Urbanism in the Digital Age

by Mark Gottdiener

Offers a groundbreaking perspective on the future of urban studies Urbanism in the Digital Age provides an essential, paradigm-shifting framework for understanding contemporary urban life. Author Mark Gottdiener redefines the study of urbanism by shifting the focus from traditional city-centered models to the Multi-Centered Metropolitan Region (MCMR), a revolutionary approach that integrates regional dynamics, digital media, and socioeconomic structures. This book challenges long-standing theories, critiques dominant neoliberal policies, and provides innovative solutions to critical contemporary issues. Through an interdisciplinary synthesis of Lefebvrian and Castellsian perspectives, Gottdiener dissects the limitations of classical Marxist and city-centric urban theories while presenting new methodologies for analyzing spatial and social problems. Exploring the interplay between digital media, economic forces, and regional development, 14 in-depth chapters incorporate historical analysis, census data, and case studies to illustrate real-world applications. Presenting a bold new vision for addressing spatial inequalities, rethinking governance, and fostering sustainable urban transformation, Urbanism in the Digital Age: Critiques traditional city-centered urban studies and offers a unique and new perspective based on a regional, digital-age approach. Analyzes the impacts of digital media and neoliberal governance on spatial and social inequalities Examines pressing urban crises, such as affordable housing, transportation, racial segregation, climate change, homelessness, and the crisis effects of draconian Neoliberal policies. Proposes innovative policy solutions for urban planning, sustainability, and regional development Investigates the role of architecture, urban planning and thematic environments in shaping urban experiences and fighting climate change. Urbanism in the Digital Age is an indispensable resource for students and scholars in urban studies, sociology, geography, political science, architecture, and urban planning. It is an ideal textbook for undergraduate and graduate courses on urbanism, social problems, and public policy, and a must-read for policymakers and professionals engaged in urban development and regional planning.

Romanticism and the Contingent Self: The Challenge of Representation (Palgrave Studies in the Enlightenment, Romanticism and Cultures of Print)

by Michael Falk

This book offers a new critique of selfhood in Romantic literature. In the past, Romanticism has been seen as an individualistic movement, with writers believing in the ‘centrality’ of the self. Challenging this prevailing view of Romanticism and the modern self, this study unveils an alternative tradition of Romantic writing in which the self is fragile, degenerate, non-existent – or in a word, contingent. It combines philosophy, intellectual history, literary studies and digital humanities and takes a transnational approach both in its coverage of philosophical thought and literature, including case studies from England, Ireland, Scotland and colonial Australia, with examples from American and European works as well. The book also uses innovative digital techniques such as text analysis, sentiment mining and network analysis to enrich the exploration of text and context. It covers all major genres of Romantic writing: fiction (realist novels), poetry (the sonnet), non-fiction prose (biography) and drama (gothic tragedy). Providing a new framework for understanding the contingent self, this book is of interest to scholars and students of Romantic literature, philosophy of the self and digital humanities.

Pandemic Play: Community in Performance, Gaming, and the Arts (Palgrave Studies in Performance and Technology)

by Carolyn Ownbey Catherine Quirk

When the arts, culture, and entertainment industries came to a halt in late winter 2020, many claimed this was the end of art as we knew it. Theatre managers, museum directors, performers, artists, and everyday folks had to figure out new strategies for living and thriving in a new world order. As the global pandemic and its consequences continue to play out, the question of how we have learned—as creators or consumers—to play, is far from settled. This collection addresses pandemic play in broad terms: how did creative industries adapt to a majority virtual world? How have our understandings of community and play evolved? Might new forms of art and play outlive the pandemic and supplant earlier iterations? Pandemic Play takes these questions as a starting point, exploring strategies, case studies, and effects of the arts worlds gone virtual.

New Weird Fiction and the Anthropocene: Jeff VanderMeer and Ecological Awareness

by Trang Dang

This book explores the development of ecological awareness in Jeff VanderMeer's New Weird novels, focusing specifically on the Southern Reach (2014-2024) and Borne (2017-2019) series. Examining the New Weird genre as an understudied part of climate fiction, the chapters investigate how these texts' language, content, and form develop unique and fascinating ways in which one can think and live more ecologically. As the first book-length study on VanderMeer's work to contextualize his novels through object-oriented ontology (OOO), an emerging branch of speculative philosophy that investigates how things exist, this work enables a uniquely experimental reading of VanderMeer: one that accentuates how his work unsettles what is perceived as normal and exposes the bounds of human reasoning, as well as how we understand ourselves and our relationships with nonhumans. Dang also engages with interdisciplinarity, situating VanderMeer's work within cultural discourse around the Anthropocene, environmental anthropology, prehistoric archeology, evolutionary biology, and Indigenous studies.
