Sport and Video Games (Frontiers of Sport)
by Łukasz MuniowskiThis book explores the complex relationships between sport and video games, two of the largest entertainment sectors globally.Focusing on those games that depict real-life sports and athletic competitions, from FIFA, Madden, and NBA 2K to Football Manager and Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater, the book examines how sport has influenced gaming, and vice versa, and how this relationship is likely to develop in the future. Arguing that sports games are a unique interface between virtual worlds and our real-life social worlds, the book examines the concept of simulation; how the performance of athletes and teams in the real world influences video games; and whether those close links enhance or limit the player’s experience. It also considers how video games are used by leagues and sports franchises, through sponsorship and in-game advertisements, to reinforce their brands. Furthermore, it presents a concise history of sports video games, and using narrative methods, it takes a close look at the importance of storytelling in sports video games, not only in the sense of the stories built into the structure of a game but also in the way that fans and media organizations build their own stories in sport, in both real and virtual worlds. The book also asks how sports video games illuminate our understanding of key social issues, including race and gender. This is fascinating reading for anybody with an interest in the sociology or culture of sport or video games, sport business, or the gaming industry.

The Co-creative University: Evaluation, Expectations and Economic Policy Implications (Routledge Studies in the Economics of Innovation)
by Łukasz MamicaThe co-creative university has become the main driver of social and economic development stimulating internal (students and academics) and external creativity (companies and institutional environment) as well as cooperation in various areas (e.g. applied graduation theses, research projects, lifelong learning). Intended as a contribution to a better understanding of how universities create value in numerous areas, this book discusses the determinants of creativity and ways of stimulating it with a special focus on approaches and practical solutions relevant to teaching. Examples include problem-oriented student theses, which represent a successful combination of creativity with practical knowledge. Based on the findings of international surveys of students, the author offers an in-depth analysis of the differences between what they expect from universities and the degree to which their expectations are met. Comparing students’ opinions with those of employees of international corporations (working graduates) permitted the author to test the actual utility of selected aspects of university education. Regrettably, both groups of respondents gave low ratings to support for developing creativity, which should serve as a warning sign and inform future reforms at this level of education. This book is primarily targeted to those involved in education, policy-making, and socio-economic development. It provides a rich source of information for university managers on how to better fulfil their missions based on the idea of co-creativity. It also suggests how to improve the effectiveness of research and education in order to ensure that both can better respond to current development challenges.
Synchronous Generators and Excitation Systems Operating in a Power System: Measurement Methods and Modeling (Lecture Notes in Electrical Engineering #631)
by Stefan Paszek Andrzej Boboń Sebastian Berhausen Łukasz Majka Adrian Nocoń Piotr PruskiIn simulation tests of dynamic states of the power system (PS), the database of parameters of mathematical models of generating units is most commonly used. In many cases, the parameter values are burdened with large errors. Consequently, the results obtained are not reliable and do not allow drawing true conclusions. This monograph presents the developed methods and tools supporting the process of measurement determination of reliable values of parameters of mathematical models of synchronous generators and excitation systems. Special measurement tests are the basis for determining the parameters. The tests can be carried out in conditions of normal operation of generating units, in which electrical machines operate in the state of saturation of magnetic cores, and voltage regulators can reach limits. This book is intended for specialists in power engineering as well as students of faculties of electrical engineering interested in issues of PS transient states.

Sustainable Agriculture Policies for Human Well-Being: Integrated Efficiency Approach (Human Well-Being Research and Policy Making)
by Bazyli Czyżewski Łukasz KryszakThis book deals with the important topic of policies for sustainable agriculture, since food insecurity is a growing concern for policy makers and will affect the quality of life and well-being of generations to come. The authors provide a theoretical background to the concept of sustainable agriculture including its recent developments; monitor the current state of sustainability in agriculture in different regions of the world; and evaluate current agricultural policies to propose new solutions. They show practical ways of sustainability measurement that could be applied to different regions. The book takes into account sustainability indicators based on economic, social and environmental aspects and discusses the trade-offs between these three dimensions. It also answers the question of whether current agricultural policies contribute to balancing between the goals of agriculture---that of not just providing food but of contributing to the greater good---and how policies differ and have evolved across the world. Finally, it puts together the best practices of sustainability for the use of policymakers. The book pays particular attention to least developed countries where hunger and malnutrition are high, but where productivity should not come at the expense of environmental and social goals. This book is of use to a wide readership of policy makers, professionals and academics in the social and environmental sciences interested in the improvement of human life through sustainable agricultural policy implementation.

Health Insurance in the United States of America: Austrian Perspectives on Interventionism before ObamaCare (Routledge Focus on Economics and Finance)
by Łukasz JasińskiThe U.S. health care system is dominated by private and public (governmental) insurance which makes it difficult for many Americans to imagine access to health care without it. The health care system in the USA is sometimes mistakenly referred to as market-based, partly because of the previous lack of compulsory insurance. As this book shows, however, even before ObamaCare it was a system heavily influenced by the government. This short and accessible book demonstrates that governmental long-term interventionism in the American health insurance market has led to many contemporary serious problems, such as significant and uncontrolled increases in health care costs, rising health insurance prices, marginalization of direct payments, limited competition, and problems with uninsured Americans. Many observers wrongly blame the market for this state of affairs and demand more regulation, which further deteriorates the situation. The study is divided into two parts: an analysis of the history of interventions (and their effects) in the private health insurance market, and an analysis of the genesis and evolution of governmental Medicare and Medicaid insurance. Thus, the book constitutes a unique synthesis of Austrian theory of interventionism and the history of health insurance in the USA.This book is vital reading for health economists, managers, and policymakers, as well as those interested in the Austrian approach to economics.
Markets vs Public Health Systems: Perspectives from the Austrian School of Economics (Routledge Focus on Economics and Finance)
by Łukasz JasińskiProblems related to the functioning of public healthcare systems encourage the search for alternative solutions, for example to ensure improved access to medical services. However, these proposals also require appropriate theoretical support to better present and apply them. This book draws on Austrian Economics to provide a theoretical framework to support greater involvement of the private sector to improve inefficiencies in public healthcare. The Austrian School of Economics has a solid theoretical output describing and explaining the functioning of many aspects of the market economy (e.g. money, prices, interest rate, or capital). This work applies those principles to a market-based healthcare system and its individual elements, including health insurance. The study in these chapters is divided into two parts. The first part contains the theoretical aspects of the functioning of a complete market system. Particular importance is placed on presenting health insurance as a market institution and exploring its role in the market system. This examination also includes an analysis of alternative forms of financing access to medical services, such as direct payments, medical savings accounts, medical subscriptions, and charity. Additionally, solid counterarguments are provided for so-called market failures: asymmetric information, public goods, and monopolies. The second part of the book explores the theoretical aspects of interventionism and the functioning of public systems, and aims to better highlight the sources of the associated problems. This work provides an important contribution to the literature on health economics, healthcare management and policy, and Austrian Economics more broadly. It is essential reading for health economists and those holding key public positions related to healthcare.
The Economics of ObamaCare (Routledge Focus on Economics and Finance)
by Łukasz JasińskiThe Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (commonly referred to as ObamaCare or PPACA), which was signed into US law in 2010, generated a lot of noise from both supporters and detractors. This book argues that the changes introduced by ObamaCare were, in the long history of government intervention in the US health system, generally not as new or novel as claimed. The scope of the changes introduced by ObamaCare is very wide and covers, among others: the health insurance industry, pharmaceuticals, employers, employees, or the uninsured. The structure of the book shows the individual causes, key assumptions, and impacts of the reform on individual elements or areas of the US health system. One of the most important aspects of the work is analysis of the phenomenon of the so-called ‘death spiral’. The changes introduced by ObamaCare reform make it possible to investigate the causes of this phenomenon on a country-wide scale and enable a broader analysis of its effects. The book will be of great interest to readers in the economics, management and policy of health and health care.
English Law, the Legal Profession, and Colonialism: Histories, Parallels, and Influences (Routledge Studies in Comparative Legal History)
by Cerian Griffiths Łukasz Jan KorporowiczModern legal history is increasingly interested in exploring the development of legal systems from novel and nuanced approaches. This edited collection harnesses the lesser-researched perspectives of the impact of global and imperial factors on the development of law. It is argued that to better understand these timely discussions, we must understand the process and significance of colonisation itself. The volume brings together experts in the field of law and history to explore the ways in which law and lawyers contributed to the expansion of the British Empire, and the ways in which the Empire influenced the Metropole. The book sheds new light on the role of the law and legal actors during the pivotal centuries that saw the establishment of the Empire. Exploring such topics as Atlantic relations, the impact of British jurists upon Indian law, and the development of the law settler colonies, this collection reveals some of the lesser-known intersections between law, history, and empire. The book will be of interest to students and researchers in legal history, comparative history, equity and trusts, contract law, the legal profession, slavery, and the British Empire.

Constitutionalization of Politics in Comparative Perspective (Routledge Research in Comparative Politics)
by Paweł Laidler Dariusz Stolicki Łukasz Jakubiak Jacek SokołowskiScholars from political science and law examine the latest research on the constitutionalization of politics in comparative perspective. The scope includes both inter- country and intra- country perspectives, institutional and systemic analyses, common and civil law systems, focusing on historical and contemporary case studies. There are chapters limited to a concrete legal and political system, analyzing the tools and processes guarding constitutionalization of politics in such countries as the United States, Germany, France, Italy, Poland, Finland, and Bulgaria, as well as studies offering comparative analysis of various institutions representing different countries and different legal and political systems. Taken together, this book uncovers a wide variety of legal and political cultures, systems of governments, and forms of territorial organization. Once uncovered, this approach makes it easier to determine repetitive patterns which may be observed in constitutional review and constitutional interpretation, or significant differences occurring in the models of constitutionalization of politics around the world.Constitutionalization of Politics in Comparative Perspective tackles important debates among academics interested in the theoretical and practical aspects of constitutions and constitutionalism and will appeal to social scientists, including sociologists, philosophers, security studies and international relations experts but also cultural studies scholars.
