Gender Discrimination at Work in Urban China: The Paradox of Equality and Difference in the Women's Liberation Movement
by Usha ChandranThis book explores gender discrimination and women’s movements in China – from the May Fourth movement to present day. It critically examines the dynamics of the personal and political, or ‘home’ and ‘work’, and the role this discourse plays in women’s lives. The book looks at women's 'work' within the contested field of a gender power struggle both in the politics and society in China. Patterns of employment for women have evolved over the years and women have continued to face new challenges at home and outside as the boundaries between the political and personal blurs. This book analyses the birth of feminism in China, its amalgamation with Marxism to take the form of the women's liberation movement propagated by the party and state and its impact on shaping contemporary Chinese women. It also discusses the theoretical and practical trajectory of women's liberation movement and the changing ideas on women and gender in contemporary China. The book will be of interest to students and researchers of gender studies, political sociology, Chinese studies, sociology of work and industry, history of women's work in China, labour history, gender inequality and discrimination in the workplace in China.

Sense-Making: New Sensory Methods for Exploring the Past and Imagining Possible Futures (Sensory Studies)
by David Howes Sheryl Boyle Genevieve CollinsIn this highly innovative work, the senses are liberated from the confines of the present to serve as vehicles for accessing other historical periods and imagined futures. Sense-Making builds on the burgeoning field of sensory ethnography by introducing a pair of methodologies—sensory (re)construction and sensorial extrapolationCexpressly devised to facilitate time-travel.The first part offers a survey and critique of extant work in sensory archeology and sensory futures. The second part presents a case study of sensory (re)construction in action, focusing on Thornbury Castle (1508—1521) in the UK. The third part probes the life of the senses on the "final frontier", the "next habitat" of humanity—namely, outer space. These sensory case studies are not purely architectural or purely futuristic. They are, at the same time, exercises in "arts-based practice" or "research-creation," where the authors do not just carry out bibliographic research and write about pasts and futures, they make them.Sense-Making is necessary reading for the international community of sensory studies scholars, as well as those with interests spanning material culture, museum and heritage studies, visual and auditory culture, experimental psychology, design and digital technology.
Queer (Queering Criminology and Criminal Justice)
by Ellen ReevesQueer(y)ing Civil Law Responses to Domestic and Family Violence offers unique, in-depth insights into the experiences of LGBTQ+ victim-survivors who have engaged with civil protection order systems.Drawing on data from an Australian study following the experiences of LGBTQ+ victim-survivors of domestic and family violence who engaged with Victoria’s civil protection order system, this book adopts a feminist, queer and trans abolitionist perspective to challenge the assumption that the best response to LGBTQ+ domestic and family violence is a legal one. Problematising responses that fundamentally require increased investment in policing, courts and prisons despite the risks this poses to marginalised individuals and communities, this book centres queer criminology as a framework through which we can situate and critique the rigid victim/perpetrator binaries that are so characteristic of legal responses to violence. This same criminological framework also provides the tools and knowledge needed to envision an alternative, community-oriented response to harm—within and beyond queer communities. In this way, the book presents queer criminology not only as a way of understanding LGBTQ+ experiences, but also as a means for analysing the broader shortcomings of a system that more often exacerbates risk of harm than minimises it.Queer(y)ing Civil Law Responses to Domestic and Family Violence will be useful for students and scholars of LGBTQ+ violence, as well as a valuable resource for policy makers, legal and specialist practitioners and advocates considering how best to respond to LGBTQ+ domestic and family violence.
Language, Place, and the Body in Childhood Literacies: Theory, Practice, and Social Justice (Expanding Literacies in Education)
by Rachel Holmes Rosie Flewitt Abigail Hackett Christina MacRae Khawla Badwan Ruth Churchill Dower Warda Farah Vishnu Kk Nair David Ben ShannonChallenging dominant views of early childhood language development and knowledge, this thought-provoking volume illuminates the importance of place, the body, and movement in opening space for young children’s improvisatory, creative, playful language practices.Bringing together a rich collection of contemporary research and diverse perspectives, the book centers on the premise that ‘where’ talk happens—be it spoken, mimed, signed, or assisted through one or more communication tools—is not a neutral backdrop or controllable variable. Rather, it is deeply entangled in the emergence of language from bodies, in how these vocalizations make their way into the world, what they might feel like and set into motion, and how they are received, heard and listened to by other humans and by non-humans. Chapter authors introduce theories about language, body, and place, while also providing examples of what this work may look like in practice. This book is key reading for those who work with young children and families, including teachers, pre-service teachers studying child development, speech and language therapists, support workers, and those in the arts, cultural and environmental sectors. It is also highly relevant to researchers, literacy education scholars, and anyone who endeavors to think more expansively and critically about language and literacy in early childhood contexts.
Post-Colonial Realism: Cultural Conflicts, Cuisine, and the Changing International System
by Hanna Samir KassabIn Post-Colonial Realism, Hanna Samir Kassab develops a theoretical framework to explain, understand, and predict international conflict, placing culture at the center of international political analysis.Kassab contends that nationalism, a belief system, forms an intervening variable that shapes the foreign policy behavior of states. Studying food is central to understanding nationalist belief systems that shape international politics. By combining theories of nationalism with post-colonialist understandings of cultural revitalization, Kassab conceptualizes state motivation to understand how cultural symbols shape nationalist identities, to see the fault lines of civilization through food, and to appreciate the centrality of identity issues. Using ethnography to understand food ownership as part of nationalist conflict, Kassab examines neighboring states (Greece, North Macedonia, Turkey and Armenia) alongside India. In each country study chapter, he compares at least two nationalisms and views of cuisine ownership. He later maps out potential future flashpoints as the international system becomes increasingly competitive due to the changing structure of the international system: unipolarity to multipolarity.Post-Colonial Realism offers a more robust and flexible theory of international relations, concentrating not on abstractions but on individuals and their collective beliefs.
Rethinking Disability, Care, and Motherhood: Lived Experiences of Disabled Mothers in India (Critical and Qualitative Approaches to Mental Health Experiences among Vulnerable Groups)

The Ethics of Argumentation (Routledge Studies in Contemporary Philosophy)
by Katharina StevensThis book offers a new approach to the theory of argumentation that conceptualizes argumentation as a fundamentally ethical activity whose norms are grounded in, and must be selected according to, moral reasons.Current normative approaches to argumentation do not treat ethics as an integral part of argumentation theory. This is at least in part due to a methodological commitment not to address internal states of the arguers, such as intentions and beliefs, which makes moral theorizing about argumentation difficult. This book presents three arguments for why ethics ought to be a central element in normative theorizing about argumentation. Through these arguments it shows, first, that ethics is needed for providing normative argumentation theory with its foundation and for offering arguers reliable guidance for decision- making, both about which norms ought to govern their arguing and how they should shape each argument they make. Second, it addresses some of the most persistent problems faced by currently dominant normative approaches to argumentation, most notably that they are only reliable under the assumption that unrealistic background conditions are fulfilled. Finally, it provides the groundwork for a systematic ethics of argumentation. It does so by showing how a function of argumentation can be justified via moral reasons and by providing the outlines for both an applied ethics of (meta- level) normative argument design and an applied role-ethics of object-level arguing. The Ethics of Argumentation is essential reading for researchers and graduate students in a wide range of disciplines— including philosophy, communication studies, linguistics, and rhetoric— who are interested in communication, deliberation, argumentation, critical thinking, and social epistemology.
Strategic Management of Wastewater from Intensive Rural Industries (Springer Water)
by Nurudeen Abiola Oladoja Emmanuel Iyayi UnuabonahThis book provides insight into the environmental and ecological impacts of the operations of intensive rural industries and how these undesirable impacts can be effectively managed. In the developing economies, the different human empowerment and poverty alleviation schemes have produced myriads of intensive rural industries that littered States in these economies. These industries are often characterized by their small scale, outmoded technology, obsolete equipment, poor management and large water consumption. Since their operations usually consume large volume of fresh water, high magnitude of untreated wastewater is equally discharged. The huge consumption of freshwater puts a lot of stress on freshwater resource available for human use, and the discharge of contaminated wastewater from these industries disrupts the ecological balance. It has been reported that untreated industrial waste constitutes about two-thirds of the total waste discharge into water bodies, and the largest chunk of this is derived from rural enterprises. Therefore, the environmental cost of rural industrialization is enormous and needs to be examined. The evaluation of the quality characteristics, the socioeconomic impacts and the law guiding the generation and the discharge of the wastewater from specific rural industries are enunciated. The conventional practice and the trends in the effective management of specific wastewater samples are also discussed.

Structuring Sustainable Finance Transactions: A Practical Guide to the Legal and Financial Considerations of Green Finance Instruments
by Aaron FranklinThe rapid rise of green bonds, sustainability-linked loans and other sustainable finance transactions has been one of the most surprising developments in corporate finance over the past 15 years. Sustainable finance is rapidly growing as an educational subject among top universities, business schools and law schools, separate from the only somewhat related &“ESG&” and sustainable investing trends. But sustainable finance transactions are prone to being misunderstood, sometimes the subject of controversy and structured largely behind closed doors. Mainstream news outlets, NGOs and political leaders routinely criticize this evolving market, with arguments ranging from greenwashing (not doing enough) to anti-ESG (doing too much). Making matters worse, there is a dearth of pragmatic, comprehensive and objective resources to help students and practitioners go beyond a superficial understanding. This book will be a first-of-its-kind resource unlocking the mysteries of structuring and executing sustainable finance transactions. This book addresses the entire spectrum of new and emerging transaction types, as well as the rarely articulated concepts explaining why these deals work the way they do.
