Rethinking Socialist Space in the Twentieth Century (St Antony's Series)
by Paul Betts Marcus CollaThis edited collection explores the problem of space under socialist regimes in the twentieth century. Bringing together contributions from international scholars with expertise in the architectural, urban, social, and cultural history of twentieth-century socialism, the book includes examples from China, Africa, Mongolia, Eastern Europe and the USSR. The volume reflects on how developments in the field over the past two decades have altered our understanding of how such spaces were constructed (both literally and discursively), how they could become sites of contested meanings, and how they were perceived outside the socialist world. Moreover, the volume is concerned with how scholarly approaches associated with post-colonialism, global history, gender history, and the ‘temporal’ and ‘sensory’ turns have reconfigured our knowledge of, and approach to, the history of socialist space.

Readers will gain insights into recent sustainable progress and future applications of advanced biotechnological approaches to waste management. This book is highly recommended as reference literature for a diverse community of professionals, scientists, researchers, biotechnologists, environmentalists, industrialists, environmental biotechnologists, students (undergraduate and postgraduate), and innovators involved in developing strategies to address the challenges of current environmental issues.
Artificial Intelligence: Unveiling the Truth beyond the Myths (Copernicus Books)
by Alfio QuarteroniArtificial intelligence (AI) is transforming multiple aspects of human life, raising fundamental questions: Is AI truly intelligent? Can it surpass human capabilities? What are its risks and opportunities? In this book, I aim to clarify what AI really is, debunking myths while offering a rigorous, balanced perspective on its impact. Rather than chasing the latest AI trends, I will focus on the core principles that define it, tracing its evolution from early pioneers like Alan Turing to today&’s advanced systems. AI remains in the realm of narrow intelligence, excelling at specific tasks but far from replicating human cognition. Yet, its ability to process vast data, predict behaviors, and generate creative content is reshaping industries, from healthcare to finance. At the heart of AI&’s progress is machine learning, particularly neural networks, which rely more on data-driven training than traditional scientific theory. However, this innovation comes with challenges: environmental costs, job market disruptions, ethical dilemmas, and the black box problem—AI&’s decision-making opacity, which raises concerns about trust and accountability. AI also plays a growing role in global power dynamics, influencing governance, security, and even democracy. Nations leading AI development gain strategic advantages, but without careful regulation, AI could fuel inequality, surveillance, and manipulation. Despite the fears AI evokes, it is neither an existential threat nor a magical solution. My goal is not to celebrate or demonize it but to provide a critical framework for understanding this technological revolution. By fostering awareness, we can shape AI&’s integration into society in a way that aligns with human values and scientific progress.

Insights From Music Therapy Practice and Research: Other Knowing
by Jessica AtkinsonThis book, drawing on the author&’s 26 years as a music therapist, explores experience and evidence in music therapy. It asks which experiences count, why, and what is revealed of the cultures of music therapy when some experience is regarded as evidence and some is not. At the heart of music therapy lies a nonverbal phenomenon: shared musical encounter. Those involved can recognise it and respond without words, as &‘insiders&’. However, what this experience is, and how it relates to evidence, is not widely explored in music therapy practice and research. Furthermore, the investigations which do exist tend to be verbal, even when participants are nonverbal. As an alternative, this autoethnographic book honours the arts-based encounters fundamental to music therapy by offering the reader their own arts-based experience through poems, images, and more. Through them, the reader (or &‘Collaborator&’) is invited to consider the other knowing which comes from arts-based encounter, and its value. Using phenomenological and Aesthetic Critical Realist approaches, this work argues that relational, musical experience central to music therapy is valuable on its own terms as musically mediated, therapeutic evidence of personhood. This challenges the professional status quo which privileges verbal knowledge-creation and evidence measured by outsiders.
Medical Liability and Artificial Intelligence: Brazilian and European Legal Approaches
by Rafaella NogaroliThis book offers an in-depth examination of the critical intersection between medical practice and artificial intelligence, analysing the benefits, risks, and complex challenges that AI introduces into the doctor–patient relationship. It provides comprehensive insights into the reconceptualisation of medical duties, addressing both their ethical imperatives and their binding legal force. With a particular focus on medical malpractice and medico-legal duties, the book examines the ethical principles underpinning the use of artificial intelligence in medicine and their correlation with legal obligations. It further provides a general overview of the regulatory framework governing AI within the European Union, drawing comparisons with existing legal concepts under the Brazilian legal system. This is the first book worldwide to focus exclusively on the analysis of medical liability within the context of artificial intelligence. Originally published in Portuguese, it is now presented in an expanded and fully translated English edition. Aimed at both academic institutions and legal and healthcare practitioners, this research monograph addresses a notable gap in the existing literature. It serves as a valuable resource for scholars, legal professionals, and medical practitioners seeking a comprehensive understanding of the intersection between AI and medical malpractice. Through its in-depth legal analysis and practical case studies, the book offers a focused examination of medical malpractice and civil liability arising from the use of AI systems, enhancing its relevance to a wide-ranging audience. The book encompasses a broad range of topics relating to medical liability in the context of AI systems, adopting a practical approach that renders its content applicable across different legal jurisdictions. The foundational concepts of Medical Law and artificial intelligence it presents are relevant to multiple national frameworks, thereby enhancing its accessibility. This adaptability and universal applicability position the work as a valuable resource for international audiences, offering insights and guidance that may be effectively applied in diverse legal and healthcare contexts.
Minor Literature in Late Romanticism
by James NajarianThis book intervenes in the current discussion concerning so-called "minor" English literature of the late 1820s and early 1830s. Writing in the late Romantic period, this study charts the declining economic market for individual poetry volumes as other markets were developing. It examines selected authors over a short time period who consciously placed their works as minor, arguing that "minor" is not only a category that has been used to classify the literary reputation of authors long after their deaths, but a position that authors adopt themselves. Minor poets turn from long ambitious works to shorter lyrics on a limited number of subjects. They respond to the Romantic ideology and its emphasis on individual vision, achievement and reputation, but choose instead the minor. This book explores the work of Charles Lamb, as a theorist of the minor, as well as Thomas Hood, Felicia Hemans, Winthrop Mackworth Praed and Mary Mitford, as exemplars of this style. It links their work to literary Romanticism and yet responds to it in a strategically self-limited way, by posing as ancillary.
Utopia in the Factory: Prefigurative Knowledge Against Cybernetics
by John Preston Rhiannon FirthThis book is open access. The idea that automation, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Robotics might lead to a utopian future for humanity is a powerful one both in mainstream and radical discourse. The paradigm of &‘Industry 4.0&’ where digital manufacturing enables the seamless production of goods (and services) and &‘lights out&’ factories where machines and robots effortlessly produce for our future needs and wants are powerful drivers of a capitalist, free market cybertopia. For some radicals, technology and automation produce the conditions for a Fully Automated Luxury Communism, drawing on an interpretation of Marx, where human work would be replaced by a life of leisure and abundance for all. For others, an earlier discourse – cybernetics - and the use of AI and social media in communication and co-ordination enable forms of radical organization through &‘anarchist cybernetics&’. This book questions that technological optimism – particularly cybernetics, automation and AI – through a critique of these technologies and organizational forms. Cybernetics and corresponding technologies and forms (particularly Industry 4.0) can never capture human forms of creativity and working practices. Furthermore, there are similar problems with the &‘cybernetic paradigm&’ as a radical form of organization or social movement in terms of human autonomy, creativity, desire and social prefiguration. As counterpoint the book shows, through empirical evidence and drawing on interviews with workers or activists in a variety of organizational forms, that tacit knowledge and autonomous and spontaneous human projects (what the authors define as &‘hobbying&’) are critical in the physical act of making and co-operating.
Māyājāla – sūtra–a Unique Text of the Gilgit Dīrghāgama: A Critical Edition, Translation and Study
by Gleb SharyginThe Māyājāla-sūtra is a unique Buddhist sūtra which is contained in the newly discovered manuscript of the Sanskrit Buddhist canonical collection called the Dīrgha-āgama (The Long Collection). The discovery of this Sanskrit manuscript in the 1990s was a major development in early Buddhist studies (only Pāli and Chinese versions were previously available). In the first part of this work Gleb Sharygin presented a transliteration, reconstruction and translation of the Māyājāla-sūtra, No. 18 in the Dīrgha-āgama manuscript, as well as an overview of its content. The text of the sūtra is in a seriously deteriorated state, but a great deal of repetition helped to reconstruct it safely. It is the meaning of the text that presented difficulties. The second part of this work grew from his attempts to understand it. The main result that the study brought is that the text likely constitutes an intermediate link that unites the older ways of canonical writing and thinking with the newer types of Buddhist literature and structures of thought. In particular, the study revealed that the Māyājāla-sūtra likely was the source of the first chapters of the Saṃdhinirmocana-sūtra<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif; mso-ascii-theme
