Globalisation and Multicultural Education (Globalisation, Comparative Education and Policy Research #47)
by Joseph Zajda Suzanne MajhanovichThis book analyses dominant discourses of globalisation, multiculturalism and schooling. The chapters advance further the discussions on globalisation and its impact on cultural diversity and multiculturalism in a globalised world. Multicultural education, as presented in this volume, is seen in a broad context. It includes factors such as race, ethnicity, gender, socio-economic status, culture, age, and physical ability, as well as a variety of beliefs and values. Zajda has argued that globalisation represents a synthesis of technology, ideology, and organisation, specifically related to border crossings of people, global finance, trade, IT convergence, as well as cross-cultural communication. The reality of multiculturalism has been brought into stronger focus because of globalisation. Multiculturalism is more evident today because of globalisation. The book contributes in a very scholarly way, to a more holistic understanding of the nexus between globalisation and dominant models of multicultural education, and their impact on students’ engagement, and academic achievement.

The Resilience of the Hungarian Legal System since 2010: A Failed Resilience? (European Union and its Neighbours in a Globalized World #16)
by Fruzsina Gárdos-OroszThis open access book explains the factors that cause the poor functioning or failure of certain legal institutions or the success of others in the current Hungarian legal system after the 2010 transition from liberal to illiberal/populist democracy. The authors argue in most regulatory areas that reform is needed in lawmaking or in the application and practice of law, because there are systemic problems with the law’s capacity for doctrinal resilience, which lead to the primacy of other regulators than law, such as the populist politics. An understanding of these processes is essential for the implementation of sound law and legal policy reforms, for the maintenance of the legal guarantee system and for the successful development of institutions protecting and providing the fundamental rights. The volume documents how the Hungarian legal system changed after 2010, on the one hand, and conceptualises these changes with the help of ‘resilience’, on the other hand.
Attracting African States Participation in a Multilateral Investment Court: Reforming Substantive and Procedural Law through an MIC (European Yearbook of International Economic Law #39)
by Afolabi Oluwatomiwa AdekemiThis book delves into the intricacies of encouraging African states' participation in a Multilateral Investment Court (MIC), set against the backdrop of their experiences with international investment agreements and the Investor-State Dispute Settlement (ISDS) system. It tackles the pervasive issues within the existing ISDS framework, emphasising the critical standpoint of African states on the desired ISDS reform. The text unpacks the foundational standards of treatment—such as Fair and Equitable Treatment (FET), guarantees against expropriation, and the Full Protection and Security (FPS) standard—highlighting how they are commonly invoked against African nations. Through detailed analysis, the book exposes the inherent challenges these standards pose to the sovereignty and regulatory autonomy of African states, particularly in contexts that demand sustainable development and public interest considerations. The book critically evaluates the proposed MIC as a reformative alternative to traditional ISDS mechanisms, scrutinising its potential to address the substantive and procedural grievances that have historically disadvantaged African states within the global investment arbitration landscape. It proposes a nuanced framework for reform that aligns with the developmental aspirations and legal traditions of African countries. By providing in-depth insights into the procedural and substantive dimensions of international investment law from an African perspective, the work advocates for a balanced approach that respects the regulatory prerogatives of states while ensuring fair protection of foreign investments. The book stresses the importance of this balanced approach, which is crucial for attracting African states' participation in a future MIC. The target audience for this comprehensive monograph includes legal academics, practitioners, law students, and other enthusiasts of international investment law and its emerging reforms. Through its detailed examination of the challenges and opportunities within the current ISDS system, the book offers valuable perspectives for those engaged in the discourse on international investment law's evolution in response to the global backlash against traditional ISDS.
Supermicrosurgical Lymphaticovenular Anastomosis
by Giuseppe Visconti Akitatsu Hayashi Johnson Chia-Shen YangThe supermicrosurgical procedure known as Lymphaticovenular Anastomosis, or LVA, is a minimally invasive physiologic surgical treatment of lymphedema, which has gained attention worldwide in recent years as technical limitations were overcome and surgical indications can now apply to a larger set of patients with lymphatic disease. Complex advanced-stage lymphedema cases and patients with lymphorrea still have functional lymphatic channels, and could benefit from lymphaticovenular anastomosis. The latest technologies, such as ultrahigh frequency ultrasound, allow now to perform a detailed preoperative planning, improving efficacy and reliability of the intervention. Additional technologies that are available, as for example Rest-Stress Lymphoscintigraphy, Laser Tomography and Photoacoustic Imaging are also presented in the book, as all concur to build a complete preoperative and intraoperative set of information. Supermicrosurgical Lymphaticovenular Anastomosis is ahandy, one-of-a-kind guide built on the experience of contributors that are experts in this highly specialized field, while presenting topics in a clear and complete fashion, with the support of over 240 illustrations and chapter-related videos for a thorough understanding of preparatory steps and microsurgical techniques. This volume will be a valued companion to the modern microsurgeon dealing with lymphedema who wants to refine supermicrosurgical skills but also be of interest for professionals to gain insight in latest and more traditional technologies, through the related dedicated chapters and videos.
Closing the Gap: Enhancing the Implementation of Sustainable Development through International Investment Law (SpringerBriefs in Law)
by Marina-Elissavet KonstantinidiThis book examines the applicability of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals within the framework of International Investment Law, assessing its effectiveness and identifying areas in need for reform. It aims to contribute to a strategic approach for sustainable development in the era of globalization, addressing pressing social concerns. More specifically, this book explores if and how the tools offered by international investment law can be utilized to advance the principles of sustainable development. The study further investigates how the notion of sustainable development affects the arguments regarding the existence of a protected investment, and potential violations of investment treaty clauses concerning, namely, the fair and equitable treatment standard, illegal expropriation and umbrella clauses. It aims to provide suggestions for reform, focusing on the creation of preventive mechanisms, in addition to existing repressive ones. The above-mentioned issues have direct influence on key areas of public interest, such as environmental protection and public health, which ar integral to sustainable development. It is crucial to ensure that investment protection does not come at the expense of the above, and international investment law can rather be used as a tool for positive change at a global scale. It is, therefore, of utmost importance to identify existing conflicts in the field and raise concerns, in order to achieve a balance of interests between States and investors, and take a step closer to the realization of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Why Read Hannah Arendt Now?
by Richard J. BernsteinRecently there has been an extraordinary international revival of interest in Hannah Arendt. She was extremely perceptive about the dark tendencies in contemporary life that continue to plague us. She developed a concept of politics and public freedom that serves as a critical standard for judging what is wrong with politics today. Richard J. Bernstein argues that Arendt should be read today because her penetrating insights help us to think about both the darkness of our times and the sources of illumination. He explores her thinking about statelessness and refugees; the right to have rights; her critique of Zionism; the meaning of the banality of evil; the complex relations between truth, lying, power, and violence; the tradition of the revolutionary spirit; and the urgent need for each of us to assume responsibility for our political lives. This short and very readable book will be of great interest to anyone who wants to understand the forces that are shaping our world today.
Mathematical Theory of Fuzzy Sets

Critical Intercultural Perspectives on Higher Education: Characterizing, Critiquing and Unsettling Internationalization (New Perspectives on Teaching Interculturality)
by Fred DervinThis edited volume interrogates the meanings of internationalization in higher education in different political-economic contexts.Written by multidisciplinary scholars based in different parts of the world (China, Finland, France, Korea, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Spain, UK, USA), the chapters allow the reader to critically ‘listen in’ on glocalized (global + local) discourses of internationalization in education (meanings, epistemologies, critiques and current research/policies). The volume aims to support students and scholars in clarifying for themselves and others what internationalization might mean and entail, using alternative ways of characterizing, critiquing and unsettling internationalization. The authors adopt critical intercultural perspectives in their chapters, based, for example, on humanistic entry points, the continuum of ideological specificities-commonalities, while balancing self-other (acceptance, rejection), questioning the 'taken for granted' and offering some decolonial analyses and reflections. The volume thus aims to better understand and nuance the polysemic and glocalized nature of internationalization in order to strengthen international cooperation in education (research) and to provide more opportunities to come together to recognize and support, for example, multiple perspectives, experiences and knowledge.Scholars, students and education professionals interested in higher education, intercultural studies and topics of internationalization and globalization will greatly benefit from the book.

Handbook of Bloodstain Pattern Analysis
by Toby L. WolsonThe Handbook of Bloodstain Pattern Analysis captures the latest understanding of the science that supports bloodstain pattern analysis (BPA) and includes the results of numerous research studies using modern technologies not found in previously published books. It provides the BPA community with a modern, up-to-date reference and training manual to outline and validate the utility, repeatability, and reliability of BPA science.BPA has recently been presented in the news media as an example of “junk” science used in a handful of cases involving wrongful convictions. However, the reality is that the primary issue for BPA in these wrongful convictions is not the science: it is the result of substandard training and the lack of experience of BPA analysts, prior to beginning casework and testifying in court as experts. As such, this book is written to serve as an essential study guide for analysts preparing to sit for the International Association for Identification (IAI) Bloodstain Pattern Analyst Certification exam. The contents of the book are guided by the ANSI/ASB Standards for a Bloodstain Pattern Analysis Training Program. Each chapter has been written by top experts conversant on the relevant BPA, BPA terminology, forensic science, physics, fluid dynamics, crime scene analysis, education/training, bias, and current relevant legal considerations for use of BPA in court.Handbook of Bloodstain Pattern Analysis is the most up-to-date resource on BPA currently available, providing a definitive training manual for practitioners, and an essential reference for forensic pathologists, police investigators, crime scene investigators, attorneys, and students enrolled in forensic science university courses.

Translators on Translation: Portraits of the Art
by Kelly WashbourneThis is a book in pursuit of translators’ philosophies or personal theories of translation. From Vladimir Nabokov and William Carlos Williams to Ursula K. Le Guin and Langston Hughes, Translators on Translation coaxes each subject’s reflections on their art, their particular view of translation, and how they carry out their specific form of translation. The translators’ intellectual biographies expand our understanding of their views, often in their own words, on the aesthetic, political, and philosophical nature of translation; lend insight into their translation decision-making on specific works; afford critical summaries and contextualizations of their key theoretical and theoretico-practical works; unearth their figurative conceptualizations of translation; and construct their subject identities. As a person’s body of work can be diffuse, scattered, fragmentary, and contradictory, inner lives have to be constructed and reconstructed. Through a recovery and narrativizing of their writing and speaking on translation, their interviews, paratextual commentary, letters, lecture notes, and even fiction and poetry, these late twentieth-century subjects answer the question, What is translation to you?The book is supported by additional translators’ profiles and selected translations on the Routledge Translation Studies portal. Translators on Translation is key reading for courses on translation practice, translation history, translation theory, and creative writing courses that engage in translation while also being vital reading for practicing literary translators.
Uncertainty in Comparative Law and Legal History: Known Unknowns (Transforming Legal Histories)
by Andrew J. Bell and Joanna McCunnLaws are imposed on facts. But what is the law to do when its rules for establishing facts do not—because they cannot—produce a satisfactory answer? Scenarios that raise this intractable uncertainty problem have been treated as isolated concerns, but are in fact endemic across legal systems. They can cross jurisdictional and doctrinal boundaries, have recurred throughout history, and demand creative thinking from those faced with them. This book explores the law’s understandings of and responses to such situations from a comparative historical perspective. It investigates how the law has framed these most difficult problems of uncertainty; dealt with uncertainty’s often unclear boundaries; and developed a broad range of different responses to solve or avoid it, across doctrine, time, and jurisdiction. The work examines a selection of key uncertainty problems across private law as elements of a singular uncertainty issue endemic in legal systems. This analysis will be of interest to historians and comparatists, but also to doctrinal, theoretical, and other scholars and practitioners. The analysis leaves us better informed and better equipped for dealing with future scenarios where uncertainty arises, including insights beyond national and doctrinal confines.
