Goodness and Tradition (Routledge Studies in Ethics and Moral Theory)
by Irene LiuThis book investigates the importance of spirituality in moral life. The author claims that modern secular morality suffers from a lack of spirituality and argues that a solution to this problem can be found in tradition.Over several centuries, a process of secularization has loosened both the hold and the appeal of religion in the West. Morality did not dissipate, as many feared it would. This book is motivated by the idea that, nevertheless, something important was lost along the way. Arguing that a lack of spirituality has weakened secular moral life, the author seeks to identify an alternative source of spirituality that is not divine or supernatural. To this end, she considers three perspectives that offer potential sources of secular spirituality: Aristotelian humanism, which emphasizes nature; existentialist humanism, which emphasizes freedom and choice; and Confucian humanism, which emphasizes rituals. The author ultimately defends the view that traditions are intrinsically good as creations that elevate human nature through their customs, practices, and institutions. Further, she argues that the initiation into tradition is necessary to bring a person into the “space of reasons,” which encompasses both moral and non-moral values. In consequence, traditions are appropriate objects of existential gratitude, which some theists hold to be the foundation of religious experience. Thus, it is possible to infuse secular moral life with spirituality by reawakening a love for the traditions in which it is already embedded.Goodness and Tradition will appeal to scholars and graduate students in ethics, metaethics, and moral psychology who are interested in questions of moral motivation and experience. It will also appeal to those who are interested in the role of religion in moral life, as well as philosophers who are interested in comparative approaches to Western and Chinese thought.
The Digital Economy and the Productivity Paradox (Routledge Studies in the Economics of Innovation)
by Rafał Wisła Michał WłodarczykDespite the billions of dollars invested in digitalization, productivity growth in developed economies remains sluggish and the promised technological revolution has yet to deliver its full potential. This concise book questions why digitalization is not translating into higher productivity and economic expansion, exploring this paradox through the lens of Schumpeter's creative destruction hypothesis. The book diagnoses and analyses the digital economy as the next stage of socio-economic evolution, with a particular focus on the penetration of digital technologies in the industrial economy. It is geographically limited to the countries of the European Union and the United Kingdom, forming a set of 28 highly developed economies. These countries, characterized by a homogeneous institutional order and varying levels of economic development provide excellent material for testing and verifying economic hypotheses, including Schumpeter's theory of creative destruction. In relation to Schumpeter's theory, there is indeed an observed development of a new sector around a technology that is a radical innovation - the Internet - and the development of technologies based on it, AI, blockchain, cloud computing, etc. However, the rate of technical progress is reaching values close to zero, despite the fact that creative destruction should manifest itself in leaps in productivity. The second point of contention with Schumpeter's theory is the question of oligopolies, which should be the environment most conducive to innovation. However, in the case of the digital economy, productivity growth is most strongly influenced by small and micro-enterprises, which may point to different factors of production than in previous industrial revolutions. This is a practical guide for researchers and advanced students of economics.

Appropriating Technology: How We Make Digital Tools Our Own (Acting with Technology)
by Pierre TchounikineHow we use digital technologies and make them our own.Appropriation is the process by which we turn digital technologies into instruments for our own use. Since we do not use technologies but rather our appropriations of them, understanding why and how these appropriations develop is important and useful for both users and for designers. However, appropriation is an underexplored aspect of human-computer interaction. In Appropriating Technology, Pierre Tchounikine explains that appropriation is constitutive of how we actually use things in practice and is different in nature from the initial process of learning to use a technology. He provides an analysis of the phenomena at play and explains how the way we develop (we evolve, we learn) is key, how our human high-level needs also play an important (though often unconscious) role, how the current adaptation means offered by most technologies give us some degree of freedom to align technologies to our needs and desires (although they are far from fully satisfactory), and how these design aspects may be improved.

Rabelais and His World, a new translation
by Mikhail BakhtinA new and improved translation of Mikhail Bakhtin&’s classic and celebrated study of carnival.Mikhail Bakhtin&’s classic study of carnival, laughter, the grotesque, and medieval and renaissance folk culture has been the inspiration for countless new ideas in the humanities, in literature and the arts, and throughout human culture over the last half century.Rabelais and His World is a study devoted to French Renaissance writer François Rabelais, author of Gargantua and Pantagruel. Rabelais, Bakhtin argues, can only be properly understood against the backdrop of a millennia-old tradition of festivity and laughter, a tradition that included the Roman Saturnalia, medieval carnivals and feasts of fools, and Greek satyr plays and symposia from antiquity, as well as countless medieval works belonging to various smaller genres, circus shows, foul language and gesture, and much more.Bakhtin claims this tradition is united by the imagery it uses and the worldview it expresses. Its imagery is ambivalent. It effaces the boundaries between bodies, connects in one image birth with death, praise with invective. Its worldview is optimistic, defeating all fears and all official seriousness with laughter. The book&’s new translation is informed by recent scholarship on Bakhtin and contains the most extensive scholarly apparatus this book has received to date.

This Is Your Body on Trauma: How to Nourish Safety, Resilience, and Connection with Polyvagal-Informed Nutrition
by Meg BowmanThis Is Your Body on Trauma is the first book to teach readers how to use nutrition to heal underlying trauma that presents in physical symptoms. It features a unique do-it-yourself approach, allowing people to completely customize their care plan.Trauma is pervasive, and recovery usually involves extensive talk therapy. What is often overlooked is using nutrition as a way to restore a sense of safety and self-trust. Research shows between 75 and 90 percent of physician visits are due to the wear and tear on the body from stress hormones. The gut is often our first indicator that something is awry; it is the watchtower raising the alarm, and the existence of trauma can create a negative feedback loop with the brain that leads to several quite common gut-brain axis complaints, such as anxiety, depression, IBS, and pain. More than &“just&” a nutrition book, This Is Your Body on Trauma helps people make connections between what is going on in their mind and body with a unique 360-degree integrative approach to mental health. Using a unique, customizable approach, readers are given a series of experiments based on recommendations, formulating their needs and providing actionable solutions to lessen the perception of stress with nutrition. This book will help people who have experienced traumatic events as both a child and an adult, those who experience chronic stress, as well as people who have experienced food trauma heal and manage the physiological impacts of that trauma throughout their lives. The experiments provided in the book can be done in collaboration with a therapy or nutrition provider. This book is the only one that discusses not only nutrition for trauma (what to eat), but also applies it in a trauma-informed way (how to eat to avoid triggers).

Ancient Women Gardeners: Prelude to the Chacoan World (New Century Gardens and Landscapes of the American Southwest)
by David E. StuartA wholly new perspective on the importance of gardens and agriculture on the Chacoan world, establishing the female dominated gardeners as the basis of Chacoan culture. Author David E. Stuart digs beyond the standard archaeological examination of structures, tools, and rituals of the age to provide a more rounded view of this remarkable culture. An original look at the gardens and gardeners of the Chacoan World, internationally acclaimed ethno-anthropologist David E. Stuart&’s Ancient Women Gardeners: Prelude to the Chacoan World explores the ecological, demographic, and human dynamics that led to Chaco&’s rise and fall from its early beginnings in the 500s AD to its decline during the 1100s AD. The Chacoan system represents North America&’s earliest form of an emergent urban ecology. From its outset, Chacoan farm nodes consisted of widely scattered clusters of gardens connected by roads, way stations, and district granaries. Chaco&’s women gardeners fueled powerful growth that was eventually abandoned as unforeseen dynamics barred the path to long-term sustainability. Stuart considers the intersection of population growth, agricultural yields, crop and soil possibilities, the caloric cost of labor, the corrosive role of pellagra, iron-deficiency anemia, the power of dietary protein in population dynamics, and the limitations imposed by early growth in the San Juan Basin—a land of poor soils, unpredictable rainfall, and rapidly declining wild vegetal foods and game. Focusing on the Chacoan landscape, farming techniques, and a world in which clusters of individual gardening families played a key role in creating an incipient urbanism in the Southwest, Stuart argues that without these accomplished gardening families and their agricultural innovations, there never would have been a &“Chaco Phenomenon.&”
The Uncool: A Memoir
by Cameron Crowe&“Cameron has written a book that feels like music, an intimate souvenir, like a song you can&’t stop listening to.&” —Stevie Nicks The long-awaited memoir by Cameron Crowe—one of America&’s most iconic journalists and filmmakers—The Uncool is a joyful dispatch from a lost world, a chronicle of the real-life events that became Almost Famous, and a coming-of-age journey filled with music legends as you&’ve never seen them before.Cameron Crowe was an unlikely rock and roll insider. Born in 1957 to parents who strictly banned the genre from their house, he dove headfirst into the world of music. By the time he graduated high school at fifteen, Crowe was contributing to Rolling Stone. His parents became believers, uneasily allowing him to interview and tour with legends like Led Zeppelin; Lynyrd Skynyrd; Bob Dylan; Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young; and Fleetwood Mac. The Uncool offers a front-row ticket to the 1970s, a golden era for music and art when rock was young. There&’s no such thing as a media junket—just the rare chance a young writer might be invited along for an adventure. Crowe spends his teens politely turning down the drugs and turning on his tape recorder. He talks his journalism teacher into giving him class credit for his road trip covering Led Zeppelin&’s 1975 tour, which lands him—and the band—on the cover of Rolling Stone. He embeds with David Bowie as the sequestered genius transforms himself into a new persona: the Thin White Duke. Why did Bowie give Crowe such unprecedented access? &“Because you&’re young enough to be honest,&” Bowie tells him. Youth and humility are Crowe&’s ticket into the Eagles&’ dressing room in 1972, where Glenn Frey vows to keep the band together forever; to his first major interview with Kris Kristofferson; to earning the trust of icons like Gregg Allman and Joni Mitchell, who had sworn to never again speak to Rolling Stone. It&’s a magical odyssey, the journey of a teenage writer waved through the door to find his fellow dreamers, music geeks, and lifelong community. It&’s a path that leads him to writing and directing some of the most beloved films of the past forty years, from Fast Times at Ridgemont High and Say Anything... to Jerry Maguire and Almost Famous. His movies often resonate with the music of the artists he first met as a journalist, including Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, the Who, and Pearl Jam. The Uncool is also a surprisingly intimate family drama. If you&’ve seen Almost Famous, you may think you know this story—but you don&’t. For the first time, Crowe opens up about his formative years in Palm Springs and pays tribute to his father, a decorated Army officer who taught him the irreplaceable value of the human voice. Crowe also offers a full portrait of his mother, whose singular spirit helped shape him into an unconventional visionary. With its vivid snapshots of a bygone era and a celebration of creativity and connection, this memoir is an essential read for music lovers or anyone chasing their wildest dreams. At the end of that roller-coaster journey, you might just find what you were looking for: your place in the world.
