The Psychology of Blindness and Visual Culture: Towards a New Ecological Model of Visual Impairment
by Simon HayhoeThe Psychology of Blindness and Visual Culture: Towards a New Ecological Model of Visual Impairment advances the debate regarding the inclusion and wellbeing of people with visual impairment (PVI) through looking at the psychological nature of visual culture and its effects on the lived experience. It explores whether it is possible to increase access to visual culture for PVI through language, alternative sensory data or contemporary communication media, and in so doing, questions whether or not communication and culture are intrinsically visual.Occupying a unique field of study by focusing on the understanding of visual culture and visual communication by PVI in real-world settings, this empirical book examines the difference between the understanding of visual culture and visual communication by PVI who acquire their visual impairments late in life and PVI who acquire their visual impairments early in life. Understanding these concepts not only helps us to understand how PVI feel socially included in visual culture, but also how culture and artifacts are conceptualized verbally, culturally and through the senses. It is compelling reading for advanced students of psychology and philosophy, and those studying learning in cultural settings, and in museum studies, computer science, disability studies, education and fine art management.

Sustainability in Food Packaging: Systems, Actors and Innovation
by Henri Hakala Nina Tynkkynen Ilkka Leinonen Vilja Varho Maria Åkerman Ali HarlinThe sustainability of food packaging is a key priority in the food industry, as plastic waste and littering have become global concerns. Packaging waste accounts for over half of total global waste, predominantly from single-use plastic food packaging. Production of packaging consumes significant natural resources and contributes to climate change and pollution. However, packaging is also crucial for reducing food waste, protecting food safety, and providing vital information about contents, making it an essential sustainability solution, not just a problem. Sustainability Transition in Food Packaging: Systems, Actors, and Innovation explores sustainable food packaging from an interdisciplinary perspective, integrating economics, environmental science, technology, social sciences and cultural studies. This broad approach expands beyond the traditional focus on packaging as a product, considering its content and the services it provides. While sustainable packaging is often defined by four principles—effectiveness, efficiency, circularity, and safety—current applications primarily focus on the packaging itself, overlooking broader impacts such as marine and soil littering. Life cycle assessments (LCA) of packaging frequently ignore social, cultural, and economic sustainability aspects and often fail to account for the diverse interpretations of LCA standards. While the Product Environmental Footprint (PEF) offers a uniform solution, challenges remain due to undefined packaging category rules. Food packaging is rapidly evolving, driven by innovation, political action, and consumer demand. Given the global and varied nature of the food supply chain, one-size-fits-all solutions are insufficient. This book offers a holistic, interdisciplinary approach to sustainability, fostering dialogue and research across different research fields. It examines different conceptualizations of sustainable food packaging including methods for analyzing sustainability. The volume introduces novel methodologies, such as LCA with a focus on littering, and provides insights on overcoming the challenges of transitioning to a more sustainable food packaging system.

The Sociology of African American Patriotism: Contradictions, Religiosity and Constructive Attitudes (Routledge Research in Race and Ethnicity)
by Yoshito IshioThis book offers a sociological examination of the reasons why African Americans feel love toward their country in spite of continuing to perceive or experience racial prejudice and discrimination against themselves and other African Americans. Dr. Ishio conducted face-to-face, in-depth interviews with college-educated African Americans in Texas between 2014 and 2015. The main conclusion of this study is that contradictory trends marked by persistent racism and racial progress, combined with the effects of Christian faith/practice fostered in the Black Church and the effects of foundational principles of the United States, have molded a distinctive form of patriotism among African Americans for whom this country is their homeland. This book presents an insightful analysis by a Japanese sociologist.Every important finding in this book is supported by interviewees’ statements, making it easy for readers to follow the points being made and to understand African Americans’ perspectives. Numerous interviewees’ statements are judiciously inserted so that readers can virtually “hear” interviewees’ voices describing their experiences and views.A unique study of African Americans and their feelings of patriotism, it will appeal to scholars and researchers with interests in the sociology of race and ethnicity, Black studies, and the sociology of religion.
Applications of Immersive Technology in Architecture, Engineering and Construction: A Handbook (Spon Research)
by Colin A. Booth Patrick Manu Abdul-Majeed Mahamadu Abhinesh PrabhakaranThis edited book addresses a gap in literature by advancing current understandings of the applications of immersive technology within the architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) sector.Globally, the architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) sector makes an enormous contribution to the socio-economic development of nations, which is primarily evidenced by its creation/provision of the built environment. The sector has, however, often been criticised for inefficiencies, waste and diverse forms of adverse impacts that are associated with the lifecycle of the provision of built assets – design, construction, operations and maintenance and end-of-life phases. Over the years, the inefficiencies, waste and adverse impacts have often been a catalyst for calls and initiatives to transform the AEC sector. The advent of the fourth industrial revolution (commonly referred to as, ‘Industry 4.0’), which entails the automation and digitalisation of production, presents opportunities to leverage emerging technologies to improve the image and productivity of the sector. Prominent among the emerging technologies in the Industry 4.0 era is that of immersive technology, which includes virtual reality, mixed reality and augmented reality. The capability of immersive technology to deliver beneficial impacts for multiple construction sector stakeholders throughout the construction lifecycle has been acknowledged within the industry and this continues to stimulate interest amongst practitioners, policymakers and researchers. Despite this phenomenon, at present there is no dedicated compendium of research-informed text that focusses on the multifaceted applications of immersive technology throughout the lifecycle of the provision of built assets right from concept design to end-of-life.This book thus addresses this gap in literature by advancing current understanding of the applications of immersive technology within the AEC industry. Readers will understand how the technologies are applied, the resulting array of impacts including benefits, drawbacks, challenges and future directions for applications, research and development.
Management, Organizations, and Paradoxes: Insights from the Central and Eastern European Region (Routledge Studies in Management, Organizations and Society)
by Malgorzata Rozkwitalska-Welenc, Agnieszka Zakrzewska-Bielawska, and Anna Maria LisParadoxical tensions are persistently inevitable in today’s complex organizational world. Therefore, managers should perceive them as a lens through which they see organizations and work through them. Reconciling paradoxes requires understanding their nature and appraising them. It also involves novelty and creativity in implemented tactics. Thus, to help managers navigate dualities and contradictions in their organizations, Management, Organizations, and Paradoxes presents a comprehensive overview of implementing the paradox theory from a distinct organizational standpoint in the Central and Eastern European (CEE) context. Beyond theoretical foundations, it integrates recent research findings and practical insights, providing rich knowledge for managing conflicting demands across diverse organizational dimensions. In addition, it unlocks new insights that can enrich academic discourse and guide practitioners in embracing a paradox mindset. It develops less-explored areas, such as paradox regarding sustainability in clusters, or digital and energy transition. It also explores paradox in human resource management, workplace learning, diversity, equity, and inclusion policy. It tests whether paradoxes have regional variation and provides insight from managerial practices in CEE. The authors prove that organizations embracing paradox can expand the scope of their opportunities and thrive. This monograph can serve as a scholarly guide for managers, academics, and Ph.D students, encouraging them to analyze and manage organizations from a paradox angle.
Sellars and Davidson in Dialogue: Truths, Meanings, and Minds (Routledge Studies in American Philosophy)
by Willem A. deVries and Marc A. JosephWilfrid Sellars and Donald Davidson were two of the most influential American philosophers of the 20th century. This volume explores the deep similarities and differences between these two philosophers. Both Sellars and Davidson worked through the mid-to-late 20th-century re-evaluation of the empiricist inheritance that shaped what became analytic philosophy, and both are critical of key elements of that picture. In the broadest terms, both philosophers challenge the solipsistic, mentalistic conception of knowledge and meaning that informs the tradition and set in its place systems of interrelated views that prioritize a holistic and social conception of mind, action, and language. At the same time, there are several differences in method and philosophical semantics that divide Sellars and Davidson. The chapters in this volume address the deep relations of Sellars’ and Davidson’s views on mind, language, and knowledge. They demonstrate how, despite coming from different assumptions and methodologies, Sellars and Davidson converge on a view that essentially erases the philosophy of language as a separate discipline and embeds it in the philosophy of action.Sellars and Davidson in Dialogue will appeal to scholars and advanced students interested in the history of analytic philosophy, epistemology, philosophy of language, and philosophy of mind.
The Years of the Infidels: African Latin Christianity from the Vandals to the Almohads
by Marco CristiniThis book examines African Latin Christianity from the fifth to the thirteenth century, exploring the complex interactions between local Christian communities and Vandals, Byzantines, and Arabs.Focusing on the resilience of successive generations of African Christians and their capacity to adapt to challenging political circumstances, Marco Cristini delves into their relationships with local rulers, popes, and European sovereigns such as Charlemagne. He argues that the history of Augustine’s heirs represents a crucial phase in the transformation of the Mediterranean’s religious landscape during Late Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages. This book offers readers fresh insights into much-debated topics, including the role of religious otherness under the Vandals, Justinian’s religious policies, Christian-Muslim relations, and the impact of Western medieval missionaries on indigenous Christian communities. It also sheds light on the remarkable longevity of African Latin Christianity, demonstrating its ability to not only survive but also thrive under ‘heretical’ or ‘infidel’ rulers for nearly eight centuries. With its accessible, in-depth, and comprehensive analysis, this book is an essential resource for scholars, postgraduates, and undergraduates interested in Late Antiquity, the Early Middle Ages, the history of North Africa, pre-modern Christianity, early Islam, and the Crusades.

Valencian Folktales, Volume 3: Enric Valor (Routledge Studies in Twentieth-Century Literature)
by Paul Scott Derrick Maria-Lluïsa Gea-ValorEnric Valor (1911–2000) is one of the most important Valencian authors of the 20th century. This third selection of his highly popular rondalles (folktales) will complete the publication of his folktales in English translation. At a time when Catalan was under threat from the cultural bulldozer of the Franco regime, which condemned the use of anything but Castilian Spanish in public communication, Valor went to great lengths to disseminate knowledge of the language, through writing grammar and linguistic studies (as well as teaching it to fellow inmates when he was imprisoned by the regime for his cultural activities). These tales, collected over a number of years in small villages in the province of Alacant, were a significant part of his ongoing efforts to safeguard the Catalan language and the culture and history of the region. The Rondalles Valencianes have been compared to Italo Calvino’s Italian Folk Tales and Henri Pourrat’s Treasury of French Folk Tales. Like them, Valor aimed in rewriting the oral material to establish a common national body of folk narratives and to make the stories more appealing to Valencian readers, young and old alike. The critical introduction provides a classification of the tales in terms of themes and motifs and also explores relevant historical and social aspects that characterize Valor’s folktale corpus.
The Future of Outer Space Law (Routledge Research in Air and Space Law)
by Anna Marie BrennanThis book identifies and discusses problems and opportunities for the future theory and practice of outer space law.The corpus of outer space law, including the Outer Space Treaty 1967, has faced multiple challenges and critiques. In recent times, these have included advances in technology, the militarisation of outer space, space debris, and geopolitics. The prominent and emerging contributors to this collection draw on diverse research frameworks to discuss proposals for the future of outer space law and policy. These include addressing regulatory gaps and under-examined and emerging areas of the law, but also beyond, the Outer Space Treaty – especially related to potential extraterrestrial settlements, satellites technology, self-defence, self-determination, and the environment. The book discusses the tensions between universalism and localisation, as well as the regionalisation of outer space law and policy – and how these approaches might adapt to create a dynamic space industry for the future. This book is both practical and theoretical in scope and will be of interest to academics, researchers and students. It will also be of interest to international organisations, diplomats, and other government officials and policymakers.
