Think Like a Stoic: The Ancient Path to a Life Well Lived

by Ken Mogi

In a world overflowing with abundance and information, the calm and clarity of stoicism has never been more necessary. In this new book, bestselling author Ken Mogi explores the ancient Greek philosophy as well as its resonance with other cultures around the world, not least his own Japanese perspective. The result is a new version of stoicism that is practical, global, future-proof and, above all, optimistic. With his expertise as a neuroscientist, Mogi uncovers the cognitive foundations of the resilience that is so central to stoicism. Rooted in science, he finds in stoicism robust coping strategies for the challenges of modern life, and ways to balance self-discipline with enjoying life's pleasures. But stoicism is also a mindset that uniquely equips us to handle the future, from global challenges such as the climate emergency to the rise and rise of AI. Thinking like a stoic, he argues, can offer us not just a path for personal growth and wisdom, but the key to the future of humanity.

The Celtic Golden Dawn: An Original & Complete Curriculum of Druidical Study

by John Michael Greer

A century ago, Celtic groups descending from the famed Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn pioneered a fascinating form of ceremonial magic invoking Pagan Celtic powers instead of relying on the more commonly used Judeo-Christian names and symbols. Those groups disappeared many decades ago, and their teachings were lost. But today, their legacy has been reborn.Respected occult author and Grand Archdruid John Michael Greer has re-created a complete magical system based on the Celtic Golden Dawn traditions. This new book provides students with a complete curriculum of Druidical magic and occult wisdom, including training in ceremonial magic, meditation, pathworking, divination, geomancy, and herbal alchemy, allowing self-initiation into the three degrees of Ovate, Bard, and Druid. Structured to resemble a long-lost correspondence course, The Celtic Golden Dawn presents a series of knowledge lectures, meditations, and rituals leading to mastery of the most important magical techniques.

Naval Aviator: The Memoir of a Royal Navy Officer and Operational Westland Wasp and Lynx Pilot

by Chris Taylor

Chris Taylor has had a very successful career as a Royal Navy officer, helicopter pilot, test pilot and instructor. His first book, Test Pilot, concentrates on anecdotes and incidents from the most recent phase of his career. His second book, Experimental Test Pilot, is an account of his ten years’ service as an experimental test pilot, from 1994 until 2004, at MoD Boscombe Down, the UK’s tri-Service home of military aircraft testing and evaluation. Written in the same humorous manner as his previous books, Naval Aviator explains why Chris wanted to become a pilot and how he achieved that through the Royal Navy and Fleet Air Arm. Following the, perhaps misleading, advice of his local careers office, Chris joined the Royal Navy on a University Cadetship which required him to serve initially as a watchkeeping and navigation officer before he could sub-specialise as a Westland Wasp and subsequently a Westland Lynx pilot. This book covers each appointment or ship that Chris served in, and provides a ‘no holds barred’ account of the many life-threatening and stressful situations he faced, not least working with, and for, some unhelpful if not outright unreasonable colleagues. The operating environment of a small ship’s flight is graphically described, including flying in extremely poor weather conditions and high sea states in order to ‘get the job done’. His ditching of a Wasp during training and then damaging his helicopter at sea is fully documented. In addition to numerous close calls as an aviator, Chris is unusual in being involved in four major collisions at sea. For one of these collisions he was the officer responsible for conning or ‘driving’ the ship and, despite his best efforts, his ship rammed a German Frigate in thick fog in the Baltic. Serving on a Hong Kong Patrol boat he had numerous encounters with armed Chinese patrol boats and soldiers; as a Fishery Protection Officer he was attacked with an acetylene blow torch and kidnapped by a French trawler; as a Wasp pilot he almost singlehandedly had to protect the Royal Yacht from the threat of Libyan gunboats; as a Lynx pilot he won the day in numerous major international exercises around the world and served for a month on detachment to a Dutch frigate. All of these accidents, incidents and adventures are fully described set alongside the challenges of trying to maintain a normal domestic life. Naval Aviator accurately captures the ups and downs of life as a Royal Navy Officer and Fleet Air Arm pilot of the Cold War and will be a good read for anyone interested in naval or aviation history. It is also an ideal book for aviators, aspiring aviators, service veterans and anyone who is considering such a career.

The Divided Mind: A new way of thinking about mental health

by Professor Edward Bullmore

"A tour de force of science and history writing by one of our most important psychiatric leaders." John H. Krystal M.D., Professor of Psychiatry, Yale University"A riveting read - told through the eyes of one of the world's most accomplished and compassionate psychiatrists." Professor Karl J. Friston, Queen Square Institute of Neurology, University College London"Edward Bullmore has given us a profoundly important book for family members, students, and professionals interested in mental health and mental illness." Dr. Thomas R Insel, Former Director of U.S. National Institute of Mental Health"Perhaps if more politicians read this book and understood what goes wrong in the minds of people with schizophrenia, they might be more willing to devote sufficient resources to get people better." Sir Robin MacGregor Murray, Professor of Psychiatric Research at the Institute of Psychiatry, King's CollegeFor centuries, mental and physical health have been divided and disorders of the mind and body have been treated as if they were poles apart. This deep-rooted division has shaped medicine, psychiatry, and society. But what if this mind/body split is not only outdated - but dangerously misleading? In this groundbreaking follow-up to his bestselling The Inflamed Mind, psychiatrist and neuroscientist Edward Bullmore challenges one of medicine's most enduring assumptions.Through the lens of schizophrenia - perhaps the most misunderstood of all psychiatric disorders - Bullmore explores what he calls "the original schism" and the under-examined history of psychiatry itself.Taking readers on a gripping journey through the evolving science of schizophrenia, illuminated by his personal experiences as a researcher and clinician, Bullmore lifts the lid on psychiatry's dark past. He highlights how the horror of the Nazi eugenics programme magnified a split between brain and mind theories which persists to this day. And he expertly introduces some of the new science that is building the case for a radical rethink of how we understand - and treat - so-called mental illness in the 21st century. The Divided Mind shows us why and how we can now change our minds about the origins of one of the most mysterious and stigmatised disorders in medicine. It challenges us all to escape from our history to a more joined-up future for mental and physical health.
