity, yet the role of the home as the setting of religious practice for all faiths has been largely overlooked. In contrast, this study offers the first examination of domestic religion in London during a period of intense religious change, between the Gunpowder Plot of 1605 and the Gordon Riots of 1780. Emily Vine considers both Christian and Jewish practices, comparing the experiences of Catholics, Sephardi and Ashkenazi Jews, Huguenots, and confirming and nonconfirming Protestants alike. Through its focus on the crowded metropolis as a place where households of different faiths coexisted, this study explores how religious communities operated beyond and in parallel to places of public worship. Vine demonstrates how families of different faiths experienced childbirth and death, arguing that homes became 'permeable' settings of communal religion at critical moments of the life cycle. By focusing on practices beyond the synagogue, meeting house, or church, this book demonstrates the vitality of collective devotion and kinship throughout the long eighteenth century.

Attitudes toward Political Authoritarianism in Economically Advanced Democracies: The Role of Gender Values and Norms (Elements in Gender and Politics)

by Amy C. Alexander Gefjon Off

This Element focuses on how individuals' gender values and populations' gender norms influence their attitudes toward political authoritarianism in economically advanced democracies. First, it theorizes that individuals' higher support for gender equality and freedom of sexuality (GEFS) decreases their support of political authoritarianism. This operates directly through the development of a belief system that is incompatible with political authoritarianism as a system rooted in and sustained through conformity to hegemonic masculine dominance. Additionally, this operates indirectly by strengthening support for pluralism, strengthening support for democratic socialization in households, and increasing rejection of the use of violence to control household social relations. Second, it theorizes how GEFS norms and political authoritarian norms are mutually reinforcing in shaping political culture at the country-level. The Element shows evidence consistent with these theories through analysis of data on OECD countries from 1995 to 2022 based on waves 3–7 of the World Values Surveys.
