IIW Guidelines on Weld Quality in Relationship to Fatigue Strength
by A. F. Hobbacher Bertil Jonsson G. Dobmann M. Kassner G. MarquisThis book presents guidelines on quantitative and qualitative measures of the geometric features and imperfections of welds to ensure that it meets the fatigue strength requirements laid out in the recommendations of the IIW (International Institute of Welding). Welds that satisfy these quality criteria can be assessed in accordance with existing IIW recommendations based on nominal stress, structural stress, notch stress or linear fracture mechanics. Further, the book defines more restrictive acceptance criteria based on weld geometry features and imperfections with increased fatigue strength. Fatigue strength for these welds is defined as S-N curves expressed in terms of nominal applied stress or hot spot stress. Where appropriate, reference is made to existing quality systems for welds. In addition to the acceptance criteria and fatigue assessment curves, the book also provides guidance on their inspection and quality control. The successful implementation of these methods depends on adequate training for operators and inspectors alike. As such, the publication of the present IIW Recommendations is intended to encourage the production of appropriate training aids and guidelines for educating, training and certifying operators and inspectors.
Recommendations for Fatigue Design of Welded Joints and Components (IIW Collection)
by A. F. HobbacherThis book provides a basis for the design and analysis of welded components that are subjected to fluctuating forces, to avoid failure by fatigue. It is also a valuable resource for those on boards or commissions who are establishing fatigue design codes. For maximum benefit, readers should already have a working knowledge of the basics of fatigue and fracture mechanics. The purpose of designing a structure taking into consideration the limit state for fatigue damage is to ensure that the performance is satisfactory during the design life and that the survival probability is acceptable. The latter is achieved by the use of appropriate partial safety factors. This document has been prepared as the result of an initiative by Commissions XIII and XV of the International Institute of Welding (IIW).
Recommendations for Fatigue Design of Welded Joints and Components (IIW Collection)
by A. F. Hobbacher J. BaumgartnerThis book presents an enriched exploration of structural fatigue assessment. Now in its updated form, this comprehensive edition delves into foundational principles while introducing extensive revisions and fresh content. Notable enhancements include a refined discussion on stress determination, an expanded section on fatigue resistance, also for welded thin sheets, and a thorough update of crucial chapters such as fatigue assessment using S-N curves at constant and variable amplitudes as well as practical application of fracture mechanics on fatigue of welded joints. The addition of new chapters on high-frequency mechanical impact (HFMI) treatment, insightful statistical considerations based on IIW recommendations, and practical application examples further distinguish this edition. With updated references and meticulous attention to detail, this new edition emerges as an indispensable resource, offering professionals and enthusiasts a deeper understanding of fatigue assessment in structural engineering. Prepared as the result of an initiative by Commissions XIII and XV of the International Institute of Welding (IIW), this book represents a significant contribution to the field.
Arabic Literature to the end of the Umayyad Period
by T. M. Johnstone R. B. Serjeant A. F. L. Beeston G. R. SmithOriginally published in 1983, The Cambridge History of Arabic Literature was the first general survey of the field to have been published in English for over fifty years and the first attempted in such detail in a multi-volume form. The volumes of the History provide an invaluable source of reference and understanding of the intellectual, literary and religious heritage of the Arabic-speaking and Islamic world. This volume begins its coverage with the oral verse of the sixth century AD, and ends with the fall of the Umayyad dynasty two centuries later. Within this period fall major events: the life of the Prophet Muhammad, the founding of the Islamic religion, the great Arab Islamic conquests of territories outside the Arabian Peninsula, and their meeting, as overlords, with the Byzantine and Sasanian world. Contributors to this volume discuss an array of topics including the influences of Greeks, Persians and Syrians on early Arabic literature.

The Life Of A Regimental Officer During The Great War — 1793-1815: Compiled From The Correspondence Of Colonel Samuel Rice, C.B., K.H. 51st Light Infantry And From Other Sources
by A. F. Mockler-Ferryman Colonel Samuel Rice C.B., K.H.The 51st Light Infantry, or 52nd as they were numbered during the French wars, were always viewed as a crack unit within the Duke of Wellington's Peninsular army. As a part of the Light Division, they formed part of the skirmish screen that would be the first to strike during an advance and the last bulwark of defence during a retreat.Colonel Samuel Rice fought in all of the 51st campaigns during the period starting as the most junior of officers, an ensign rising to the rank of Lt.-Colonel in November 1813. He fought in the engagements at Coruña, Fuentes d'Oñoro, Cuidad Rodrigo, the storm of Badajoz, Salamanca, San Murcial and Orthez. He also saw service on Corsica, Cape of Good Hope, Sri Lanka and at Waterloo near Hougomont. His letters are blended into a tight and gripping narrative by Antony Mockler-Ferryman, blending a historical overview with the eye-witness details of the individual.Author -- Mockler-Ferryman, A. Ship Resistance and Propulsion: Practical Estimation of Ship Propulsive Power
by D. A. Hudson A. F. Molland S. R. TurnockShip Resistance and Propulsion is dedicated to providing a comprehensive and modern scientific approach to evaluating ship resistance and propulsion. The study of the propulsive power enables the size and mass of the propulsion engines to be established and estimates made of the fuel consumption and likely operating costs. This book, written by experts in the field, includes the latest developments from applied research, including those in experimental and CFD techniques, and provides guidance for the practical estimation of ship propulsive power for a range of ship types. This text includes sufficient published standard series data for hull resistance and propeller performance to enable practitioners to make ship power predictions based on material and data contained within the book. A large number of fully worked examples are included to illustrate applications of the data and powering methodologies; these include cargo and container ships, tankers and bulk carriers, ferries, warships, patrol craft, work boats, planing craft and yachts. The book is aimed at a broad readership including practising naval architects and marine engineers, sea-going officers, small craft designers, undergraduate and postgraduate degree students. It should also appeal to others involved in transportation, transport efficiency and eco-logistics who need to carry out reliable estimates of ship power requirements.
