Unmaking Russia’s Abortion Culture: Family Planning and the Struggle for a Liberal Biopolitics (Policy to Practice)

by Michele Rivkin-Fish

As the predominant form of birth control in Soviet society, abortion reflected key paradoxes of state socialism: women held formal equality but lacked basic needs such as contraceptives. With market reforms, Russians enjoyed new access to Western contraceptives and new pressures to postpone childbearing until economically self-sufficient. But habits of family planning did not emerge automatically—they required extensive physician retraining, public education, and cultural transformation. In Unmaking Russia&’s Abortion Culture, author Michele Rivkin-Fish examines the creative strategies of Russians who promoted family planning in place of routine abortion. Rather than emphasizing individual rights, they explained family planning&’s benefits to the nation—its potential to strengthen families and prevent the secondary sterility that resulted when women underwent repeat, poor-quality abortions. Still, fierce debates about abortion and contraceptives erupted as declining fertility was framed as threatening Russia&’s demographic sovereignty. Although Russian family planners embraced a culturally meaningful liberalism that would rationalize public policy and reenchant relations, nationalist opponents cast family planning as suspicious for its association with the individualistic, &“child-free&” West. This book tells the story of how Russian family planners developed culturally salient frameworks to promote the acceptability of contraceptives and help end routine abortion. It also documents how nationalist campaigns for higher fertility denounced family planning and ultimately dismantled its institutions. By tracing these processes, Unmaking Russia&’s Abortion Culture demonstrates the central importance of reproductive politics in the struggle for liberalizing social change that preceded Russia&’s 2022 descent into war, repression, and global marginalization.

Lorca's Experimental Theater: Breaking the Guardrails of Convention (New Hispanisms: Cultural and Literary Studies)

by Andrew A. Anderson

Critical and historical discussions of the life and work of Federico García Lorca, Spain’s foremost poet and playwright of the twentieth century, often obscure the author’s more avant-garde dramatic works. In Lorca’s Experimental Theater, Andrew A. Anderson focuses on four of Lorca’s most challenging plays—Amor de don Perlimplín con Belisa en su jardín, El público, Así que pasen cinco años, and El sueño de la vida (previously known as Comedia sin título)—and on the surrounding context in which they came to be written and in only one case performed during his lifetime. While none of Lorca’s plays can be considered conventional, these four works stand out in his corpus for challenging theatrical conventions most forcefully, both thematically and technically. With discussions of stagecraft, artistic modernism, and the historical avant-garde, Lorca’s Experimental Theater provides detailed interpretive readings of the four plays, surveys their textual and performative history, and examines the most important contemporary influences on Lorca’s creation of these expressive, innovative works.

Stochastic Thermodynamic Treatment of Thermal Anisotropy (Springer Theses)

by Olga Movilla Miangolarra

This thesis advances our understanding of how thermal anisotropy can be exploited to extract work through a mechanism that is quite distinct from the classical Carnot heat engine. Anisotropy, the presence of thermal or chemical gradients, is ubiquitous in the real world and powers the cascade of processes that sustain life. The thesis quantifies, for the first time, the maximum amount of power and efficiency that a suitable mechanism (a Brownian gyrator) can achieve in such conditions. An important contribution at the center of the thesis is to lay out a geometric framework that brings out the importance of an isoperimetric problem to analyze and quantify optimal operation of thermodynamic engines that harvest energy when simultaneously in contact with several heat baths. Fundamental bounds are derived via isoperimetric inequalities which capture the trade-off between work and dissipation that accrue during thermodynamic cycles. A geometric theory that allows such insights is explained first – the theory of optimal mass transport – followed by rudiments of stochastic thermodynamics that allow for quantification of work and entropy production during finite-time thermodynamic transitions. The thesis further explores entropy production due to heat flowing between heat baths of different temperature through the system dynamics, and concludes with analysis as a proof-of-concept of an autonomous engine that harvests energy from a thermal gradient to continuously produce work in a stable limit cycle operation.

Black America and Existential Incompatibility: Phenomenology, Ethics and the Problem That Is Race (Neighborhoods, Communities, and Urban Marginality)

by Avery Merriel Smith

Within the context of W.E.B. Du Bois’ question “How does it feel to be a problem?”, this volume examines the “problem” using a phenomenological approach, that is to say, in terms of one’s experience of such. More specifically, the author explores three points: the Black person’s experience of being a problem for White America; her experience of White America as a problem or obstacle for their survival and ability to thrive; and her experience of navigating, negotiating and surviving a world that is presented as a duality. This book deconstructs the world(s) that the Black person experiences by first understanding her as a “Dasein” (the Heideggerian concept of a being that is aware of its being in the world and aware of other beings that are in the world it experiences). In considering the Black person as a Dasein, the author affirms the intrinsic value of her being and, therefore, validates the experience she has of the world in which she finds herself. Finally, this volume incorporates Emmanuel Levinas’ philosophy of the face and Paul Ricoeur’s study of the self to help craft an understanding of the ontology of human relationship to support the advocacy for an ethical encounter between the Black person and those whom she encounters in both the Black world and the White world in which she must navigate and concurrently exist.

Statistics in Food and Biotechnology: From Theory to Practical Applications (Integrating Food Science and Engineering Knowledge Into the Food Chain #16)

by Gerhard Schleining Saverio Mannino Prisana Suwannaporn

The proper use of statistical methods is essential in food processing and biotechnology, and very few publications have focused on the practical application of these methods. This book utilizes case studies to explain the corresponding basics with a focus on understanding how and when to use the appropriate statistical methods. The text is structured according to practical applications, starting from data collection and data treatment, moving to product development, process control and analytical methods. Practical Examples of Using Statistics in Food and Biotechnology begins with a detailed introduction to statistics and their use in food processing. Substance Use Disorders in Adult Critically Ill Patients

by Kunal Karamchandani Jon E. Grant

The steady increase in individuals with substance use disorder requiring admission to the intensive care unit (ICU) has been an area of concern, leading to an increase in ICU utilization and costs related to both licit and illicit abuse of these drugs. Most recently, the COVID 19 pandemic has contributed to an increase in substance use and overdoses, with preliminary data suggesting an almost 30% increase in overdose deaths over the course of the pandemic. This increase in prevalence underscores the importance for the critical care practitioners to be knowledgeable about how substance use disorders impact the critically ill patient and understanding the epidemiology of substance use in critically ill patients. Management of patients with substance use disorders is complicated by the associated intoxication and withdrawal syndromes, as well as by the physiologic changes that occur with chronic use that can cause, predispose patients to, and worsen the severity of many conditions. This makes it vital that critical care providers are adept at identifying and treating common intoxication and withdrawal syndromes, as well as proficient at treatment considerations owing to chronic use of such addictive substances. This text provides a comprehensive, state-of-the-art review of the critical care implications of some of the commonly used addiction drugs and serves as a very useful resource for everyone involved in the care of critically ill patients impacted by substance use disorder. It provides a concise yet comprehensive summary of the status of the field that helps guide patient management and stimulate investigative efforts. All chapters are written by experts in their fields and include the most up to date scientific and clinical information.
