Proceedings of Topical Issues in International Political Geography (Springer Geography)

by Andrei Znamenski Radomir Bolgov Vadim Atnashev Alexey Tsyb Sergey Pogodin Timo Duile Yuriy Gladkiy

This proceedings book provides selections from the 2023 Topical Issues in International Political Geography (TIPG) meeting. This gathering addresses the main issues of contemporary political geography and international relations, providing a platform for discussion and collaboration between an international array of experts primarily in the fields of political geography, geopolitics, and international relations. The first section of this volume focuses on international relations, addressing issues such as multipolarity, small states, transport cooperation, politico-geographical processes, and international security in the context of geographic space. Building on these spatially rooted themes, section two presents contributions that focus on the dual processes of globalization or regionalism. Authors of these chapters use historical frameworks to interrogate the nation state, ideology, identity, symbolisms, sovereignty, and memory. In section three, the focus narrows to specific domestic policies—such as those related to gender, public services, elections, and corruption prevention—situated in contemporary conversations about digital transformations. Section four turns to instruments of cultural policy, examining tourism and (in a new addition in response to developments in the field) education. Similarly, section five introduces a theme new to the conference: migration and socio-demographic processes. These chapters evaluate national, regional, and local aspects of migration and multiculturalism. The final section turns to the still-pressing theme of sustainable development, taking up case studies of nations and international organizations grappling with questions about sustainable growth, political ecology, and environmental culture. The content of the book will be interesting to experts, academics, and students.

Manual of Head and Neck Reconstruction: A Step-by-Step Guide

by Fiyin Sokoya Aurora G. Vincent

This text will deliver revolutionary approaches to reconstructive surgery in a clear and consistent format. Head and neck reconstruction has long been thought to be a daunting, intimidating, and tedious field of surgery. Microvascular head and neck reconstruction is one of the most advanced surgical options available for reconstruction. It is used to treat defects created by removal of tissue in the larynx, pharynx, oral cavity, salivary glands, tongue, and skin. It is also utilized in combination with chemotherapy and radiation for the treatment of head and neck cancer. Due to the disfiguring nature of the removal of these tissues, microvascular reconstruction is important to return the face, head, and neck to as normal as possible. This text reviews cutting edge surgical skills in head and neck oncologic surgery and facial plastic and reconstructive surgery. The Manual of Head and Neck Reconstruction will include step-by-step guides, with clear, illustrated, coverage of regional and distant cutaneous, muscular, osseus flaps, donor site harvest and transfer for head and neck reconstruction. The book will discuss relevant anatomy, nuances of flap design, harvesting techniques, insetting, ideal locations of flap use, and flap combinations. It will also discuss preoperative preparations, intraoperative considerations, techniques for avoiding pitfalls, and managing postoperative complications. There will be intraoperative pictures walking the audience through the surgeries in a detailed fashion, with the goal of imparting an efficient, effective surgical philosophy. Exclusively to this text, the topic of surgical maneuvers designed to improve surgical efficiency and save hours of intraoperative time, limiting patient’s time under anesthesia, will be discussed. This book was authored by experts in head and neck reconstruction trained by Dr. Yadro Ducic over the past 12 years. It is a great resource for many surgeons in the field of otolaryngology-head/neck surgery.

Surrender Is Not an Option: Defending America at the United Nations

by John Bolton

With no-holds-barred candor, Donald Trump's new National Security Adviser and former ambassador to the United Nations takes us behind the scenes at the UN and the US State Department and reveals why his efforts to defend American interests and reform the UN resulted in controversy. He also shows how the US can lead the way to a more realistic global security arrangement for the twenty-first century and identifies the next generation of threats to America. In this revealing memoir, John Bolton recounts his appointment in 2005 as Ambassador to the United Nations, his headline-making Senate confirmation battle, and his sixteen-month tenure at the United Nations. Bolton offers keen insight into such international crises as North Korea's nuclear test, Iran's pursuit of nuclear weapons, the genocide in Darfur, the negotiation that produced the controversial end of hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah, and more. Chronicling both his successes and frustrations in taking a hard line against weapons-of-mass-destruction proliferators, terrorists, and rogue states such as North Korea and Iran, he also exposes the operational inadequacies that hinder the UN's effectiveness in international diplomacy and its bias against Israel and the United States. At home, he criticizes the bureaucratic inertia in the US State Department that can undermine presidential policy. This fascinating chronicle of the career of one of America's outstanding statesmen who has fought to preserve American sovereignty and strength at home and abroad now contains a new afterword, "Challenges for the Next President."

What's the Matter with White People?: Finding Our Way in the Next America

by Joan Walsh

A CLEAR-EYED, COGENT CLARION CALL FOR ENDING THE DIVISIVE CLASS WARS THAT THREATEN THE AMERICAN MIDDLE-CLASS DREAM In What’s the Matter with White People? Walsh argues that the biggest divide in America today is based not on party or ideology but on two competing explanations for why middle-class stability has been shaken since the 1970s. One side sees an America that has spent the last forty years bankrupting the country by providing benefits for the underachieving, the immoral, and the undeserving—no matter the cost to the majority of Americans. The other side sees an America that has spent the last forty years catering to the wealthy while allowing only a nominal measure of progress for the downtrodden. Using her extended Irish-Catholic working-class family as a case in point and explaining her own political coming-of-age, Walsh shows how liberals unwittingly collaborated in the “us versus them” narrative and how the GOP’s renewed culture war now scapegoats segments of its own white demographic. Part memoir, part political history, What’s the Matter with White People? is essential reading to combat political and cultural polarization and to build a more just and prosperous multiracial America in the years to come.
