Voice of Nonconformity: William Robertson Nicoll and The British Weekly
by Keith A IvesA study of William Robertson Nicoll, a non-conformist individual who had considerable influence in the late 19th Century. Originally a minister, he was considered a great leader and was also a theological conservative, and therefore committed to maintaining the orthodox stance of the Christian Churches, but at the same time, he encouraged many of the new ideas, which he felt would prove a useful and hopeful benefit for the Church. Due to health issues he was later forced to retire his position and focused on work as an editor and journalist, bringing with him the same sense of leadership he had previously been known for. The debate over his legacy continues and is addressed within this study using previously unstudied information on Nicoll's life.

Peter Pan, the Lost Child
by Kathleen Kelley-LaineOriginally published in 1992 in French as Peter Pan ou l'Enfant Triste, the book was translated into English in 1997 and released as Peter Pan: The Story of Lost Childhood. This new English language version is translated by author Kathleen Kelley-Laine and enriched with the addition of an epilogue from the author plus a new foreword from renowned psychoanalyst Jonathan Sklar. Peter Pan, "young innocent and heartless", with his baby tooth smile is one of the most popular heroes of fiction of both children and adults for over one hundred years. The author explores this mythical figure, both as a story as well as a metaphor, revealing the hidden traumas and psychological conundrums of this "Lost Child". The evocative and lyrical style takes the reader through multiple levels of understanding of this seemingly simple "fairy tale", into the tragic story of its author J. M. Barrie and of other Peter Pans who never grow up. In Peter Pan, the Lost Child, psychoanalyst Kathleen Kelley-Laine explores Peter Pan's light-hearted escapades and uncovers a sad, lost child behind the 'baby tooth' smile. She uses the story as a framework for the stories of her patients to show how their own Peter Pan manifests, giving a unique insight into how childhood events can block growth into adulthood. She also investigates the sinister side of author James Mathew Barrie as it relates to his Peter Pan tale, and addresses her own family history and its links to The Boy Who Would Not Grow Up. Little by little, as the book progresses, Kelley-Laine's lost childhood emerges as a child who fled with her family from war-torn Hungary after the Second World War to the 'promised land' of Canada. These three interwoven storylines take the reader on a literary journey to uncover secrets and hidden emotions. Kelley-Laine makes clear that the child who cannot grow up, the Peter Pan raging inside the adult, needs to be heard and understood. Only then can that lost child have a chance to find the road to maturity.

Telling The Truth: The Therapist's Dilemma
by Rob HillHonesty is important in any relationship but within psychotherapy, honesty takes on a different dimension. The impact of speaking the truth has many repercussions to the therapeutic relationship and may harm the perception of the therapist in the eyes of the client or the relationship in its entirety. Thus, what are the limits of what a therapist can therapeutically share with a client? What are the implications of the therapist choosing to conceal what they congruently experience? Have therapists in the past been more able and more willing to tell the truth with their clients? Rob Hill engages with these and many more questions, which lead into related territories - those of shame, power, love and hate, narcissism, intersubjectivity and madness - and invites the reader to consider them from a fresh perspective. Presented in essay form interspersed with 'stories' which focus on Hill's inner reactions to working with various clients, the book seeks to evoke curiosity and contemplation rather than definitive answers. Using language that is personalised and 'immediate' rather than academic and abstract, Hill hopes to engage all therapists, including those who rarely read academic and research literature. Telling the Truth is an enjoyable, thought-provoking, and accessible read that raises many important ideas. Rob Hill's own honesty, insight, and openness in addressing this important topic makes this essential reading for practising therapists.
Studies in Extended Metapsychology: Clinical Applications of Bion's Ideas
by Donald MeltzerThe work of Wilfred Bion, by its very nature being a major step forward in the psychoanalytical model making of the mental apparatus, will undoubtably require many years for its full assimilation into the thought and practice of workers in the field. To assist this process of assimilation two types of exposition are required: to help students read Bion's work in a comprehending way; and to show the way to the clinical application of this revolutionary modification of the working mosel of the mind.

Holy Beauty: Prolegomena to an Orthodox Philokalic Aesthetics
by Chrysostomos A. StamoulisThe philosophical and theological study of aesthetics has a long and rich history, stretching back to Platos identification of ultimate goodness and beauty, together representing the eternal form. Recent trends in aesthetic theory, however, characterised by a focus on the beautiful at the expense of the good, have made it an object of suspicion in the Orthodox Church. In its place, Greek theologians have sought to emphasise philokalia as a truer theological discipline. Seeking to reverse this trend, Chrysostomos Stamoulis brings into conversation a plethora of voices, from Church fathers to contemporary poets, and from a Marxist political theorist to a literary critic. Out of this dialogue, Stamoulis builds a model for the re-appropriation of Orthodoxys patristic and Byzantine past that is no longer defined in antithesis to the Western present. The openness he proposes allows us to perceive afresh the world shot through with divinity, if only we can lift our gaze to see it. Dismantling the false dichotomy, philokalia or aesthetics, is the first step.
The World Turned Upside Down: Finding the Gospel in Stranger Things
by Michael S. HeiserWhat could the supernatural world of Stranger Things have in common with the Bible? The paranormal television series Stranger Things taps into the mysterious elements that have fueled spiritual questions for millennia. The otherworldly manifestations in Hawkins, Indiana offer compelling portrayals of important spiritual truths--and many of these truths are echoed in the supernatural worldview of the Bible. For Michael Heiser, Stranger Things is the perfect marriage of his interest in popular culture and the paranormal. In The Unseen Realm, he opened the eyes of thousands, helping readers understand the supernatural worldview of the Bible. Now he turns his attention to the worldwide television phenomenon, exploring how Stranger Things relates to Christian theology and the Christian life. In The World Turned Upside Down, Heiser draws on this supernatural worldview to help us think about the story of Jesus and discover glimpses of the gospel in the Upside Down. He argues that this celebrated series helps us understand the gospel in unique and overlooked ways. The spiritual questions and crises raised by Stranger Things are addressed the same way they are in the gospel, with mystery and transcendent power.

A Rational Faith: An Introduction to the Philosophy of Richard Swinburne
by Joshua SijuwadeA comprehensive analysis of Richard Swinburne's intellectual journey and philosophical work, A Rational Faith explores the legacy of one of the most influential and rigorous philosophical defenders of theism. Across Swinburne's written career, he has displayed a deep commitment to demonstrating the intellectual credibility of the Christian faith, facing modern scientific and philosophical challenges and the materialistic worldview of modern intellectualism. Analysing his life and work through in-depth, accessible explanations of key issues and their context, Joshua Sijuwade brings together collected criticism of Swinburne's work and explores possible counter-arguments, alongside a foreword by Richard Swinburne himself. Suitable for any reader interested in Swinburne's 'philosophy-first' approach, or those intrigued by a philosophical defence of the Christian faith, A Rational Faith reveals Swinburne's life and work as a witness to his belief that belief in the central tenets of the Christian faith is rational.

Thinking Things Through: Essays in Philosophy and Christian Faith
by Andrew Murray SmThe life of a philosopher is foremost the life of thinking but it is also the life of imagination that dreams of and investigates possibilities that might not otherwise have been raised. The life of a Christian is the life of Faith, Hope and Charity, and so it both looks to things beyond this world and regards this world with compassion. The two can work together. Faith softens reason, and reason sharpens Faith. Imagination finds new ways to articuate in concrete circumstances what has belonged to long traditions of thought. These essays cover a wide range of topics either by way of simple reflection on life or in response to issues that arose around the time of their writing. The period of their writing was a varied one. Life looked so stable in the mid-nineties that we contemplated Australia becoming a republic and sought Aboriginal reconciliation. It remained uncomplicated at the time of the Olympic Games in 2000 but became troubled by political events and by the terrorist attacks of 2001. The essays respond to the issues of this time. Four essays not published in the Weekly have been added to take note of more recent changes that have taken place in the Church and in our world.

Jesus and the Cross: Necessity, Meaning, and Atonement
by Peter LaughlinAccording to the Nicene Creed, Christ died for us and for our salvation. But while all Christians agree that Christ's death and resurrection has saving significance, there is little unanimity in how and why that is the case. In fact, Christian history islittered with accounts of the redemptive value of Christ's death, and new models and motifs are constantly being proposed, many of which now stand in stark contrast to earlier thought. How then should contemporary articulations of the importance of the death of Christ be judged? At the heart of this book is the contention that Christian reflection on the atonement is faithful inasmuch as it incorporates the intention that Jesus himself had for his death. In a wide-reaching study, the author draws from both classical scholarship and recent work on the historical Jesus to argue that not only did Jesus imbue his death with redemptive meaning but that such meaning should impact expressions of the saving significance of the cross.
The Promised Davidic King: Psalm 108's Canonical Placement and Use of Earlier Psalms (Studies in Scripture and Biblical Theology)
by Wyatt Aaron GrahamReading psalms in context The Psalter is a carefully edited work, skillfully arranged to communicate a theological message. The Promised Davidic King is a case study of how a single psalm shapes—and is shaped by—its context in the Psalter. Wyatt Aaron Graham argues that Psalm 108 plays a guiding role in Book V (Pss 107–150). Following Israel's return from exile in Psalm 107, Psalm 108 introduces the eschatological King and kingdom further developed in Psalms 109–110. Psalm 108 repurposes Psalms 57 and 60, which in this location, take on renewed meaning in the Psalter's unfolding story of redemption. Graham's study of Psalm 108 gives insight into the meaning of the Psalms and displays the benefits of reading psalms in their context.

Artist about Cambridge
by Jon HarrisJon Harris has lived, breathed and drawn Cambridge for over 50 years. His architect's sense of structure and fabric, his draughtsman's eye and vigorous use of pen and brush have produced an outstanding body of work. In 1997 the Fitzwilliam Museum honoured him with an exhibition of some 90 paintings and drawings. A great many of his best works are published for the fi rst time in Artist about Cambridge. They include drawings from the more than 40 sketchbooks which have been his constant companions over the past half century. Jon Harris's text describes in compelling detail how the images came into being. Harris's work is not a depiction of Cambridge as the tourist might like to have it, but is rather about his fascination with unregarded vistas, its back streets, crucial buildings lost to the wrecking ball, and with the city's industrial past. The artist's unrivalled knowledge and understanding of Cambridge and its environs inform every painting and drawing, helping you enjoy a thousand things you might otherwise miss.
Colossians and Philemon: A New Covenant Commentary (NCCS)
by Michael F BirdMichael Bird's commentary on Colossians and Philemon in the New Covenant Commentary Series pays close attention to the socio-historical context, the flow and dynamics of the text, their argumentative strategy, theological message, and the meaning ofColossians and Philemon for the contemporary church today. Bird situates Colossians in the context of Paul's Ephesian ministry and describes how Paul attempts to persuade a congregation in the Lycus Valley to remain firm in the gospel and to grasp the cosmic majesty of Jesus Christ over and against the views of certain Jewish mystics who have thrown the Colossians into confusion. He shows how, in the letter to Philemon, Paul intercedes for a slave estranged from his master through a carefully crafted feat of pastoral persuasion from a missionary friend of Philemon. The commentary combines exegetical insight, rhetorical analysis, theological exposition, and practical application all in one short volume. Bird shows Paul at work as a theologian, pastor, and missionary in his letters to the Colossians and Philemon.
