Revelation for the Rest of Us: A Prophetic Call to Follow Jesus as a Dissident Disciple

by Scot McKnight Cody Matchett

See how the Book of Revelation can be read as a book of discipleship, challenging Christ-followers everywhere to live as hopeful agents of resistance and transformation. The last book of the Bible frustrates and frightens many people with its imagery and apocalyptic tone. Popular interpretations rely on fear and politicization and often lead to pride and alienation of others. Is this really how we were intended to read John&’s Revelation? In Revelation for the Rest of Us, Scot McKnight with Cody Matchett explore the key message of Revelation and how it:Calls us to be faithful and hopeful witnesses to Jesus.Stimulates our imagination to see the world through the eyes of God and excite our faith.Challenges us to stand against the militarism, economic exploitation, oppression, and injustice of worldly authorities.McKnight addresses the popular misconceptions about the book, explaining what John means in his use of the images of dragons, lambs, and beasts; and how the symbolism of Revelation spoke in the days of Rome and still speaks powerfully to the present day—though not in the way most people think. You&’ll learn to see the Book of Revelation in a fresh and hopeful new way. Rising Tides: Climate Refugees in the Twenty-First Century (Encounters: Explorations in Folklore and Ethnomusicology)

by John R. Wennersten and Denise Robbins

&“Deals masterfully with a neglected crisis, how climate change is driving migration . . . The work broaches solutions both practical . . . and political.&”—Christopher E. Goldthwait, former US Ambassador With global climate change upon us, it is imperative to start thinking about the massive numbers of people who will be displaced by environmental crises. The rise in sea levels alone will account for hundreds of millions of refugees around the globe. In Rising Tides, John R. Wennersten and Denise Robbins face the difficult questions that will have to be answered: How will people be relocated and settled? Is it possible to offer environmental refugees temporary or permanent asylum? Will these refugees have any collective rights in the new areas they inhabit? And lastly, who will pay the costs of all the affected countries during the process of resettlement? Offering an essential, continent-by-continent look at these dangers, Rising Tides is &“a passionately argued, well-documented wake-up call on the dire, current and undeniable human fallout from climate change. Looking behind the headlines, it connects the dots in a way that will inform and should alarm us all&” (Eugene L. Meyer, author of Five for Freedom). &“This chilling and urgent call to action spares no detail in its mission to present the facts on a looming humanitarian disaster. Climate-change warning messages too often focus on the environment without going into specifics of how humans will be hurt by global warming. Rising Tides singlehandedly rectifies this issue.&”—Foreword Reviews &“A must read for policymakers and those in positions of power, especially the ones who remain in a state of denial about climate change and refuse to do enough to address the crisis.&”—The Hindu

Map of a Nation: A Biography of the Ordnance Survey

by Rachel Hewitt

This &“absorbing history of the Ordnance Survey&”—the first complete map of the British Isles—"charts the many hurdles map-makers have had to overcome&” (The Guardian, UK). Map of a Nation tells the story of the creation of the Ordnance Survey map, the first complete, accurate, affordable map of the British Isles. The Ordnance Survey is a much beloved British institution, and this is—amazingly—the first popular history to tell the story of the map and the men who dreamt and delivered it. The Ordnance Survey&’s history is one of political revolutions, rebellions and regional unions that altered the shape and identity of the United Kingdom over the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. It&’s also a deliciously readable account of one of the great untold British adventure stories, featuring intrepid individuals lugging brass theodolites up mountains to make the country visible to itself for the first time.

Russia's Steppe Frontier: The Making of a Colonial Empire, 1500-1800 (Indiana-Michigan Series in Russian and East European Studies)

by Michael Khodarkovsky

This study of Russia&’s colonial expansion across the Eurasian steppe is &“a tremendously important contribution to the field of Russian history&” (Valerie Kivelson). From the decline of the Mongol Golden Horde to the end of the 18th century, the Russian government expanded its influence and power throughout its southern borderlands. The process of incorporating these lands and peoples into the Russian Empire was not only a military and political struggle but also a cultural contest between the indigenous worlds of the steppe and Russian imperial hegemony. Drawing on sources and archival materials in Russian and Turkic languages, Michael Khodarkovsky presents a complex picture of the encounter between the Russian authorities and native peoples. A major contribution to the comparative study of empires and frontiers, &“no other work treats Moscow's colonial expansion to the south and east so competently&” (Russia).

Muslim Americans in the Military: Centuries of Service (Encounters: Explorations in Folklore and Ethnomusicology)

by Edward E. Curtis IV

Stories of Muslims who have served, dating back to the Revolutionary War. Curtis illuminates the long history of Muslim service members who have defended their country and struggled to practice their faith. With profiles of soldiers, marines, airmen, and sailors since the dawn of our country, Curtis showcases the real stories of Muslim Americans, from Omer Otmen, who fought fiercely against German forces during World War I, to Captain Humayun Khan, who gave his life in Iraq in 2004. These true stories contradict the narratives of hate and fear that have dominated recent headlines, revealing the contributions and sacrifices that these soldiers have made to the United States.

Fighting for America: The Struggle for Mastery in North America, 1519–1871 (Encounters: Explorations in Folklore and Ethnomusicology)

by Jeremy Black

&“Fascinating . . . [a] 300-plus year history of North America&” from the award-winning historian and author of The Holocaust: History & Memory (Military Heritage). Prize-winning author Jeremy Black traces the competition for control of North America from the landing of Spanish troops under Hernán Cortés in modern Mexico in 1519 to 1871 when, with the Treaty of Washington and the withdrawal of most British garrisons, Britain accepted American mastery in North America. In this wide-ranging narrative, Black makes clear that the process by which America gained supremacy was far from inevitable. The story Black tells is one of conflict, diplomacy, geopolitics, and politics. The eventual result was the creation of a United States of America that stretched from Atlantic to Pacific and dominated North America. The gradual withdrawal of France and Spain, the British accommodation to the expanding U.S. reality, the impact of the American Civil War, and the subjugation of Native peoples, are all carefully drawn out. Black emphasizes contingency not Manifest Destiny, and reconceptualizes American exceptionalism to take note of the pressures and impact of international competition. &“A refreshing take on Manifest Destiny . . . American (and Canadian) readers will learn a lot of new things and be led into new ways of viewing old ones. An important contribution.&”—Walter Nugent, author of Into the West: The Story of Its People

Broken Wings: The Hungarian Air Force, 1918–45 (Encounters: Explorations in Folklore and Ethnomusicology)

by Stephen L. Renner

This &“outstanding piece of research&” on Hungary&’s secret air force program &“fills a critical gap in our understanding&” of pre-WWII military advancement (John H. Morrow Jr., author of The Great War). In the aftermath of World War I, Hungary was officially banned from maintaining a military air service. Despite this mandate, however, the embattled nation was determined to rearm itself. Drawing upon a wealth of previously untranslated documents, this fascinating history reveals the story of how Hungary secretly built an entire air force during the interwar years. In the early 1920s, Hungarian officials managed to evade and obstruct Allied inspectors at every turn. Unable to pursue domestic manufacturing, the clandestine rearmament program secretly bought planes from Italy and Germany. Great efforts were made to stockpile equipment from the Great War, and the Hungarian government promoted the development of commercial aviation—partly as a front for military flight operations. During the late 1930s, the Hungarian air force went from a secret branch of the army to an independent modernizing force in its own right. But this success came at a heavy cost: increasing German support brought a growing Nazi influence over the country. Hungary entered the Second World War on the side of the Axis in 1941, with its air force soon becoming little more than a Luftwaffe auxiliary force. Besieged by Allied bombings, the Hungarian air force ended the Second World War much as they had the First—salvaging aircraft parts from downed invaders and fighting until they no longer had airfields from which to operate.

America's War in Vietnam: A Short Narrative History

by Larry H. Addington

&“If you want to read one book about Vietnam, read this one.&” —New York Review of Books Drawing on years of experience teaching about the war, Larry H. Addington presents a short, narrative history of the origins, course, and outcome of America&’s military involvement in Vietnam. Not intended as a competitor to the many excellent comprehensive studies of the Vietnam Era, this book will prove a useful introduction and a concise reference to America&’s longest, most controversial war. Addington reviews the history of pre-colonial Vietnam, the impact of French imperialism and the Indochina War, and the Cold War origins of American involvement. He then details US policy after the 1954 Geneva Accords, its role in the establishment of South Vietnam, and the outbreak of a new war. Turning to America&’s deepening involvement, Addington examines the US strategies for waging air and ground war, the impact of the war at home, and the reasons for the failure of US policy under President Johnson. He studies the successes and failures of the policy of withdrawal under President Nixon and concludes with an overview of the war&’s aftermath and its legacy.

Yearning for the New Age: Laura Holloway-Langford and Late Victorian Spirituality (Religion in North America)

by Diane Sasson

This biography of an unconventional woman in late 19th Century America is a study of the search for individual autonomy and spiritual growth. Laura Holloway-Langford, a &“rebel girl&” from Tennessee, moved to New York City, where she supported her family as a journalist. She soon became famous as the author of Ladies of the White House, which secured her financial independence. Promoted to associate editor of the Brooklyn Daily Eagle, she gave readings and lectures and became involved in progressive women&’s causes, the temperance movement, and theosophy—even traveling to Europe to meet Madame Blavatsky, the movement&’s leader, and writing for the theosophist newspaper The Word. In the early 1870s, she began a correspondence with Eldress Anna White of the Mount Lebanon, New York, Shaker community, with whom she shared belief in pacifism, feminism, vegetarianism, and cremation. Attracted by the simplicity of Shaker life, she eventually bought a farm from the Canaan Shakers, where she lived and continued to write until her death in 1930. In tracing the life of this spiritual seeker, Diane Sasson underscores the significant role played by cultural mediators like Holloway-Langford in bringing new religious ideas to the American public and contributing to a growing interest in eastern religions and alternative approaches to health and spirituality that would alter the cultural landscape of the nation. &“[A] richly detailed biography . . . that will deepen historical understandings of New Age movements in America.&” —American Studies

by Daniel Dupre

&“A well-written, nicely comprehensive, and inclusive social history of Alabama before and immediately after statehood.&”—H-AmIndian Alabama endured warfare, slave trading, squatting, and speculating on its path to becoming America&’s twenty-second state, and Daniel S. Dupre brings its captivating frontier history to life in Alabama&’s Frontiers and the Rise of the Old South. Dupre&’s vivid narrative begins when Hernando de Soto first led hundreds of armed Europeans into the region during the fall of 1540. Although this early invasion was defeated, Spain, France, and England would each vie for control over the area&’s natural resources, struggling to conquer it with the same intensity and ferocity that the Native Americans showed in defending their homeland. Although early frontiersmen and Native Americans eventually established an uneasy truce, the region spiraled back into war in the nineteenth century, as the newly formed American nation demanded more and more land for settlers. Dupre captures the riveting saga of the forgotten struggles and savagery in Alabama&’s—and America&’s—frontier days. &“An introduction to the interaction of European powers, the United States, and Indian tribes in Alabama and the Southeast.&”—Western Historical Quarterly

Dial-A-Ride Problems in Transportation Service (Lecture Notes in Economics and Mathematical Systems #694)

by Jonathan Grimm

Although the dial-a-ride problem currently plays a crucial role in providing transportation services to specific demographics such as the elderly, those with serious illnesses, or individuals with limited mobility due to disabilities, its potential impact on the overall mobility of the population remains underexplored. Surprisingly, the focus is often narrow, leaving potentials untapped and negatively impacting service providers’ profitability. This book proposes several solutions, including strategies for increasing revenue, offering supplementary services, and fostering collaboration. Further, it presents ideas and approaches that address the corresponding problems using operations research methods. The proposals presented here can be used not only to enhance the economic viability of dial-a-ride systems but also boost their impact and visibility. As such, the book shares fundamental insights into solving the dial-a-ride problem and anticipates future trends, leading the way to new frontiers of research. The book offers a valuable resource for academics and professionals engaged in the field of transportation or those interested in the design and development of advanced mathematical programming techniques.

Solidarity and Rule of Law: The New Dimension of EU Security (European Union and its Neighbours in a Globalized World #9)

by Teresa Russo Anna Oriolo Gaspare Dalia

This book offers an authentic and original perspective on the principles of solidarity and rule of law that are variously interconnected and increasingly invoked in international relations and affairs, especially in the context of the European Union, where they are among the founding values common to all Member States. The innovative approach the authors adopt consists in the joint reading of these two principles within the broader framework of EU security, thus offering a new interpretation and fertile ground for further research.Divided into four parts, the authors consider EU security to be linked to the implementation of both these principles, particularly with regard to EU stabilization and enlargement to the Western Balkans, cross-border security, migration and asylum management, criminal justice and human rights, and police and judicial cooperationThe contributions of eminent scholars, international experts, and practitioners are the book’s greatest strength. In addition, it offers a valuable new perspective on the study of contemporary issues affecting the Western Balkans, but also all Member States and the Union itself. Therefore, the book is an essential resource for students and scholars of EU law, but also for lawyers and professionals involved in criminal proceedings or working in the field of human rights.

Precarious Workers in the Gig Economy: Neoliberalism and its Discontents in Indonesia (Contestations in Contemporary Southeast Asia)

by Diatyka Widya Permata Yasih

This book focuses on gig work and organising among gig workers in the Indonesian online transport service, situated within the context of widespread precaritisation and digitalisation in today’s world of work. It addresses the challenges experienced by precarious gig workers in Indonesia in articulating their struggles through the discourse of precarity. Such challenges are related to the reproduction of neoliberal-derived entrepreneurial aspirations amidst the historical relative absence of stable work patterns (previously associated with more advanced economies), and the historically rooted marginalisation of broad-based labour movements as a social force. Though showcasing the specific experiences of Indonesian workers, the analysis in this book is supplemented by broad comparative insights. It offers empirically based analysis for those interested in new forms of collective organisations and politics that emerge among workers under the imperatives of neoliberalism in Indonesia, and by extension Southeast Asia.

Welcome to Everytown: A Journey into the English Mind

by Julian Baggini

This study of an ordinary town in Northern England is &“a thoughtful, sympathetic portrait of white working-class life…essential reading&” (Guardian). What do the English think? Every country has a dominant set of beliefs and attitudes concerning everything from how to live a good life, how we should organize society, and the roles of the sexes. Yet despite many attempts to define England&’s national character, what might be called the nation's philosophy has remained largely unexamined until now. Philosopher Julian Baggini pinpointed postcode S66 on the outskirts of Rotherham as England in microcosm—an area that reflected most accurately the full range of the nation's inhabitants, its most typical mix of urban and rural, old and young, married and single. He then spent six months living there, immersing himself in this typical English Everytown, in order to get to know the mind of a people. It sees the world as full of patterns and order, a view manifest in its enjoyment of gambling. It has a functional, puritanical streak, evident in its notoriously bad cuisine. In the English mind, men should be men and women should be women (but it's not sure what children should be). Sympathetic but critical, serious yet witty, Baggini's account of the English as represented by this particular spot on its map is both a portrait of its people and a personal story about being an alien in your own land. &“Baggini turns out to be a sensitive observer who takes people and places on their own terms. He is also good at examining his own prejudices and fears.&”—Independent &“An insightful and often amusing investigation of what it means to be English.&”—London Review of Books
