How to Kill a City: Gentrification, Inequality, and the Fight for the Neighborhood

by PE Moskowitz

&“An exacting look at gentrification&” (New York Times Book Review)—and the lives devastated in the process The term gentrification has become a buzzword to describe the changes in urban neighborhoods across the country, but we don&’t realize just how threatening it is. It means more than the arrival of trendy shops, much-maligned hipsters, and expensive lattes. The very future of American cities as vibrant, equitable spaces hangs in the balance. P. E. Moskowitz&’s How to Kill a City takes readers from the kitchen tables of hurting families who can no longer afford their homes to the corporate boardrooms and political backrooms where destructive housing policies are devised. Along the way, Moskowitz uncovers the massive, systemic forces behind gentrification in New Orleans, Detroit, San Francisco, and New York. In the new preface, Moskowitz stresses just how little has changed in those same cities and how the problems of gentrification are proliferating throughout America. The deceptively simple question of who can and cannot afford to pay the rent goes to the heart of America&’s crises of race and inequality. A vigorous, hard-hitting exposé, How to Kill a City reveals who holds power in our cities and how we can get it back.

Candace Pert: Genius, Greed, and Madness in the World of Science

by Pamela Ryckman

Candace Pert stood at the dawn of three revolutions: the opioid crisis, the AIDS crisis, and the mind-body movement. Indeed, her visionary work shaped history – for good and, inadvertently, for evil. Before there was Bessel van der Kolk, there was Candace Pert, the Mother of the Mind-Body Revolution. Her story forms a launchpad to discuss the most pressing issues plaguing science and healthcare today. Pert played pivotal roles in major movements in both science and politics. Namely, she: Discovered the opiate receptor (the mechanism by which opioids function in the brain), launching the opioid crisis. Proved the mind-body link, launching the field of integrative or functional medicine. Created Peptide T, the underground AIDS drug featured in the film Dallas Buyers Club, and then went rogue, becoming a linchpin in the black market for her drug. Pert was sabotaged by mentors and colleagues keen to profit from her brilliance. But she too became tainted, believing that her noble ends would justify devious means. Like a mythic hero, she succumbed to a fatal flaw, and her greatest strengths—singularity of purpose and blind faith in her own virtuosity—would prove to be her undoing. CANDACE PERT is a great read for anyone interested in integrative health, mind-body awareness, medical ethics, the bureaucracy of a toxic healthcare system, and a flawed genius whose scandals and breakthroughs shaped history. &“Exemplary research, balanced accounts and deeply evocative prose... a truly insightful narrative on what it can mean to be a woman at the cutting edge of science.&” – The Wall Street Journal &“Riveting biography… nuanced portrait…Readers will be engrossed.&” – Publisher's Weekly &“There is a revolution taking form that is significantly influencing how the Western medical community views health and disease. Candace Pert&’s contribution to this revolution is undeniable.&” – Deepak Chopra &“Ryckman&’s writing is life-like, suspenseful, and creates a roller coaster ride of stakes and unexpected discovery&” – Dr. Lisa Miller, New York Times bestselling author of The Spiritual Child and The Awakened Brain

You can't say yes--it would be too awkward--and you can't say no--it would look like defeat. On your desk are a series of invitations to half-baked literary events around the world.QUESTION: How do you arrange to skip town?ANSWER: You accept them all. What would possibly go wrong? Arthur Less will almost fall in love in Paris, almost fall to his death in Berlin, barely escape to a Moroccan ski chalet from a Saharan sandstorm, accidentally book himself as the (only) writer-in-residence at a Christian Retreat Center in Southern India, and encounter, on a desert island in the Arabian Sea, the last person on Earth he wants to face. Bridging the Digital Divide in the US: Planning Innovative State and Local Approaches (Community Development Research and Practice Series)

by Mildred E. Warner Natassia A. Bravo Duxixi Shen

The US faces a deep digital divide which cuts across both urban and rural lines, but is most marked in rural, low income, and minority communities. This book presents a multi-level governance framework which explores how local leaders use policy opportunity and community resilience to address inequity in broadband infrastructure. Cases from communities across the US are profiled to show how local and regional initiatives address the digital divide – how they harness local resources, state and federal funding, and how they navigate regulatory restrictions and financial constraints. Special attention is given to rural and Indigenous communities, where the technological, organizational, and funding challenges are greatest. The federal policy landscape for broadband is changing, and this book provides clear insights on how policy can support the people and places left behind. This book is essential for planners and those studying or working in rural development, rural studies, and community development. The Open Access version of this book, available at www.taylorfrancis.com, has been made available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial (CC-BY-NC) 4.0 license.

The Role of Food in Resettlement and Rehabilitation: Good Food and Good Lives (Routledge Frontiers of Criminal Justice)

by Julie Parsons and Kevin Wong

Exploring the role of food in enabling people with convictions to live a “good life”, this book examines the tangible ways in which growing food, cooking, and eating together has the potential to be both transformative and small steps incremental in facilitating desistance journeys for people with convictions. At its most reductive, food sustains us physically; it’s the fuel which keeps us alive. Of course, emotionally, culturally, and socially it does more than that. This edited book addresses an under-researched area of resettlement and rehabilitation which has real-world application to policy and practice in criminal justice and related areas such as mental health, physical health, employment, and education. Importantly, given the relatability of food growing, cooking, and eating to the wider public, it offers opportunities to connect the desistance journeys and lives of people with convictions to the wider public. The Role of Food in Resettlement and Rehabilitation will be of great interest to students and scholars of criminology, sociology, social work, and food studies. It is also important reading for government policymakers in criminal justice and health care, social policy, and criminal justice practitioners, including prison governors, social workers, and providers of services for people with convictions in custody and community.

What Is the Point of Moral Philosophy? (Routledge Studies in Ethics and Moral Theory)

by Roger Crisp Ingmar Persson Julian Savulescu

Over the last half-century, moral philosophy has taken an applied turn, covering practical issues in areas such as medicine, business, the environment, and many others. But it has largely failed to examine itself. In this volume, a range of distinguished contemporary ethicists, representing many different positions, examine what might be the point, if any, of moral philosophy.Given the deep and apparently intransigent basic disagreements between philosophers, is the discipline able to provide genuinely helpful advice? Is there an agreed methodology for philosophical ethics? Is the truth about ethics such that few people could believe it (perhaps because the truth is so peculiar) or act upon it (because it turns out that ethics is much more demanding than most think)? Perhaps the only philosopher to have addressed these issues head-on has been Ingmar Persson. His important arguments provide a starting point for debate and are examined and discussed by several contributors. But the volume goes beyond Persson’s path-breaking work to clarify the nature of the challenges to philosophical ethics and the variety of responses available. What Is the Point of Moral Philosophy? will be of interest to scholars and students working in all areas of moral philosophy, including applied ethics, metaethics, and normative ethics.

Psychiatrists' Analysis of Politicians' Mental Health: The Ethics of Public Commentary

by Keith Rasmussen

This book discusses the validity, ethics, and usefulness of professional public commentary of politician’s mental health and provides an alternative model for professionals to do so in an ethical manner.Rendering public opinions about politician’s mental health, particularly when the professional has not conducted a first-hand assessment of the individual, can be problematic and unethical. This book reviews the legitimate methods of psychiatric and psychological evaluations, abuses of psychiatry, and ethical perspectives on publicly voicing opinions regarding public figures, and proposes an alternative assumption model for mental health professionals to render a public opinion. It is a great resource for practicing psychologists and psychiatrists to reflect on their own processes when examining the mental health of politicians.Students and trainees in the mental health sector will come away from this book with a better understanding of the ethical concerns inherent in commenting publicly on public officials’ mental health, and they'll find valuable guidance on how to do so in an ethical way.

Foreign Direct Investment and International Law: Liberalization and Economic Sovereignty (Routledge Research in Finance and Banking Law)

by Adaeze Agatha Aniodoh

This book examines the regulatory framework for foreign direct investments, most notably the bilateral investment treaties which provide several guarantees that minimise the exposure of risks to foreign investors in a host State. Most States have recognised that one of the ways they can improve their economic growth is by providing effective mechanisms for the attraction of foreign investments. In this regard, foreign direct investments have become a key element in the strategic vision for advancing any national economy. The book examines guarantees which have the capacity to impinge on the economic sovereignty of a State, raising questions such as: are host States obliged to comply with the rights of foreign investors to free capital repatriation in the face of economic difficulties? What power does a host State have to regulate and impose capital controls that are deleterious to the rights of a foreign investor? This book argues that policies aimed at increasing foreign direct investment need to extend beyond investment liberalisation to strike a balance between the regulatory rights of a State and the legitimate expectations of foreign investors.Advancing the discussion on the necessity of balancing the needs of foreign investors with those of the host community and exploring the power asymmetry present in treaty negotiations, this book will be of interest to students, academics, and practitioners with an interest in international investment law.

The Last Tour: Paul and Eslanda Robeson's Visit to Australia and New Zealand in 1960

by Ann Curthoys

Paul Robeson was once the most famous African American in the world. Not only was he a renowned singer and actor with a stunning bass baritone voice, revered throughout the world, he was also a former professional athlete, lawyer and civil rights activist. To the delight of his many fans, he and his wife, Eslanda—a notable civil rights activist, author, United Nations journalist and anthropologist—were finally able to tour Australia and New Zealand. First mooted in the 1930s, it had been delayed by war and then the Cold War, when Paul&’s outspoken support for the Soviet Union and against his country&’s race relations had led the US government to deny him a passport until 1958. Now, in 1960, the tour occurred at a time when the world was at the tipping point between the Cold War 1950s and the turbulent 1960s. The Robesons&’ tour encompassed concerts—the first one ever at the Sydney Opera House, which was still under construction—talks to unionists, fans, women&’s organisations, communists, and peace activists. It involved active engagement with Indigenous peoples and their struggles in both countries. Through their engagement with a wide range of people we see life on the far Left, the emergence of new forms of Aboriginal and Maori protest, and the reception and influence of African American entertainers in Australia and New Zealand. By bringing Eslanda&’s work as a writer and journalist to the fore, historian Ann Curthoys sheds light on the intersections of race, gender and women&’s political activism. Based on extensive new documentary and oral history research, The Last Tour explores why Paul and Eslanda Robeson&’s trip was such a success and how it exerted a profound influence both at the time and over future generations. &‘No man I&’ve ever met has so impressed me with his personal greatness. He&’s so simple and unaffected in his manner, so dignified … it&’s the man himself, I think, who demonstrates the greatness of the human spirit.&’ Katharine Susannah Prichard on Paul Robeson

Shadows of Azadi: Women's Lives in the Crucible of Kashmir

by Manisha Sobhrajani

Azaadi, or &‘freedom&’, represents a woman&’s right to choose, and to live by the choices she makes. So what happens when you aren&’t allowed to choose? When your childhood, education, worklife and self-determined future are forbidden due to your gender? In the conflict-torn and highly militarised region of Kashmir, &‘Azaadi&’ can mean different things to different people. For one woman, it could mean expressing her innermost thoughts without the fear of punishment. For another, it could mean studying the subjects of her choice, or going out with friends without being harassed. It could also mean being able to wear make-up, or certain clothes; even to to read whatever one likes. This anthology of essays by women from the three main regions of Indian-administered-Kashmir—Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh—explores what Azaadi means in a country where basic rights for women are forbidden.

The Big Fix: Rebuilding Australia's National Security

by Albert Palazzo

The character of war is constantly changing, and so too must the approach to national security. But Australia&’s defence policy is broken. Successive governments have not approached the nation&’s security with the intelligence, resoluteness and seriousness it requires. After more than 120 years of defence policy centred on dependency, the geopolitical situation demands new thinking by politicians and policymakers to secure the nation for the future. In light of technological progress, the shifting balance of power in the Pacific and the worsening danger of climate change, Australia needs a new approach in order to charts its own course. In The Big Fix, defence strategist Albert Palazzo proposes a defence policy centred on the strategic defensive, which presents the best military fit for Australia, given its geography and the current state of military technology. Crucially, he elevates climate change to primacy in the national security hierarchy and explains how we cannot afford to ignore it as a security factor. And he asks: what is stopping Australia&’s leaders from seriously considering other options for the nation&’s security?

Principle of Architecture, Protocol, and Algorithms for CoG-MIN: A Sustainably Ecological & Evolutionary Solution for Packet Network System

by Hui Li He Bai

The Internet is the most important global infrastructure in the digital economy era. Its role has shifted from simple information exchange to support all kinds of novel scenarios and applications. Considering the diverse communication requirements, the development trend of the future network should support various addressing methods, such as IP address, identity, service, content, geographical location, and other potential communication modes. Therefore, a co-governed, secure, and evolvable novel network architecture is indispensable. This Open Access book focuses on Co-Governed Multi-Identifier Network (CoG-MIN), a promising future network architecture that provides an ecological solution for the sustainable evolution of packet networks. The design of CoG-MIN follows three main principles: blockchain-based global co-governed among top-level domains, endogenous network security, and sustainable evolution. CoG-MIN aims to promote peaceful, orderly, secure, and sustainable development for the global computer network. It will end the gridlock in which network systems need to be continuously upgraded due to the exponential scale expansion of addressing and routing on the current network layer. In other words, CoG-MIN enables a variety of networks to coexist and transition naturally. This will save countless establishment costs and take advantage of existing network equipment and devices. This book provides important reference materials about the mentioned topic for the research of computer network, network security, network communication, and other disciplines.

Models in Statics for Engineers

by Andreas Öchsner Marin Marin Sorin Vlase Maria Luminita Scutaru

This book covers all the standard introductory topics in classical mechanics, for the first part: Statics (the analysis of forces and moments acting on a mechanical system in equilibrium with its environment). Starting from Newton's laws, the necessary and sufficient conditions are formulated for a point/rigid/system to remain in equilibrium. The main problems that may arise in engineering practice are analyzed and numerous problems illustrate the presentation. It is well known that classical mechanics, viewed as a theoretical discipline, possesses an inherent beauty, depth and richness and presents coherence and elegance. This book tries to highlight this beauty and harmony that classical mechanics offers. The long experience of the authors means that the way of presentation is intensively tested in the decades of contact with students. The textbook is mainly addressed to advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate students who are interested in the engineering application of modern methods in classical mechanics. The authors try to use a clear and systematic style to promote a good understanding of the subject. For this part of mechanics, statics, the authors motivated and illustrated each concept, with worked examples. The book intends to provide a thorough coverage of the fundamental principles and techniques of classical mechanics. The text is based on the authors' many years of experience delivering lectures and seminars. Most of the problems are original and will be useful not only for those studying mechanics, but also for those who teach it.

Ratio Decidendi and Obiter Dictum: A Curious Case

by Daniel Mitidiero

This book explores the concepts of ratio decidendi and obiter dictum from a historical-comparative perspective. It provides a comprehensive review of legal doctrine on precedent, delving into English and American Law so to illustrate its applicability to the Brazilian legal system. How we deal with precedents is its main topic. Definitions within legal fields have always been subject to significant debate, with some recurring more often than others. Every now and then, a perspective arises which transforms the orthodoxy. As such is the case with the notion of precedent. Outlining its contours establishes a continuity between disparate and temporally distinct traditions. It requires theoretical-philosophical speculation, historical-comparative sense, and attention to the particularities of Brazilian Law. This book includes in-depth discussions of the development of the various understandings of the ratio, outlines the notions of ratio decidendi and obiter dictum, and illustrates its application within legal practice. It suggests an understating of the ratio capable of dealing with identical, similar and distinct issues in the Brazilian legal system. Following an extensive debate on the characterisation of the ratio, it explores the notion of obiter dictum, its definition, abilities and effects. The target audience of this book includes researchers, scholars and practitioners, especially those interested in the practice of precedent from a perspective that intertwines legal theory, legal history and comparative law.
