Taylor's Version: The Poetic and Musical Genius of Taylor Swift

by Stephanie Burt

An original exploration and celebration of Taylor Swift, the world's biggest music star, as taught at the world's most prestigious university. One of the biggest stars in the world, Taylor Swift became so popular for many reasons - but first and last thanks to her songs. In Taylor's Version, award-winning literary critic Professor Stephanie Burt charts the extraordinary journey from Swift's teen country debut to her most recent record-breaking achievement as the highest-grossing touring artist in the world. Based on her Harvard University course, Taylor Swift and Her World, Burt offers the first serious study of Swift that pays close attention to her talent as a songwriter first and foremost. Drawing from musical and cultural criticism, poetry, economic theory, American history, as well as personal experience, Burt presents an insightful and heartfelt critical appreciation of Swift that delves into her life, her celebrity and her artistry. She explores how Swift's musical and public persona reflect her life and her craft, at once intimate and relatable. She considers the international community Swift's work has fostered, and she shows what makes Swift's body of work so important across styles, genres and generations. Tracing a path through the Eras, Taylor's Version is a literary deep-dive into Swift's particular form of genius, revealing the remarkable impact of her career and showing how her songs - how music itself - can change lives.

Civil Religion and the Renewal of American Politics (Cambridge Studies in Religion, Philosophy, and Society)

by Amy E. Black Douglas L. Koopman

American culture is evolving rapidly as a result of shifts in its religious landscape. American civil religion is robust enough to make room for new perspectives, as religious pluralism is foundational for democracy. Moreover, as Amy Black and Douglas L. Koopman argue, American religion and politics are indivisible. In this study, they interrogate three visions of American identity: Christian nationalism, strict secularism, and civil religion. Whereas the growth of Christian nationalism and strict secularism foster division and threaten consensus, by contrast, a dynamic, self-critical civil religion strengthens democracy. When civil religion makes room for robust religious pluralism to thrive, religious and nonreligious people can coexist peacefully in the public square. Integrating insights from political science, history, religious studies, and sociology, Black and Koopman trace the role of religion in American politics and culture, assess the current religious and political landscape, and offer insights into paths by which the United States might reach a new working consensus that strengthens democracy.

A History of the Bloomsbury Group

by Derek Ryan

A History of the Bloomsbury Group ranges more widely across the Bloomsbury group's interdisciplinary activities and international networks than any previous volume. From innovations in the literary and visual arts to interventions in politics and economic policy, core members including Virginia Woolf, Leonard Woolf, E. M. Forster, Lytton Strachey, Vanessa Bell, Clive Bell, Duncan Grant, Roger Fry, and John Maynard Keynes are explored in relation to a diverse cast of lesser-studied figures to offer an expansive and multifaceted account of the group's achievements and influence. Leading international scholars provide authoritative and accessible commentaries on a variety of topics under the broad headings of 'Aesthetic Bloomsbury,' 'Global Bloomsbury,' 'Intimate Bloomsbury,' and 'Public Bloomsbury.' Whether addressing established narratives or pushing into new critical terrain, the book demonstrates that, more than a century on from its formation, the Bloomsbury group remains an active and dynamic force in the key critical debates of today.

The Strained Alliance: George H. W. Bush, Yitzhak Shamir, and the US–Israel Special Relationship

by David Tal

When George H. W. Bush ascended to the American presidency in 1989, one of the more urgent relationships that he was faced with building was that with Israel's Yitzhak Shamir. Drawing on newly declassified materials, from American and Israeli state and non-state archives, this book reveals the complexities of a relationship defined by both deep cooperation and sharp tensions. From the peace process to loan guarantees, from military aid to emotional diplomacy, The Strained Alliance uncovers the debates, conflicts, and strategic decisions that shaped this critical period between 1989–1992. In doing so, David Tal challenges the traditional perception that US-Israel relations were dominated by policy disagreements, highlighting instead the broader foundation of collaboration that endured behind the scenes. Tal provides fresh insights into the intricate dynamics of diplomacy, ideology, and leadership, offering a balanced perspective on one of the most pivotal chapters in US-Israel history.

The Recognition of Sovereignty: Politics of Empire in Early Anglo-Scottish Literature

by Lee Manion

In this timely and impactful contribution to debates over the relationship between politics and storytelling, Lee Manion uncovers the centrality of narrative to the European concept of sovereignty. In Scottish and English texts traversing the political, the legal, the historiographical, and the literary, and from the medieval through to the early modern period, he examines the tumultuous development of the sovereignty discourse and the previously underappreciated role of narratives of recognition. Situating England and Scotland in a broader interimperial milieu, Manion shows how sovereignty's hierarchies of recognition and stories of origins prevented more equitable political unions. The genesis of this discourse is traced through tracts by Buchanan, Dee, Persons, and Hume; histories by Hardyng, Wyntoun, Mair, and Holinshed; and romances by Malory, Barbour, Spenser, and Melville. Combining formal analysis with empire studies, international relations theory, and political history, Manion reveals the significant consequences of literary writing for political thought.

Science and Humanism: Knowledge, Values, and the Common Good

by Anjan Chakravartty

Historically and conceptually, influential traditions of thought and practice associated with humanism and science have been deeply connected. This book explores some of the most pivotal relations of humanistic and scientific engagement with the world to inspire a reconsideration of them in the present. Collectively, its essays illuminate a fundamental but contested feature of a broadly humanist worldview: the hope that science may help to improve the human condition, as well as the myriad relationships of humanity to the natural and social worlds in which we live. Arguably, these relationships are now more profoundly interwoven with our sciences and technologies than ever before. Addressing scientific and other forms of inquiry, approaches to integrating humanism with science, and cases in which science has failed, succeeded, and could do more to promote our collective welfare, this book enjoins us to articulate a compelling, humanist conception of the sciences for our times. This title is also available as Open Access on Cambridge Core.

Population Control as a Human Right: International Law and the Global Quest to Curb Overpopulation (Human Rights in History)

by Roman Birke

Concerns about global overpopulation spread rapidly in the 1940s and still persist today. The UN Resolution on Human Rights and Family Planning (1968) provided justifications for the argument that population growth endangered the realization of human rights and codified a right to contraception to halt this growth. Conversely, human rights were also invoked on the other side of this debate, with family planning regarded as an essential individual right independent of demographic considerations. Roman Birke explores how human rights became central to this debate, utilised by international actors including NGOs, the women's movement, international lawyers, and institutions such as the United Nations. He analyses how couples' intimate choices related to domestic and international policy, and how this varied across the world, through case studies of India, Ireland, the USA, and Yugoslavia. This is an essential contribution to the evolving literature on the role of reproductive politics in global political landscapes.

The City's Defense: The Bank of England and the Remaking of Economic Governance, 1914–1939 (Studies in Macroeconomic History)

by Robert Yee

In The City's Defense, Robert Yee examines how the City of London maintained its status as an international financial center. He traces the role of the Bank of England in restructuring the domestic, imperial, European, and international monetary systems in the aftermath of the First World War. Responding to mass unemployment and volatile exchange rates, the Bank expanded its reach into areas outside the traditional scope of central banking, including industrial policy and foreign affairs. It designed a system of economic governance that reinforced the preeminence of sterling as a reserve currency. Drawing on a range of archival evidence from national governments, private corporations, and international organizations, Yee reevaluates our understanding of Britain's impact on the global economic order.

Ancient Assyrians: Identity and Society in Antiquity and Beyond

by Jonathan Valk

In this book, Jonathan Valk asks a deceptively simple question: What did it mean to be Assyrian in the second millennium bce? Extraordinary evidence from Assyrian society across this millennium enables an answer to this question. The evidence includes tens of thousands of letters and legal texts from an Assyrian merchant diaspora in what is now modern Turkey, as well as thousands of administrative documents and bombastic royal inscriptions associated with the Assyrian state. Valk develops a new theory of social categories that facilitates an understanding of how collective identities work. Applying this theoretical framework to the so-called Old and Middle Assyrian periods, he pieces together the contours of Assyrian society in each period, as revealed in the abundance of primary evidence, and explores the evolving construction of Assyrian identity as well. Valk's study demonstrates how changing historical circumstances condition identity and society, and that the meaning we assign to identities is ever in flux.

Water into Bones: Birth Rituals, Ancestors, and Religious Pluralism in Northern Madagascar

by Erin K. Nourse

Water into Bones is an ethnographic exploration of the religious practices around birthing and infant care in northern Madagascar. The book highlights the processes by which Malagasy "instill bones" in the newly born by way of haircutting ceremonies, rituals of baptism and circumcision, and the use of "growth medicines" (aody be), teething necklaces, and special jewelries meant to embed the newly born in the powerful legacies of their ancestors.Author Erin Nourse investigates how Malagasy women adhere to ancestral practices and engage with religion around moments of birth in the port city of Diégo Suarez. The people of northern Madagascar have incorporated a plethora of ancestries, ethnicities, and religious practices into their own, sometimes celebrating the hybridity that is their history while also performing rituals and traditions that set groups apart and create distinctive identities. Through women's stories, Water into Bones weaves together a retelling of this history—the traditions that East African, Arab, and Asian migrants brought to the island over the last two millennia; the colonial and postcolonial contexts that shape hybridized religious and lineage-based identities; and the ritual innovations of young Malagasy today whose customs are at once a nod to the ancestors and also, sometimes, a severing of ties with the ancestors as a result of newer Pentecostal and Charismatic religious worldviews. Water into Bones reveals the vast possibilities for creating community, identity, and sacred power through the personal experiences of northern Malagasy women during pregnancy, childbirth, and parenthood.
