Severe and Profound Brain Injury: A Clinician’s Guide to Complex Neuro-Disability

by Sonja Soeterik Sal Connolly Sarah Crawford

Severe and Profound Brain Injury is a comprehensive guide offering clinicians practical tools, techniques, and ways to structure thinking in approaching how to best assess and provide neurorehabilitation to patients with the most overwhelming and complex neuro-disability. Advances in acute care will lead to increasing numbers of people surviving with complex neuro-disability and more families will be challenged by a confusing and devastating form of loss. Most clinicians will not have encountered this level of impairment in clinical practice and can feel deskilled, challenged by how best to help, and overpowered by the questions it raises. This book proposes a paradigm shift in how to assess and formulate the cognitive, behavioural, and emotional difficulties in complex neuro-disability. The task for clinicians is to look for ability in the face of global impairment, rather than focus on areas of disability. Practical advice is provided on how to approach thinking about the issues and design bespoke, person-centred assessments from first principles with robust methodology. Prolonged disorders of consciousness and locked in syndrome are discussed in detail. Guidance is given to keeping the person at the centre of decision-making and intervention planning, particularly as so many will lack mental capacity and require best interests’ decisions to be made on their behalf. This is essential reading for established clinicians wanting to develop expertise working with these patients and their families, clinical psychologists, neuropsychologists, other health professionals, students, and trainees.

Everyday Life and Urban Studies: Moving With Lefebvre Towards the 21st Century

by Sabine Knierbein

Everyday Life and Urban Studies revisits the ordinary routines that shape urban life during the crises-ridden last century and early new millennium. Vast parts of Henri Lefebvre’s intellectual work on everyday life however remain underappreciated in urban studies. This book seeks to re-integrate Lefebvre’s Critique of Everyday Life into studies of urbanization. Starting in the 1920s, the book realigns historical insights with contemporary urban phenomena to uncover patterns of capitalist urbanization. By showing the relevance of grasping the minutiae of everyday life to understanding cities, the urban and urbanization today; everyday life, space, and philosophy are brought back in tension. This work combines analytical-methodological exploration, pedagogic mission, and theoretical advances to carve out an everyday-theory-based approach to urban studies situated at the interface of the spatial arts, the humanities, and the social sciences. This book examines the transformative potential that lies hidden in everyday life thereby unravelling a way to nurture hope amid unsettled urban conditions. The book is essential for students, faculty, and researchers in the fields of urban studies, city planning, urban design, human geography, sociology, cultural studies, and political science.

Bringing Their Mother Home: Roman Multiculturalism and the Mother of the Gods

by Krishni Burns

Bringing Their Mother Home examines the worship of the Greco-Phrygian goddess Cybele, known as the Magna Mater in Rome, to understand the ways that the mid- to late-Roman Republic constructed and performed a multicultural, multiethnic identity. The goddess, originally worshiped in ancient Turkey, was brought by the Romans to their city in 204 BCE and renamed the Magna Mater (the Great Mother). Previous scholarship contended that the Romans feared and hated the goddess and her followers because they were foreign and gender nonconforming, but author Krishni Burns argues that the Romans embraced the Magna Mater and her genderfluid followers as they created a space for multiculturalism at a time when Rome was expanding rapidly across the Mediterranean. By importing the cult and ritually performing the Magna Mater's blended Phrygian and Roman identity, the Roman state was able to ease the process of incorporating the eastern Mediterranean kingdoms into its hegemony. Drawing on historical, literary, and archaeological evidence, Bringing Their Mother Home reevaluates the semiotics and practices of the Magna Mater cult as a way to perform the multicultural Roman identity and explores the political and military climate of the Mediterranean leading up to the cult's adoption in 204 BCE.
