Topology of Superconductors: Theory of Symmetry Indicators, Classifications of Superconducting Nodes, and High-Throughput Investigations (Springer Theses)
by Seishiro OnoThis book develops a symmetry-based approach to superconductors, which enables us to efficiently diagnose topological and nodal superconductivity. Superconductivity has fascinated physicists since its first discovery. In particular, unconventional superconductivity, which arises from unusual attractive interactions between electrons, has been intensively studied for the last few decades. More recently, it turns out that topological nature of superconductivity is closely related to how electrons pair up. After reviewing the basic concepts of the symmetry-based analysis of band topology, the first part of this book discusses a generalization of symmetry-based indicators—an efficient way to diagnose topological insulating phases without full information on wave functions—to superconducting phases. The second part of this book develops a novel scheme to extensively classify superconducting nodes—geometry of gapless regions in the Bogoliubov quasiparticle spectrum—based on band topology. Finally, combining these two parts, this book proposes a systematic scheme to predict topological and nodal properties of the superconducting phase by considering various possible pairing symmetries.

Queer and Femme Gazes in AfroAsian American Visual Culture
by Rebecca Kumar Seulghee LeeQueer and Femme Gazes in AfroAsian American Visual Culture is a scholarly collection that takes comparative Black-Asian representations in televisual culture from queer and femme perspectives. AfroAsian representations on screen—as well as their attendant critical gazes—have historically emphasized cross-racial masculinities at the expense of queer and/or femme visions. The prevalence of these previous televisual artefacts—and the ways they have been watched—has contributed directly to white heteronormative legacies within film and visual studies. The collection intervenes by excavating the intimacies and political possibilities within AfroAsian femme, queer, and transgender life. The authors offer alternative ways of looking at racial representation in their attendance to developments in AfroAsian visual culture: music videos, video games, genre serials, and independent and short films.

War and Data on Armed Conflicts: Global Networks Examining Casualties (Evidence-Based Approaches to Peace and Conflict Studies #14)
by Motomichi IgarashiThis book is the first to provide a comprehensive examination of the entities responsible for the production of data on armed conflicts (DAC), the processes by which it is generated, and the international norms that govern it. While numerous studies have focused on the statistical aspects of armed conflicts, this book distinguishes itself through its historical analysis of the relationship between actors, data generation methods, and international norms. The book begins with an examination of the nature of data in international politics. The vast scale of the subjects being analyzed presents significant challenges to accurately measuring international political data, with war being particularly difficult to assess. This raises the question of how DAC has been structured and generated. The book highlights the existence of specific international norms as a basis for DAC. It explores the history of international norms for the protection of war dead in collecting casualty information, as well as norms for civilian protection. The book posits that DAC has been generated not only by sovereign states but also by global networks comprising international organizations and NGOs. It thus analyzes the historical development of such global networks. In the latter part of the book, the methods by which global networks generate DAC are analyzed. First, it clarifies when and how statistical analysis has been used in generating DAC. Second, it elucidates when and how forensic analysis, primarily of corpses, has been employed. Thirdly, the book reveals when and how chemical weapons analysis has been utilized. This book offers a valuable investigation into the generative structure of DAC and mechanisms for ensuring compliance with international humanitarian law. It will appeal to a broad audience of policymakers, human rights activists, humanitarian practitioners, and academics.

G.D.H. Cole and British Sociology: A Study in Semi-Alienation
by Matt DawsonThis book explores G.D.H Cole’s significant yet often overlooked role in the history of British Sociology from 1920-1960. Eager to achieve a sense of scientific legitimacy following its institutionalisation in the early 1900s, British sociology had no space for a scholar like Cole, who saw sociology as an innately normative and political project which, in his case, was dedicated to the development of socialism. Conceptualising Cole's relationship to sociology as one of semi-alienation - suggesting an openness to the principles of the discipline yet disagreement with the form it takes in the current day - Dawson shows how Cole made a number of important sociological contributions which were grounded in an early form of structuration theory, including the production of one of Britain’s first sociology textbooks and an early monograph on the sociology of class. A passionate advocate for what sociology could be, Cole was a promoter of the sociological Marx and interrogator of Durkheim as part of his desire to develop sociology in Britain, including at his own institute of the University of Oxford. Cole also produced a distinctive corpus of public and creative sociology expressed in newspaper articles, poems and songs. Drawing on archival research Dawson reintegrates Cole into the history of British Sociology, and in so doing offers valuable insight into sociology's history and its contemporary form, emphasising a normative, critical and public form of the discipline.

Theorising and Designing Immersive Environments: Enchanting Spaces (Palgrave Studies in Performance and Technology)
by Ágnes-Karolina Bakk Péter Kristóf MakaiThis edited volume discusses the topic of immersion, approaching it from the perspective of various media and stakeholders: experiencers and creators. While the concept of immersion has gained widespread currency in the last decades beyond video games, its critical theory has not reached the same momentum, meaning that there is no unified way of using the term. This causes many misunderstandings and stands as an obstacle to successful expectation management processes, especially in the entertainment industry. This book presents a nuanced platform of discussion to answer the question of how immersion can manifest itself in different media, and how creators are embracing the current trends within the experience economy.

History, Politics and the Evolution of Cultivation Theory: Beyond Violence? (Palgrave Studies in the History of the Media)
by Andy RuddockThis book provides a cultural history of cultivation theory, a North American mass communication paradigm best known for arguing that television violence was a potent agent of political socialisation. Decades after its inception, cultivation theory remains an evocative force in imagining twenty-first-century media power. This book reveals how many factors shaped the theory: the spectre of twentieth-century fascism, the Cold War, political turbulence in 1960s America, and the realisation that television had profoundly altered the rhythms of social and political life. The book also explains how cultivation theory became a means of analysing diverse media influences, thanks to various scholars who brought different motivations, perspectives and skills to the project. Cultivation theory succeeded because its practitioners related their work to the changing political moods of post-war America. In doing so, they created a unique critical perspective within mass communication research, which continues to shed light on the role media play in political conflict.
Optimizing Evidence-Based Treatment for Body Dysmorphic Disorder (CBT: Science Into Practice)
by Jennifer L. Greenberg Hilary WeingardenThis book provides an understanding of body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), a psychiatric classification that is characterized by a preoccupation with a perceived or slight imperfection in physical appearance. This disorder lowers quality of life due to time-consuming compulsions intended to hide, fix, or check appearance concerns. Although relatively common, BDD is often not treated appropriately. When untreated, BDD is chronic, severe, and associated with substantial psychosocial impairment and morbidity, including unemployment rates of roughly 40-50%, suicide attempts in 22-28%, and lifetime housebound rates of roughly 30%.This book provides an overview of body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), a psychiatric classification that is characterized by excessively impaired perception of physical attributes that can lead to acute disruption of life activities. BDD is a common disorder, but few clinicians are trained in its assessment and treatment. This volume provides an evidence-based review of the literature for a greater understanding of the nature of the disorder. Most important, it demonstrates how to effectively assess and treat BDD. Evidence-based psychological and pharmacological treatments are presented, and importantly, ineffective treatments are also reviewed. To optimize CBT for BDD, guidelines are provided to address the most common challenges in diagnosis and treatment, including common comorbidities, differential diagnoses with similar disorders, safety management, addressing low insight or motivation, and modifying treatment for special populations including youth, patients from under-represented backgrounds, and BDD variants. Case examples throughout illuminate for practitioners the theoretical and clinical aspects of this complex problem. This an essential volume for practitioners and clinicians-in-training for gaining perspective on the disorder and its efficacious treatment. “Integrating research and clinical wisdom of some of the world's leading BDD experts, this book comprehensively covers the foundational as well as more nuanced approaches to treatment. Clinicians from all experience and skill levels who treat BDD will find this book to be a go-to guide to delivering high quality, evidence-based, and individually tailored care.” Jamie Feusner, MD Professor of Psychiatry, University of Toronto
Popular Memory and Franco's 'Disappeared' in Spain: Telling Stories of Mourning, Resistance, and Activism (Palgrave Macmillan Memory Studies)
by Francie Cate“Francie Cate’s Popular Memory and Franco’s ‘Disappeared’ is an obra magistral, an opus magnum, a masterwork. It is an in-depth and broad study in which further research on memory, imposed forgetting, counter-memory, and the dynamics of cultural memory will be rooted.” – Maureen Tobin Stanley, University of Minnesota Duluth, USA This book examines a "people's history" of the Spanish Civil War's anti-fascists who lost their 1936-1939 fight against far right military insurgents. The book argues that the regime’s “disappeared” have in fact since 1936 been the most visible protagonists safeguarded in the shared collective memory of the war’s losers. Narratives about Franco’s up to 150,000 civilian shooting victims—stories told in the form of memoirs, political speeches, visual art, film, novels, and oral testimonies—form the centerpiece of this study. How have these narratives told by the war’s losers--focused explicitly on the figure of the dead body—been mobilized in periods of political upheaval from 1936 to the present, including WWII; the 1950s and 60s of the Cold War; the 1970s and 80s Spanish Transition; ongoing mass media “culture wars” that have polarized the Right and the Left since public exhumations of unmarked graves began in the year 2000? Through fieldwork in the province of Cádiz, the authorhas also recorded interviews with family members of citizens who were murdered. Through oral narratives, an entire community—violently punished during the years of the dictatorship—succeeded in keeping alive an alternative history of the pre-war enterprise to establish the 1931 Spanish democratic Republic and to build a modern nation bound by constitutional law. The discursive commonalities identified in the wide-ranging testimonies—including pioneering researchers’ publications beginning in the 1970s—constitute a fascinating textual topography of popular cultural memory. This book argues that this treasure trove of storytelling preserved an initially clandestine counter narrative of anti-Francoist resistance, as well as dreams of justice for the dead.
Fire Exposures to Structural Elements (The Society of Fire Protection Engineers Series)
by Society for Fire Protection EngineersThis volume provides the information and methodology needed to predict the thermal boundary condition for a fire over time. The methods contained herein are based on experimental measurements and correlations, and mostly give global rather than local results. Eventually, computational fluid dynamics methods for fire must be subjected to some of the same tests used here and judged accordingly for accuracy and application.
