#MeToo and Feminism: Weinstein and Beyond
by Karen BoyleThis book is a revised, updated and expanded edition of #MeToo, Weinstein and Feminism (2019). In this second edition, Boyle argues for the importance of understanding #MeToo in relation to an ongoing history of feminist activism and popular misogyny, which normalises and values men’s abuse of women. She considers the consequences of #MeToo for accused men, notably with regards to cancellation practices and criminal justice, drawing on prominent examples such as Harvey Weinstein, R. Kelly, Johnny Depp and Woody Allen, among many others. Two new chapters—on the long #MeToo movement and on survivor testimony—consider #MeToo alongside debates on popular feminism and misogyny in a range of contexts and reflect on the implications of the continued emphasis on survivor testimony in media coverage of sexual harassment and assault. Written by one of the foremost experts in gender, media and violence in the UK, this new edition is essential reading for those interested in feminism and the media, scholars and students alike.
Diagnostic Procedures in Patients with Neck Masses
by Jerzy Klijanienko Wojciech Golusiński Beatrix Cochand-Priollet Olivier ChoussyThis book gathers the consensus recommendations on diagnostic procedures in patients with neck masses by the European Head and Neck Society, European Federation of Cytology Societies, European Society of Hybrid Imaging and International Melanoma Pathology Study Group. Because of the variability of anatomical structures and the richness of histological tissues, the diagnostic process for neck masses is often complex. The diagnostic process depends on the habits of oncological centers, the experience of specialists and particular standards. In reality, there is no international recommendations which would allow to define the optimal and least invasive modalities for carrying out a rapid and accurate diagnosis. Written by the most eminent specialists of different profiles and geographic areas, who present and analyze different technical modalities, the book combines the different points of view and defines the agreed upon optimal technique. Each chapter is short, informative, well referenced and the main messages are placed in tables and boxes. The book is addressed to oncologists, radiologists, nuclear physicians, ENT surgeons, surgical- and cyto-pathologists. This work is under the patronage of the International Academy of Cytoloy (IAC).

Nietzsche's Philosophy of Life Affirmation: Experimenting with Art and Science to Transfigure Humankind
by Michael J. McNealThis anthology broadly examines the interrelated roles of art, science, and experimentation in Nietzsche's philosophical project. It is divided into two parts, the first organized around the theme of experimentally reconceiving our world, the second investigating the aforementioned subjects in Nietzsche’s “free spirit” or “middle period” works. Together, the essays comprising the book underscore Nietzsche’s concern that experimentation with values ultimately provide humankind with a new “wherefore” or purpose. Wide-ranging in its scope, this volume brings together a diverse group of scholars working in both the analytic and continental traditions to provide original insights into Nietzsche’s thought. A unique contribution to the scholarship, it deepens understanding of the relationship between Nietzsche’s critiques of art and science, the role this relationship plays in his futural thought, and the experimental, life-affirming practices that his free spirit project may enable toward the transfiguration of humankind.

Agricultural Greenhouse Gas Emissions: Problems and Solutions
by Kuldeep Bauddh Nirmali Bordoloi K. K. BaruahThis book collects information on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, especially from the agro-ecosystems. It highlights the GHG emission mitigation measures using environmentally viable and cost-effective technologies. The title deals with the evaluation of the emission of GHGs from different agriculture sources, estimates the emission trends, analyzes the affecting drivers and assesses the feasible and suitable mitigation options for local farmers. Agricultural activities including land clearing, crop cultivation, fertilizer application, irrigation pattern, animal husbandry and fisheries have a significant impact on GHG production and emissions. The application of excess amount of inorganic fertilizer to increase the crop production may also boost the emissions of GHGs from agricultural fields. Therefore, it is urgent to concurrently quantify the fluxes of GHGs, improve understanding of gaseous emissions from different agricultural sources and to develop mitigation strategies to reduce the future climate chaos. This book is of interest to the farmers, horticulturists, scientists, ecologists, and a valuable source of reference to the relevant researchers and students in the region. Artificial Intelligence and the Perspective of Autonomous Surgery
by Konrad Karcz Zbigniew Nawrat Andrew A. GumbsThis book has two heroes - the surgeon and the robot. The education system and intelligence can create a human who is specialized in surgery. While the accurate analysis of data with machine learning, AI, can create a more autonomous robot for surgery. Currently, robots still require human input in the decision-making loop, whether or not this will always be the case is an issue that still needs to be debated, analyzed and studied, preferably by computer scientists AND surgeons. Surgeons and their patients are increasingly opting for less invasive surgeries. However, among their many advantages, there is an important issue: less invasiveness always means limited access to direct information from the operating field (3D image, local palpation sensations, all information about the "whole" patient and feedback from the accompanying team during teleoperation). To increase precision, we are increasingly using surgical robots and mechatronic instruments. The less invasive the surgery and the greater the precision of robotic micro-instruments, the greater the role of artificial intelligence methods, especially machine learning, which supports the surgeon in making decisions, planning and performing the procedure. The development of artificial intelligence and further evidence of its effectiveness in various application fields mean that the work of a doctor is changing today. In the book, we address the issue of AI surgery, asking whether this means that an AI surgeon will be created? A key question about autonomous surgical robots will come up regularly: how far can we go with their autonomy while maintaining safe and effective procedures? The book provides useful information on both early successes, failures, and expectations related to the development of new technologies in surgery. It is a guide written by various experts, intended for a wide audience: from medical development planners, through students, to doctors and decision-makers.

It begins by spanning the tumultuous aftermath of World War II to the pivotal 1979 revolution, providing a poignant account of the profound impact of these historical events on the author’s life. The book delves into the multifaceted consequences of the reformist period that began in the 1960s. They enabled Shireen to enter the diplomatic service, but also cast a shadow of adversity over her family. Ultimately, the reforms contributed to internal divisions that ignited the 1979 revolution. The book then explores Shireen’s immigrant experience in the USA, where she assumed the role of an “ethnic expert” in the volatile arena of Middle East politics. It candidly recounts challenges she faced in maintaining intellectual integrity while earning a livelihood, highlighting the precariousness of being on the right side of controversial issues. The book does not offer definitive solutions to specific problems. Yet it resonates with contemporary international security and developmental challenges and offers insights that remain relevant in today’s complex global landscape. With its multifaceted narrative encompassing Iran’s social and political history, women’s studies, immigrant experiences, and a personal perspective on critical junctures in U.S.-Iranian relations, this book appeals to a diverse readership. Radio Astronomy in Canada: Young Science in a Young Country (Historical & Cultural Astronomy)
by Elizabeth Griffin Richard Jarrell Jasper WallHere is the tale of Canada’s intriguing development of the science of Radio Astronomy. In 1946 the lone figure of Arthur Covington started monitoring the radio emission of the Sun, a programme that continues to this day. By the 1960s Canada had progressed to constructing two radio observatories at either ends of the country (the DRAO and the ARO), and universities were coming onboard. The story continues through the dire times for these and follows their fortunes and fates right up to the present, with Canada now playing key roles in billion-dollar international telescope projects. It concludes with the construction and operation of Canada’s own transformational telescope, CHIME. Anecdotes and images throughout the book liven the story. The authors—two practising astronomers—have painstakingly put together this fascinating story, drawing on first-hand experiences, valuable contributions from many colleagues, and the research of science historian, Richard Jarrell (1942-2013).This book fills a gap in the substantial literature on the history of radio astronomy. Carefully-researched by three experts and based on input by further experts in the field, it documents the extensive scientific and (especially) technical innovations of Canadian scientists and engineers. This includes the important Canadian absolute flux-density calibrations, the critical Canadian contribution to low-frequency radio astronomy and VLBI, and the long-running solar monitoring programme. Frank discussions about the excellent 46-m ARO telescope and its fate lead into considerations of Canada’s contributions to recent international projects – the JCMT, ALMA and the upcoming SKA. The book concludes with a description of CHIME, Canada’s own new-generation radio installation.Ken Kellermann, Senior Scientist Emeritus, National Radio Astronomy Observatory, Charlottesville, USA

The Civilising Process of Portuguese Bullfighting: Warriors, Courtiers, Professionals...and Barbarians? (Palgrave Studies on Norbert Elias)
by Fernando Ampudia de HaroThis book uses Norbert Elias&’s theory of the civilising process to provide a sociological and historical study of Portuguese bullfighting. Its aim is to understand how bullfighting is historically configured according to the transformations undergone by the society in which it takes place. This means that bullfighting is approached in terms of its relationship with factors such as social structure, state power, the control of violence and the sensitivities and behaviours of different social groups. Its evolution and its construction as an activity can only be explained if we look at these factors from a sociological perspective that takes into account the passage of time. Such a view allows us to think of bullfighting in process and figurational terms. It means going back a thousand years and reconstructing a journey that, overall, cannot be described as a simple succession of facts, laws, dates and decisions by great personalities. On the contrary, this book argues it is a journey subject to the logic of changes in society, power relations and patterns of behaviour considered suitable for social life. And, as a path, it is not defined at random. It has a direction: bullfighting has been moving towards formalisation and pacification for centuries. This book is of special interest to students and scholars of sociological theory, historical sociology, Eliasian theory, and human-animal relations.

Capitalist Cold: Emotions and the Economy in Europe and the United States (Routledge Approaches to History)
by Kerstin Maria Pahl Agnes ArndtThe capitalist system has often been described by its critics as a heartless economic structure corroding social bonds and symbolic values. Its defenders and analysts likewise use narratives that position emotions as central to the economy. This book enquires into the history of these framings. To explore the role of emotions in economic practices and imaginaries, the volume presents case studies including original rereadings of well-known texts such as Theodor Adorno and Max Horkheimer’s Dialectic of Enlightenment, as well as forays into little-known histories such as representations of capitalists in post-war Turkey, and how art dealers strategically used emotions for navigating the market in interwar Germany. Rather than simply reproducing the image of “cold capitalism”, however, it offers nuanced investigations into the ambivalent images evoked by living and working within economic structures. In late-socialist Poland, capitalism felt “warm” and “fuzzy”, while pop culture of the seventies found it not destructive but cool, hip, and edgy. This book is aimed at students and scholars of social, economic, and cultural history.
