Romans Through the Centuries (Wiley Blackwell Bible Commentaries)

by Paul S. Fiddes

Presents a theological, literary, and cultural reading of Romans across the centuries of Christian thought Romans Through the Centuries offers a groundbreaking commentary that invites readers to engage with the Apostle Paul's letter not only as a theological text but also as a dynamic and evolving voice that resonates across history and culture. In a format that reflects the complexity of both the letter itself and its enduring legacy, Paul S. Fiddes divides each passage into three distinct yet interconnected lenses: Paul's own speaking voice as he dictated the letter, the rich tradition of its interpretation through major historical epochs, and its influence on literature, visual art, and socio-political thought. This commentary is distinctive in tracing Paul's argument as a “mind in motion,” acknowledging the oral nature of the letter's composition and offering a literary reading that takes seriously the nuances of thought developed in conversation. Fiddes brings theological voices from early Christianity, the medieval West, the Reformation, and contemporary global scholarship into dialogue, providing a comprehensive reception history without overshadowing Paul's original voice. In its final movement, the commentary broadens further, illuminating how Romans has shaped the cultural imagination beyond ecclesial contexts. A flexible and deeply informed guide to Paul's most influential letter, Romans Through the Centuries: Integrates literary analysis with theological exegesis, treating Paul's letter as an evolving, spoken argument Provides readers with flexible entry points to focus on theological development, historical context, or cultural relevance Features a wide-ranging reception history from Patristic writers to twenty-first-century global scholars Includes cultural case studies in literature, visual art, and political discourse influenced by Romans Incorporates the most current scholarship on Romans and critically engages with alternative readings Part of the acclaimed Wiley Blackwell Bible Commentaries series, Romans Through the Centuries is an essential resource for those seeking to understand the layered legacy of Romans through theological inquiry, literary insight, and historical perspectives. It is well-suited for undergraduate and postgraduate courses in New Testament studies, Pauline theology, and the cultural reception of Scripture, and serves as a valuable resource for clergy, scholars, and advanced students engaged in research.

Russian Warfare in the 21st Century: An Incentive-Opportunity Intervention Model (Routledge Studies in Security and Conflict Management)

by Dani Belo

This book provides a comprehensive analysis of Russia's foreign policy in gray zone conflicts, with a particular focus on its interventions in Ukraine.Challenging conventional views, the book contends that Russia's use of varied gray zone tactics is influenced by both system-level incentives and domestic-level opportunities, which are integrated here into the Incentive-Opportunity Intervention (IOI) Model. The book examines case studies including Abkhazia, Crimea, Odesa, Kharkiv, and the Donbas, demonstrating how local ethnic-based movements and perceptions of regional retreat shape Moscow's coercive strategies. It highlights the reactive nature of Russia's tactics, driven by perceived threats to its protector role, and the significant role of ethnic and political dynamics in the region. The study underscores the importance of understanding these motivations for effective conflict resolution and suggests that protecting minority rights could mitigate such interventions. Policy recommendations emphasize the need for nuanced approaches that address both geopolitical and local dynamics. Ultimately, the book calls for future research to apply the IOI Model to other great powers, enhance the generalizability and applicability of the findings, and highlight the potential for multilateral coordination in promoting minority rights as a strategy for conflict prevention. This book will be of much interest to students and policy practitioners working on Russian foreign policy, international security, Eastern European politics, and International Relations

Scientific Research and Methodology: An Introduction to Quantitative Research and Statistics

by Peter K. Dunn

This textbook is designed for teaching quantitative research in the scientific, health and engineering disciplines at first-year undergraduate level, with an emphasis on statistics. It covers the research process, including asking research questions, research design, data collection, summarising data, analysis and communication. Many real journal articles are used throughout the text as examples that demonstrate the use of the techniques.Students are introduced to statistics as a method for answering questions. Descriptive research questions lead to analysis of single proportions and means. Repeated-measures research questions are answered using paired quantitative data. Relational research questions compare proportions, odds and means in different groups. Correlational research questions are studied using correlation and regression techniques.Statistical topics include numerical summary methods (such as means, odds ratios and identification of outliers), graphing (such as histograms, case-profile plots and scatterplots), confidence intervals and hypothesis testing. Emphasis is placed on understanding and concepts; while calculations are shown in simple situations, they are deferred to software when the computations become tedious and disruptive to understanding.Almost every dataset used is a real dataset, and is available online or in an associated R package SRMData. Software output is often used when calculations become onerous. The output is sufficiently generic that the book can be used in conjunction with any statistical software.

Securing Talent: Building and Retaining High-Performance Cybersecurity Teams (Security, Audit and Leadership Series)

by Kevin Lynn McLaughlin

Securing Talent: Building and Retaining High-Performance Cybersecurity Teams by Dr. Kevin Lynn McLaughlin offers a comprehensive and insightful exploration into the critical role culture plays in the cybersecurity field.Dr. McLaughlin, drawing from his extensive experience in cybersecurity leadership and risk management, addresses the acute shortage of cybersecurity professionals and underscores the importance of a supportive work environment in attracting and retaining top talent. The book begins with a personal anecdote illustrating the significant impact of organizational culture on employee engagement and leadership development. It then delves into the global scarcity of cybersecurity professionals, intensified by the increasing complexity of cyber threats and rapid technological advancements. This shortage poses a considerable risk to organizations across industries, making them vulnerable to data breaches, reputational damage, and significant economic losses. Dr. McLaughlin emphasizes the necessity of creating a positive and rewarding workplace environment to not only attract but also retain skilled professionals. The book discusses various factors contributing to the lack of qualified individuals in the field, such as inadequate investment in cybersecurity education and limited opportunities for skill development. Dr. McLaughlin argues that the high-stress nature of cybersecurity work, demanding long hours and intense focus, can deter potential talent. He advocates for investment in training programs, cultivation of the next generation of cybersecurity experts, and the creation of a workplace culture conducive to professional growth and satisfaction.

Seeking Societal Symbiosis for the Sustainable Use of Materials

by Mark Everard

‘Crucially, this book bridges a gap in our understanding of how different societal sectors can be united to define roles, identify shared interests and devise strategies that complement progress towards more sustainable material use. This message will be of particular interest to the chemical industry as it seeksnew pathways towards a cyclical economy.’ – Dr Simon Vandestadt, Director, Senior Executive and Researcher, Specialist in peace, conflict and sustainability, Pacific and Papua New GuineaWe live in a material world – one with a rising population dependent upon a base of natural resources that is already seriously depleted and declining rapidly. This book considers the societal use of materials: historically, in the less-than-optimal present and aspirationally as a central thread in addressing wider sustainable development challenges. It accounts for linked chemical, physical and socio-economic consequences right through value chains, from raw material extraction through manufacture and use and onwards to post-use.The author, Mark Everard, proposes that the four principal societal sectors – business, government, civil society organisations and knowledge-providers – though often currently dissipating effort by working antagonistically, can optimally work symbiotically around co-created and consensual long-term sustainability goals to accelerate necessary progress. Practical examples of ‘baby steps’ towards constructive collaboration within and between societal sectors are recognised, and lessons are drawn for how they can shape more committed and intentional collaboration for sustainable development.Seeking Societal Symbiosis touches upon many aspects of science – from chemistry, chemical engineering and material science, through to construction/built environment, sustainability, regulatory science, resources economics and social science. It will be valuable reading for industry managers and executives, the European Commission and MEPs, other national regulators and legislators, university students and lecturers, and NGOs.
