The Origin of the Subject in Psychoanalysis: Rethinking the Foundations of Lacanian Theory and Clinic (The Lines of the Symbolic in Psychoanalysis Series)
by Alfredo EidelszteinThis highly original work uses the Big Bang theory as a conceptual tool to address the question of the origin of the subject in psychoanalysis. The Origin of the Subject in Psychoanalysis elucidates the radical discontinuity between Freud and Lacan in the foundations of their psychoanalytic theories and conceptions of the clinic. Alfredo Eidelsztein argues that just as physics conceives the origin of matter, energy and space-time as an absolute beginning, so the appearance of the symbolic order and the subject must be understood as an “ex-nihilo creation” that excludes any form of causal relationship between the “before” and the “after.” He argues that this is a major conceptual difference between Freud and Lacan: the dimension of the signifier, beginning with its appearance, marks an absolute discontinuity from what was before and asserts itself as the condition from which, for the human realm, reality and experience are given. Eidelsztein’s conceptions regarding the origin of the subject, the Big Bang of language and speech, and its discontinuity with the biological body establish the basis on which the psychoanalytic clinic should be sustained.Written in clear and straightforward prose, The Origin of the Subject in Psychoanalysis will be of great interest to scholars of Lacanian psychoanalysis and to Lacanian analysts in practice and in training.
A Critical History of Contemporary Chinese Fiction (China Perspectives)
by Cheng GuangweiThis book studies the history of contemporary Chinese fiction criticism, highlighting the role of critics in shaping contemporary literary history. The author divides the history of contemporary Chinese fiction criticism into three periods: 1949–1976, 1977–1991, and 1992–2015. The first period saw the emergence of the circle of critics who insisted on judging literary works by political standards. The second period brought the rise of the Beijing Critics’ Circle and the Shanghai Critics' Circle. The former advocated “artistic standards” in judging works, while the latter introduced contemporary Western literary theories into literary criticism. The third period marked the emergence of “Scholarly Criticism,” “Criticism of Women’s Fiction,” and “Post-1960s Fiction Criticism,” reflecting critics’ attitudes toward history and philosophy. Drawing on historical materials, this study illuminates contemporary literary trends and the contributions of key writers and critics. It also relates literary criticism to the social environment, underlining the simultaneous relationship between contemporary fiction criticism and social ideology. This book will be invaluable to scholars and students of Chinese literature and literary criticism, especially those interested in the diverse landscape of contemporary Chinese culture.
Risk Communication and COVID-19: Governmental Communication and Management of Pandemic (Politics, Media and Political Communication)
by Miloš Gregor Darren Lilleker Ioana A. ComanRisk Communication and COVID-19 explores the “risk communication” responses by national governments to the outbreak and global spread of the COVID-19 strain of coronavirus. The book focuses on 17 country case studies, representing countries all around the world, covering a range of democratic and authoritarian systems, styles of leadership, and political contexts. The chapters analyze communication drawing on a modified risk communication framework to determine what patterns governmental risk communication followed in several areas: messenger attributes, consistency and clarity of communication, communication methods, message attributes, and public trust in government. The book also analyzes how these attributes changed and developed over time from 2020 to 2022. The analyzed period is divided into several parts representing different pandemic milestones, such as the first cases, the second wave of the pandemic, vaccination, and adaptation to the endemic logic of dealing with the COVID-19 virus. Importantly, the book draws out key lessons which can inform communication strategies during crises, particularly when the crisis necessitates public behavioral adjustments. The lessons are framed to further understanding of the challenges faced within the field of political risk communication during crises in the twenty-first century. This book will be of great interest to students and researchers of politics, communication, and public relations, specifically on courses and modules relating to current affairs, risk communication, crisis communication, and strategic communication, as well as practitioners working in the field of health crisis communication.

The Long Game: Sustaining a Successful Career in Teaching
by Peter FosterWhy do some teachers stay in teaching? And why do others leave? Why do some enjoy it whilst others find it an unrelenting slog? Answers to these questions are elusive but vital for new teachers, school leaders and everyone in between. Using research from wide-ranging fields and experience from real teachers, The Long Game examines how teachers can sustain and enjoy successful careers in teaching. Divided into five parts, the book explores the persistent challenges of being a teacher by breaking them down into problems and solutions. The chapters unpack the factors that get in the way of our success or enjoyment of teaching and considers the different ways these problems can be tackled, addressing key concerns, including: How to maintain motivation as you juggle work and life How to manage intensity in a non-stop job How to embed effective, long-lasting habits to save time and mental effort How to reduce workload not just ‘manage’ it How to teach successfully and have impact in a way that lasts Teaching isn’t like a game because it is frivolous or simple. But it is an infinitely layered problem we can spend our careers trying to solve. To sustain a successful and enjoyable career in teaching, we need to embed strategies and approaches that will minimise the challenges and maximise our enjoyment. The Long Game will help teachers to hold onto the joy in teaching by facing the challenges head on.
Relationality across East and West (Political Theories in East Asian Context)
by Jun-Hyeok Kwak Ken ChengThis book explores how the concept of ‘relationality’ can offer a strong basis for cross-cultural dialogue between Western and non-Western traditions of moral and political philosophy. As addressed in this book, the implications of relationality go beyond a Eurocentric binary of Western individualism and non-Western collectivism. Instead, the contributors seek to establish an appropriate discursive stance for understanding and deliberating over relationality across cultural boundaries. Through an investigation of the theoretical and practical meanings of relationality across East and West, it offers possible frameworks for reconciling the emphasis on individual choice in modern Western social and political philosophy with the amorphous dynamics of relational morality in non-Western philosophical discourses.Examining relationality in practical forms and culturally-situated contexts, rather than positing an essentialist view of the relational self, this book will be of interest to scholars in political philosophy, intellectual history, contemporary political theory and Northeast Asian regional studies.

America’s Horror Stories: U.S. History through Dark Tourism (Routledge Studies in Crime, Culture and Media)
by Kevin Revier Favian Alejandro MartínAmerica’s Horror Stories: U.S. History through Dark Tourism conducts a ghost tour(ist) methodology to explore how slavery and racism are represented in dark tourism via ghost tours. The authors travel to key sites of racist U.S. history, including Salem, Massachusetts, where a witch panic was sparked by accusations of witchcraft by Tituba, an enslaved woman practicing Voodoo; New Orleans, Louisiana, which hosts the largest slave trade market; the Myrtles Plantation in Francisville, Louisiana; and to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, where the bloodiest battle of the Civil War took place, marking a pivotal moment to end slavery in the nation—but where Confederate ghosts are said to continue roaming the town and battlefield. Acting as research ghost hunters/tourists, the authors go on walking and bus tours, visit historical monuments, stay at haunted hotels, ponder objects in haunted museums, and do some ghost hunting of their own. They find that the ghosts conjured by tour guides—ghosts of confederate soldiers, American citizens, and enslaved people—tend to whitewash, sensationalize, and commercialize the horrors of U.S. history, including slavery, racism, and colonialism. They do not discount dark tourism entirely; but recommend a ghost tour(ist) pedagogy that critically considers social issues—and structural forms of inequality—that haunt us today.America’s Horror Stories will be of great interest to students and scholars researching and taking part in critical criminology and cultural criminology courses, specifically on crime, media, and culture.
Planning Indonesia's New Capital City: Behind Nusantara (Routledge Contemporary Southeast Asia Series)
by Delik HudalahThis book critically analyzes the hidden political dimensions associated with the planning of Indonesia's new capital. Planning Indonesia’s New Capital City reveals the underlying agendas behind the Indonesian government’s decisive and rapid action, under the leadership of President Jokowi, to relocate the national capital amid precarious global political and economic conditions. The central argument posits that the capital relocation is politically justified, reflecting the president's ambitions for megaprojects and, to a significant extent, the interests of his governing coalitions. The desire to establish a political legacy has emerged as a primary hidden agenda that compels state leaders and their allies to pursue the ambitious initiative of moving the capital from Jakarta to Nusantara on Kalimantan Island. As a lasting monument and symbol of modernization and prosperity, the Capital City of Nusantara (IKN) aims to reflects the enduring influence of the builder-in-chief of the world’s third-largest democracy. The long-term viability of this capital city megaproject as a political legacy is contingent upon the effectiveness of formal, informal, and cultural institutional mechanisms both prior to and following the pivotal events of the 2024 presidential election and the subsequent transition of leadership. Addressing a significant gap in the literature and a timely contribution, this book will be of interest to researchers in the fields of human geography, Asian urban studies, Southeast Asian Studies and megaproject management.

Statistical Laws in Complex Systems: Combining Mechanistic Models and Data Analysis (Understanding Complex Systems)
by Eduardo G. AltmannThis book provides a unifying approach to the study of statistical laws, critically evaluating their role in the theoretical understanding of complex systems and the different data-analysis methods used to evaluate them. Statistical laws describe regular patterns observed in diverse scientific domains, ranging from the magnitude of earthquakes (Gutenberg-Richter law) and metabolic rates in organisms (Kleiber's law), to the frequency distribution of words in texts (Zipf's and Herdan-Heaps' laws), and productivity metrics of cities (urban scaling laws). The origins of these laws, their empirical validity, and the insights they provide into underlying systems have been subjects of scientific inquiry for centuries. Through a historical review and a unified analysis, this book argues that the persistent controversies on the validity of statistical laws are predominantly rooted not in novel empirical findings but in the discordance among data-analysis techniques, mechanistic models, and the interpretations of statistical laws. Starting with simple examples and progressing to more advanced time-series and statistical methods, this book and its accompanying repository provide comprehensive material for researchers interested in analyzing data, testing and comparing different laws, and interpreting results in both existing and new datasets.

Gender, Emotion, and the Origins of Democracy in July Monarchy France: The Liberal Crucible (Routledge Studies in Modern European History)
by Jeffrey B. HobbsThis book provides a new perspective on the historical importance of a series of provincial rebellions in France after the Revolution of 1830. It demonstrates their crucial role in the development of popular ideas about liberty and democracy in modern France.Hobbs shows how the Duchesse de Berry’s rebellion in 1832 and the Lyon insurrections of 1831 and 1834 inspired competing visions of liberty defined through discourses about gender and emotion. In particular, he illustrates how political groups, including liberals, legitimists, and republicans, used representations of gender and emotion to justify their roles in rebellions and to contest the meaning of liberty. Rather than being directly descended from liberal or republican traditions, the book argues, modern French democracy was forged as the mutual creation of these groups as they vied for political power in the nineteenth century. This volume will be of interest to scholars of modern France, the history of democracy, the history of emotions, the history of class, and the history of liberalism, as well as to graduate students studying modern Europe, liberalism, the history of emotions, class politics, and nineteenth-century royalism.
Nigerian Authors and the Me-Generation: New Shades of Black (Routledge Research in Women's Literature)
by Eugenia OssanaNigerian Authors and the Me-Generation: New Shades of Black explores African literary issues and focuses on Nigerian generations throughout history. It also underscores women authors’ relatively unknown or dispersed role and their positions regarding Western feminism. Concurrently, the book acknowledges the emergence of a current Generation called the Me-Generation, dealing with erstwhile taboo themes and genre experimentation. Three contemporary novels are singled out and analysed: My Sister, the Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite, A Small Silence by Jumoke Verissimo and Freshwater by Akwaeke Emezi. They deal with the trope of blackness as humour and satire, as a healing space and as Igbo spiritual cosmovision, which contests Western givens. This book can become a reference for those interested in African literature and, particularly, Nigerian literature. Concurrently, it can be a starting point to enrich the debate on African literature.

Thomas Gray among the Disciplines (Routledge Studies in Eighteenth-Century Literature)
by Ruth Abbott and Ephraim LevinsonThroughout the 250 years that have passed since Thomas Gray’s death, he has primarily been celebrated as a poet. This makes sense because, although he published relatively little verse, he published less – indeed, precisely nothing – of his abundant polymathic writing in other fields. His place within the history of scholarship has therefore been obscured. Like many eighteenth-century antiquaries, however, he shared his learning through correspondence and manuscript circulation and thereby influenced intellectual as well as literary life. This book explores Gray’s scholarship within the changing norms of eighteenth-century disciplines, at once locating him within histories of specialisation and examining the ways in which he challenges their narratives. Scholars from across the humanities reveal his methods and global interests and analyse many newly uncovered manuscripts. Offering fresh understanding of broader fields through focused investigation of Gray’s multidisciplinary writings, the book will appeal to scholars of eighteenth-century literary, intellectual, and scientific history.
Lithuanian Society in Transition: Social Transformations and Generational Identity (Routledge Studies in the History of Russia and Eastern Europe)
by Melanie Ilic Laima Žilinskienė Sigita KraniauskienėLithuanian Society in Transition examines the life experiences formed during the process of post-socialist transformation in Lithuania by analysing the peculiarities of the life course of the cohort of young people born between 1980 and 2000. This book considers how various different components of post-Soviet system transformation and more recent events, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, determine youth experiences and how these experiences are reflected in the generations born between 1980 and 2000. It explores how far these generations see themselves as distinct generations with distinctive identities, how far any sense of a distinctive identity is based on political criteria or on technological changes, demography, and lifestyle and how far recent geopolitical events have had an impact on the identities of these younger generations. Drawing on detailed evidence from a corpus of specially commissioned life history interviews, the individual chapters uncover self-reflexive generational identities and set these in the broader context of both specific local generational identities and more global generation identifiers. Offering a rich analysis on social change in a key post-Soviet country following the collapse of communism, this book will be useful for researchers in sociology and social policy, history, Russia and Former Soviet Union, European studies and ethnic studies.

Lebenszykluskostenbasierte Anreizsysteme für die öffentliche Beschaffung: Konzeption und Gestaltungsempfehlungen für komplexe Investitionsgüter (Supply Chain Management)
by Sven WehkingDie öffentliche Beschaffung umfasst allein in Deutschland rund 350 Mrd.
Masculinities, Migration and Inter-Generational Relations
by Katie WrightThis book examines father-son relations and their role in the transfer of forms of masculinity and fathering practices. It also explores how far the psychosocial resources transferred from fathers to sons enable sons to navigate challenges in their everyday lives, particularly in contexts of disadvantage and marginalization. This study is a successor to an earlier book examining the inter-generational transfer of human wellbeing amongst Latin American migrant women and their daughters. By extending this analysis to the case of migrant fathers and sons this book explores the impacts of international migration on constructions of masculinity and fatherhood whilst investigating the utility of resources passed intergenerationally in a different social, political and economic environment.
