Understanding Crime Trends in a Hybrid Society: The Digital Drift (SpringerBriefs in Criminology)
by Stefano Caneppele Fernando Miró-Llinares Marcelo F. AebiThis open access book critically revisits 30 years of debate surrounding the evolution of crime trends, aiming to reconcile various hypotheses and controversies. It scrutinizes the concept of the "crime drop," highlighting the methodological pitfalls in understanding the causation mechanisms behind this phenomenon. By examining the impact of information and communication technologies (ICT) on daily routines and crime, the book challenges traditional notions of crime reduction. Drawing on extensive examples, data from official and non-official statistics, and crime surveys, this book illustrates how cyberspace has fundamentally reshaped the nature of crime. Despite this transformation, integrating cybercrime into conventional crime statistics remains an unaccomplished task. The book offers a thorough methodological discussion on measuring cybercrime, addressing the challenges researchers face in quantifying and explaining crimes committed both in cyberspace and across physical and digital boundaries. This book speaks to students, academics, researchers, and practitioners in the fields of criminology, criminal justice, and cybercrime. It is an invaluable resource for anyone seeking to understand the complexities of modern crime trends and the challenges posed by the digital age.
Pediatric Nonadherence: A Solutions Based Approach
by Peter Silver Victor Fornari Ida DancygerNonadherence to pediatric recommendations is a pervasive challenge to the growth, development, and wellbeing of children. Nearly half of all youth and their parents suffer the consequences of misunderstanding, forgetting, ignoring or refusing professional medical advice regarding children. Addressing this widespread dilemma, this unique and comprehensive title explores a variety of different pediatric problems that impact children, adolescents and their families. Clinical case vignettes are provided to highlight particular considerations, and a description of the most up-to-date strategies to solve the dilemma of nonadherence to pediatric care is provided. Indeed, technology is emphasized as an important and innovative means of tracking, interfacing and gathering individual data and facilitating improved pediatric adherence. No one intervention strategy can be applied to solve nonadherence of pediatric patients. Research studies have concluded that successful efforts to enhance adherence rely on a number of important elements. First and foremost is nurturing a trusting relationship between the patient, the family and the clinician, which strengthens the therapeutic alliance. Following that is making sure that the patient and family fully understand the nature of the illness and the recommendations. Effective and clear communication is critical between the health professionals, the patient and the family. When the health professional understands who the patient and the family are on a deeper level, then adherence may be improved. It is imperative that the clinicians take into account the individual patient and families’ cultural, social and community context, as well as their beliefs and support systems. An atmosphere of shared collaboration and mutual respect will improve open communication and the promotion of adherence and positive outcomes. An important thread throughout each chapter is the impact of health care disparities, diversity and equity. The contributors to Pediatric Nonadherence represent a wide range of nationally and internationally recognized experts in their area of pediatric sub-specialization and practice. A major contribution to the clinical literature, this timely title will be of great interest to pediatricians, family practitioners, medical students, residents, fellows, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners.
Guide to Equine Assisted Therapy
by Yuval Neria Allan J. Hamilton Prudence W. FisherApproximately one in five adults and one in seven children and youth suffer from mental health disorder over their life span. Yet, available treatments for mental health problems are only moderately effective, and about half of those who need treatment are not benefitted by current treatments, and many don’t even seek them. Equine-assisted therapy is a novel, experiential treatment approach showing significant promise for adults, children and youth across a range of mental health problems. These treatments use a horse (or horses) to facilitate communication and mindful awareness of thoughts, emotions and behaviors in an experientially oriented approach via groundwork or riding. Interactions with horses have shown to foster emotional regulation, self-confidence, reflection, and insight, by which well-being is facilitated. The current book describes the rational for these treatments, add to the knowledge about recent progress in applying them to posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and more, and analyze the nature of the bonding between humans and equines which makes these relationships so therapeutic and healing.

Abbreviating Middle English: Scribal Practices, Visual Texts and Medieval Multimodalities (The New Middle Ages)
by Justyna Rogos-HebdaAbbreviating Middle English: Scribal practices, Visual Texts and Medieval Multimodalities investigates the changing dynamics of scribal abbreviating practices in a corpus of late Middle English manuscripts of Richard Rolle’s, John Lydgate’s and John Gower’s works and reinterprets these practices from new perspectives of visual pragmatics, medieval multimodalities and visual code-switching. Spanning the boundaries of manuscript studies, cultural semiotics and text-image approaches to pre-modern written sources, the book studies scribal abbreviations and medieval visuality and links them with modern practices of textuality by combining tools and methods of traditional disciplines employed in the study of historical texts as well as those developed for the analyses of modern discourse. Justyna Rogos-Hebda outlines the main directions in abbreviation studies, describes research methods and considers the broader developments in manuscript studies integrating aspects of materialist philology, multimodality theory, visual pragmatics and visual and code-switching into descriptive-analytical models of medieval textualities. Rogos-Hebda aims to problematize abbreviation within the socio-cultural contexts of medieval mentalities, Christian hermeneutics and Middle English multilingualism to unpack the multilayered motivations for the practices of scribal communities.

Banking on (Artificial) Intelligence: Navigating the Realities of AI in Financial Services
by Theodora LauThere is no lack of hype around artificial intelligence. We have only begun to scratch the surface of what this powerful technology can do. While tech and financial services become more intertwined, cutting through the noise has become more difficult but also more crucial. As a technology, AI is essential to advancing innovation, to creating efficiencies, and enhancing productivity while capturing opportunities by both incumbent financial institutions as well as fintechs. But it also comes with risks and potential for biases and disinformation, that can deepen inequalities and erode trust in our society. Responsible innovation must become part of our DNA and not as an afterthought. This book provides a tailored overview of what AI specifically means for financial services, a highly regulated yet also disrupted industry. It investigates the current state of AI applications in financial services today along with the state of funding and partnerships between tech and banking industries. It also examines the key pillars of responsible AI and the importance of keeping humans in the loop. The book takes a deep dive into the use cases in the financial services industry, the challenges and opportunities, and the fragmented regulatory landscape. How can we effectively assess risks, and balance innovation and customer centricity with trust in AI in financial services? Can smaller organizations reap the benefits of the technology? How can institutions deploy AI responsibly and securely, and promote a fairer and more equitable future for more people? While data is about bits and bytes, the realities of AI is very much human. This book will help spark dialogue and collaboration as we journey into the future.

Forgotten Streams in the History of 19th-Century German Psychology: Volume 1: Empirical, Romantic, and Idealist Psychologies (Theory and History in the Human and Social Sciences)
by Carlos Cornejo Cristián Hernández MaturanaThe 19th century was a defining era for psychology, rich with an intellectual diversity that shaped modern thought but which remains largely overlooked. The roots of 20th century thought can be traced to the 19th century, when a mechanical worldview took hold, society grew increasingly secular, modern urban metropolises emerged, and evolutionist ideas reshaped the understanding of nature’s developmental principles. Throughout this century, the natural sciences extended beyond their traditional limits, influencing and reshaping the human, moral, and social sciences, among which psychology was especially impacted, as this transformation sparked profound debates on the very possibility of a science of the soul. Forgotten Streams in the History of 19th-Century German Psychology recovers the vibrant roots of psychology in empiricism, romanticism, idealism, phenomenology, among other streams of thought that explored consciousness, the soul, and the self before experimental psychology took center stage. Unlike the standard view, this book invites readers to reconsider psychology’s history, revealing a complex landscape that questions the simplistic story of a linear path toward empiricism. Through profiles of significant yet forgotten thinkers, this work uncovers how their ideas contributed to discussions of the unconscious, mind-body duality, and inner experience. Written by leading scholars, each chapter offers a unique window into an intellectual movement that continues to influence debates in psychology, philosophy, and beyond. Essential for historians, psychologists, and anyone curious about psychology’s deeper origins, Forgotten Streams is an indispensable reference that fills an important gap, enriching our understanding of psychology’s complex and multifaceted development.
