Hollywood As Historian: American Film in a Cultural Context

by Peter C. Rollins

“A commendably comprehensive analysis of the issue of Hollywood’s ability to shape our minds . . . invigorating reading.” ?BooklistFilm has exerted a pervasive influence on the American mind, and in eras of economic instability and international conflict, the industry has not hesitated to use motion pictures for propaganda purposes. During less troubled times, citizens’ ability to deal with political and social issues may be enhanced or thwarted by images absorbed in theaters. Tracking the interaction of Americans with important movie productions, this book considers such topics as racial and sexual stereotyping; censorship of films; comedy as a tool for social criticism; the influence of “great men” and their screen images; and the use of film to interpret history. Hollywood As Historian benefits from a variety of approaches. Literary and historical influences are carefully related to The Birth of a Nation and Apocalypse Now, two highly tendentious epics of war and cultural change. How political beliefs of filmmakers affected cinematic styles is illuminated in a short survey of documentary films made during the Great Depression. Historical distance has helped analysts decode messages unintended by filmmakers in the study of The Snake Pit and Dr. Strangelove. Hollywood As Historian offers a versatile, thought-provoking text for students of popular culture, American studies, film history, or film as history. Films considered include: The Birth of a Nation (1915), The Plow that Broke the Plains (1936), The River (1937), March of Time (1935-1953), City Lights (1931), Modern Times (1936), The Great Dictator (1940), The Grapes of Wrath (1940), Native Land (1942), Wilson (1944), The Negro Soldier (1944), The Snake Pit (1948), On the Waterfront (1954), Dr. Strangelove (1964), Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1966), and Apocalypse Now (1979).“Recommended reading for anyone concerned with the influence of popular culture on the public perception of history.” ?American Journalism

At the Decisive Point in the Sinai: Generalship in the Yom Kippur War (Foreign Military Studies)

by General Jacob Even Colonel Simcha B. Maoz

A commander and an officer with the IDF recount their experiences in the Yom Kippur War, offering insight into Israel&’s military leadership. At the Decisive Point in the Sinai is a firsthand account of Operation Stouthearted Men—arguably the 1973 Yom Kippur War&’s most intense engagement. General Jacob Even and Colonel Simcha B. Maoz were key leaders in Major General Ariel Sharon&’s division. Together, Even and Maoz recount the initial stages of the Suez crossing, examine the Israel Defense Forces&’ (IDF) response to Egypt&’s surprise attack, and explain Sharon&’s role in the transition from defense to offense. They detail Sharon&’s struggle to convince his superiors of his plan and argue that an effective division commander is not only revealed by his leadership of subordinates but also by his ability to influence his senior officers. Even and Maoz challenge students of military leadership by offering a case study on effective leadership. &“At the Decisive Point is the single best volume I have ever read on the Yom Kippur War. It bridges the gap between the two standard forms of writing on the 1973 conflict?the memoir and the historical monograph?and does so in a very effective manner.&” —Robert M. Citino, author of The Wehrmacht Retreats: Fighting a Lost War, 1943 &“The authors&’ work, in sum, presents an interesting and informative account of the Yom Kippur War on the Sinai front.&” —Israel Affairs

Harry Dean Stanton: Hollywood's Zen Rebel (Screen Classics Ser.)

by Joseph B. Atkins

The first biography of the man Vanity Fair described as “the philosopher poet of character acting.”After a series of minor parts in forgettable westerns, Harry Dean Stanton gradually began to get film roles that showcased his laid-back acting style, appearing in Cool Hand Luke, Kelly’s Heroes, The Godfather: Part II, and Alien. He became a headliner in the eighties?starring in Wim Wenders’s moving Paris, Texas and Alex Cox’s Repo Man?but it was his extraordinary skill as a character actor that established him as a revered cult figure and kept him in demand throughout his career. Here, Joseph B. Atkins unwinds Stanton’s enigmatic persona, shedding light on his early life in West Irvine, Kentucky, and exploring his difficult relationship with his Baptist parents, his service in the Navy, and the events that inspired him to drop out of college and pursue acting. Atkins also chronicles Stanton’s early years in California, describing how he honed his craft at the renowned Pasadena Playhouse before breaking into television and movies. In addition to examining his acclaimed body of work, Atkins explores Harry Dean Stanton as a Hollywood legend, following his years rooming with Jack Nicholson, partying with David Crosby and Mama Cass, jogging with Bob Dylan, and playing poker with John Huston. Stanton is often remembered for his crowd-pleasing roles in movies like Pretty in Pink or Escape from New York, but this impassioned biography illuminates the entirety of his incredible sixty-year career, drawing on interviews with the actor’s friends, family, and colleagues.

Microelectrofluidic Systems: Modeling and Simulation (Nano- and Microscience, Engineering, Technology and Medicine)

by Tianhao Zhang Krishnendu Chakrabarty Richard B. Fair

Composite systems that integrate microelectromechanical and microelectrofluidic (MEF) components with electronics are emerging as the next generation of system-on-a-chip (SOC) designs. However, there remains a pressing need for a structured methodology for MEFS design automation, including modeling techniques and simulation and optimization tools. Integrating top-down and bottom-up design philosophies, Microelectrofluidic Systems presents the first comprehensive design strategy for MEFS. This strategy supports hierarchical modeling and simulation from the component level to the system level. It leads to multi-objective optimization tools valuable in all phases of the design process, from conceptualization to final manufacturing. The authors begin by defining the basic variables and elements needed to describe MEFS behavior, then model that behavior across three layers of abstraction: the low-level component, high-level reconfigurable architecture, and bio/chemical application layers. They have developed a hierarchical integrated design environment with SystemC and present its architecture and associated functional packages. Microelectrofluidic Systems is visionary in its leverage of electronic design principles for microsystem design and heralds a new era of automated SOC design. The strategy it presents holds the potential for significant reductions in design time and life-cycle maintenance costs, and its techniques and tools for robust design and application flexibility can lead to the high-volume production needed for the inevitably growing product market.

Grieving for Guava: Stories (University Press Of Kentucky New Poetry And Prose Ser.)

by Cecilia M. Fernandez

“A magnificent portrayal of every facet of the Cuban exile experience. Haunting short stories convey the pain, loss, longing, and courage of the exiles.” —Dan Wakefield, author of Kurt Vonnegut: The Making of a WriterCastro’s communist regime gained control of Cuba in 1959, sparking a surge of immigration to the United States, particularly Miami, as refugees sought a better life. But for many, Cuba will always be home. The island’s stories pass from refugee to refugee, immigrant to grandchild, mingling hope for the future with grief for what’s lost. Yet these stories also pass down a deep, unconscious desire for the unattainable, which often results in fractured relationships and a loss of purpose for both young and old.Grieving for Guava revels in the unbroken ties between past and future, Havana and Miami, and recounts the unintended generational costs of immigration. Ten stories explore the lives of Cuban refugees in Miami as they grapple with a longing for the past and a fervent need to move forward. Spanning six decades of the Cuban exile, these stories lay bare a collective struggle to overcome the destabilizing effects of migration and to reassemble splintered identities: A journalist returns to the island for a childhood toy. An investment banker leaves Miami to open a bookstore near the Malecon. A girl with cerebral palsy attempts to swim across the ocean to reach her lost home. Cecilia Fernandez artfully weaves together the complicated lives of her characters to produce an overarching sense of yearning for the past, transforming grief into an even more powerful force: communion.“What a lovely tribute to the author’s roots and to her tribe of early exiles!” —Mirta Ojito, author of Hunting Season
