Nanotechnology in Miniaturization: An Emerging Trend to Fabricate Future Devices (Nanotechnology in the Life Sciences)
by Chaudhery Mustansar Hussain Sudheesh K. Shukla Bindu Mangla Santanu Patra Meenakshi ChoudharyNanotechnology is rapidly growing as a new technology alternative to create advance materials with unique characteristics and performance for vast applications in a range of industrial sectors. In recent years, a number of nanotechnology-based products have appeared in our day-to-today lives. On the other hand, industries have also considered nano-concepts to produce high-added value products with superior capacity, reliability, and efficiency. The field of nanotechnology is one of the most popular areas for current research and development in almost all technical disciplines. This includes miniaturization of microelectronics, nanomedicine, nano-emulsion particles, fuel cell catalysts, self-assembled polymer films, nanofabrication, imprint lithography, and more. This book summarizes recent advances in miniaturization using nanotechnological approaches. The ability to interact with matter at nanoscale has led to the development of nanoarchitecture and nanomaterials which have the capability of exceeding the limits of conventional modalities. This book provides insight into the development and trends which are progressing quickly in the field of nano-miniaturized-based devices and tools. This book offers an overview of the evolution of miniaturization of engineering systems and devices, which was initiated over one-half century ago. The trend of further miniaturization of devices to the ultimate atomic scale will not only continue, it will become a dominant technological development in the first half of the new century, if not for longer. Such development will require significant changes in every aspect of design and manufacturing, as well as production management over traditional engineering practices. Production of miniaturized device components and engineering systems of micro- and nanoscale is clearly beyond the capability of current machine tools. Manufacturing of nano-scaled devices and components involves isolation, transportation, and re-assembly of atoms and molecules. This nanomachining technology involves not only physical-chemical processes as in the case of microfabrication, but it also involves application and integration of the principles of molecular biology.
Bergson and Freedom: The Creation of the New Within the Flow of Duration (Palgrave Perspectives on Process Philosophy)
by Brian MacallanThis book provides the first full length treatment of the nature and function of freedom within the work of Henri Bergson. It does so while also introducing Bergson’s key ideas and major works. It explores Bergson through the lens of freedom, while at the same time showing how Bergson’s work might engage with current challenges. It does this by examining the four major works of Bergson, highlighting how freedom can be conceived in each text and how Bergson addresses key freedom problematics in those works. It offers a definition of freedom in Bergson as the “creation of the new within the flow of duration.” What emerges, is that freedom remains crucial for Bergson beyond the obvious treatment of freedom directly in Time and Free Will. Free will, memory, evolution, religion, and morality are major themes for Bergson. Moreover, there are particular freedom problematics concerning each of those themes that illustrate the central importance of freedom in Bergson. These include determinism, dualism, materialism, mechanism, finalism, and the notion of the open and closed.
Recent Stability Issues for Linear Dynamical Systems: Cetraro, Italy 2021 (Lecture Notes in Mathematics #2357)
by Nicola Guglielmi Volker Mehrmann Christian Lubich Nicolas Gillis Punit Sharma Bart VandereyckenThis book concerns matrix nearness problems in the framework of spectral optimization. It addresses some current research directions in spectral-based stability studies for differential equations, with material on ordinary differential equations (ODEs), differential algebraic equations and dynamical systems. Here, ‘stability’ is interpreted in a broad sense which covers the need to develop stable and reliable algorithms preserving some qualitative properties of the computed solutions, methodologies which are helpful to assess the onset of potential instabilities or loss of robustness, and tools to determine the asymptotic properties of the solution or its discretization. The topics considered include the computation of robustness measures for linear problems, the use of low-rank ODEs to approximate such measures via gradient systems, the regularity, stability, passivity and controllability analysis of structured linear descriptor systems, and the use of acceleration techniques to deal with some of the presented computational problems. Although the emphasis is on the numerical study of differential equations and dynamical systems, the book will also be of interest to researchers in matrix theory, spectral optimization and spectral graph theory, as well as in dynamical systems and systems theory.
Exploring the Grassroots Practice of Rural Revitalization
by Tuan Yang Jianjin Liu Zhihui TongThis book shows six cases of rural grassroots cadres and masses exploring the implementation of the rural revitalization strategy. These cases show the problems encountered in the work of rural leaders and the ideas to solve contradictions (policy and reality, individual and collective), reveal the importance of organization, governance, and talent building in rural development, and emphasize that promoting rural revitalization must empower the village collective and require the active participation of all sectors of society. This work can be used as a reference book for grassroots cadres, rural revitalization workers, the public, professional researchers, and teachers and students of colleges and universities to deeply understand the grassroots practical exploration and theoretical thinking and research of rural revitalization.

Theoretical Perspectives for Direct Social Work Practice
by Peter Lehmann Kristin W. Bolton J. Christopher HallA Duty to Resist
by Candice DelmasWhat are our responsibilities in the face of injustice? How far should we go to fight it? Many would argue that as long as a state is nearly just, citizens have a moral duty to obey the law. Proponents of civil disobedience generally hold that, given this moral duty, a person needs a solid justification to break the law. But activists from Henry David Thoreau and Mohandas Gandhi to the Movement for Black Lives have long recognized that there are times when, rather than having a duty to obey the law, we have a duty to disobey it. Taking seriously the history of this activism, A Duty to Resist wrestles with the problem of political obligation in real world societies that harbor injustice. Candice Delmas argues that the duty of justice, the principle of fairness, the Samaritan duty, and political association impose responsibility to resist under conditions of injustice. We must expand political obligation to include a duty to resist unjust laws and social conditions even in legitimate states. For Delmas, this duty to resist demands principled disobedience, and such disobedience need not always be civil. At times, covert, violent, evasive, or offensive acts of lawbreaking can be justified, even required. Delmas defends the viability and necessity of illegal assistance to undocumented migrants, leaks of classified information, distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks, sabotage, armed self-defense, guerrilla art, and other modes of resistance. There are limits: principle alone does not justify law breaking. But uncivil disobedience can sometimes be not only permissible but required in the effort to resist injustice.

Land Power: Who Has It, Who Doesn't, and How That Determines the Fate of Societies
by Michael AlbertusAn award-winning political scientist shows that a society&’s path to prosperity, sustainability, and equality depends on who owns the land For millennia, land has been a symbol of wealth and privilege. But the true power of land ownership is even greater than we might think. In Land Power, political scientist Michael Albertus shows that who owns the land determines whether a society will be equal or unequal, whether it will develop or decline, and whether it will safeguard or sacrifice its environment. Modern history has been defined by land reallocation on a massive scale. From the 1500s on, European colonial powers and new nation-states shifted indigenous lands into the hands of settlers. The 1900s brought new waves of land appropriation, from Soviet and Maoist collectivization to initiatives turning large estates over to family farmers. The shuffle continues today as governments vie for power and prosperity by choosing who should get land. Drawing on a career&’s worth of original research and on-the-ground fieldwork, Albertus shows that choices about who owns the land have locked in poverty, sexism, racism, and climate crisis—and that what we do with the land today can change our collective fate. Global in scope, Land Power argues that saving civilization must begin with the earth under our feet.
