Bollywood and the First Decade of Independence: Seven Directors in Search of a Nation (Routledge Contemporary South Asia Series)

by Devapriya Sanyal

This book focuses on the cinema of the 1950s in India and analyzes the work of seven filmmakers from mainstream Hindi cinema and how they responded to the independent Indian nation after 1947.The selection of key filmmakers instead of cinema in general shows individual trajectories within cinema. The book examines the change in preoccupations or representations in the work of a single filmmaker, followed by an interpretation about the meaning of those representations. The filmmakers were very prolific and their work was commercially successful. Each chapter studies five or six selected films of each filmmaker and also include some relevant biographical details. The book demonstrates that each filmmaker uses their own strategies to address independent India of the 1950s and how Hindu cinema interrogated the nation-state.A novel contribution to Indian cinema, especially Hindi cinema, during formative years of the 1950s, this book will be of interest to researchers in Film Studies, Gender Studies, Political Science, and History, as well as South Asian society and culture.

Bosnian Fluxes: Belonging, Caring, and Reckoning in a Post-Cold War Semiperiphery (Southeast European Studies)

by David Henig Jaroslav Klepal Ondřej Žíla

This volume offers unique conceptual and empirical insights into ordinary lives in the violent aftermath of the Cold War. Considering Bosnia and Herzegovina as a comprehensive coordinate of larger social, political, and economic fluxes, it demonstrates why the widely used tropes of stuckedness, immobility, and frozenness associated with post-Cold War semiperipheries need to be understood in the context of excessive upheavals that mobilise or suspend modes of belonging, care, and reckoning. Bringing together emerging and leading scholars from across the social sciences with long-term research experience in Bosnia and Herzegovina, along with scholars who have been documenting similar processes in other parts of the world, this volume develops new analytical heuristics and interventions into global post-Cold War studies. It will be of particular interest to researchers and students of Anthropology, Sociology, Human Geography, Contemporary History, and Area Studies along with those studying the history, politics, economy, and culture of semiperipheries.

Brazilian Civil Aviation Law (Maritime and Transport Law Library)

by Delphine Defossez Inez Lopes

Brazilian aviation law is often a mystery for people outside Brazil. Despite being based on German and Italian law, Brazilian law does not resemble any other legal system; for instance, it took nearly a decade and the Brazilian Federal Supreme Court to finally acknowledge that the Montreal Convention prevails over the national consumer code. This book introduces Brazilian aviation law to professionals by laying out and discussing the applicable laws and competent authorities on essential elements of civil aviation to help professionals navigate this system.Brazilian aviation law has been through a process of major transformation, the latest occurring in December 2021 with the view to change half of the current Brazilian aeronautical code. Until 2005, the aviation sector was mainly regulated by the Aviation Civil Department (DAC), which was a department directly subordinated to the Ministry of Aeronautics and mainly comprised of military personnel. Although Brazilian aviation has been demilitarised through the creation of the National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC) by the Federal Law No. 11.182 of 2005, its military past still influences the current regime and air traffic control remains part of the Ministry of Defence. Understanding the various agencies in charge of civil aviation and laws governing important aspects of this area is essential; consequently, this book discusses the laws applicable to competition, consumers, airport and aircraft operation, safety and accident investigations, and environmental concerns.Written in a format to meet the needs of lawyers, academics, and aviation professionals, the book explains the key concepts and laws applicable to aviation in Brazil. Each chapter explores an essential area of aviation law to present readers with an insider’s understanding of the whole system to facilitate business relations with Brazil.

Britain, Détente, and the Helsinki CSCE: 'Fathers of the Final Act’ (Cold War History)

by Kai Hebel

This book offers the first in-depth account of the United Kingdom’s contribution to the rapprochement between East and West that culminated in the successful negotiation of the Helsinki Final Act of 1975.Britain’s role in this historic achievement has been understudied and understated. This book rectifies this shortcoming by tracing London’s important contribution to East-West diplomacy with a special focus on the negotiations of the Helsinki Final Act (1972–75). The Final Act was the product of almost three years of intense bargaining in the context of the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe. Along with 34 other states, the UK negotiated core aspects of European international relations, including the political, territorial, and normative order of the divided continent. Taking full advantage of its new role as a member of the European Community and its traditional part in NATO, British negotiators skillfully navigated the opportunities and pitfalls of multilateral diplomacy. Their success in hammering out several of the most contested and most innovative provisions of the Helsinki Accord earned them the moniker of ‘Fathers of the Final Act’. Based on extensive archival research in eleven countries on three continents, this book traces the evolution of the negotiations, providing a compelling bottom-up account of how diplomacy works in practice against the backdrop of inter-state conflict and unequal power. This book will be of much interest to students of Cold War History, European history, British history, and International Relations.

Brunei and the British in the Nineteenth Century: Of a Seer-poet, an Adventurer, and the Near Extinction of an Ancient Malay Sultanate (Routledge Studies in the Modern History of Asia)

by Ooi Keat Gin

Brunei and the British in the Nineteenth Century relates the remarkable tale of the encounter between the Sultanate of Brunei, that in 1800 possessed nominal hegemony over most of northern Borneo, and Western colonialists, particularly the British. The study focuses on two notable protagonists: Pengiran Indera Mahkota (c. 1790s–1858), a high-born Bruneian courtier, and James Brooke (1803–1868), a former English soldier and gentleman-adventurer. Pengiran Indera Mahkota was governor (rajah) of Sarawak, then a small area of Brunei. He penned his cautionary words and counsel in a popular verse form titled, Syair Rakis, which he presented to the throne in 1847. James Brooke successfully detached Sarawak from Brunei, establishing his own dynastic “raj”, ruling as the “White Rajah” of Sarawak from 1841 until his passing to be succeeded by his younger nephew, as Rajah Charles Brooke. In this book, textual analysis together with archival research present a mapping of verse (poem) and fact (history) that reveal a confluence of the two that was compatible. It shows the veracity of the forewarnings and intuitive hunches in the Syair Rakis that uncannily reflected historical developments. Although Pengiran Indera Mahkota’s counsel was not acted upon, and the outcome for Brunei was unfavourable, the book argues that Pengiran Indera Mahkota was a significant figure, whose prominent and pivotal role deserves greater recognition. This book will be of interest to historians and scholars of Southeast Asian history, Imperial and Colonial history and Malay literature.
