This is Ancient Philosophy: An Introduction (This is Philosophy)
by Kirk FitzpatrickTHIS IS ANCIENT PHILOSOPHY “A masterful introduction to ancient philosophy. Fitzpatrick knows the contemporary scholarship on these authors, so he can shift from summarizing their thought to scrutinizing individual arguments. Meanwhile the writing remains so accessible that a reader might not notice how much he covers. The prose is precise but relaxed, with details that enrich the texture: the Pythagoreans’ harmonies, the Stoic Horned Argument, Antisthenes’ daily walk to Socrates. Students and instructors alike will benefit.” —Nickolas Pappas, Professor at City College of New York (CUNY) This Is Ancient Philosophy is a fascinating introduction to the major philosophers and foundational concepts of classical antiquity. Assuming no prior knowledge, the book uses an intuitive, readable narrative style as it examines the ideas, influences, and interconnections of philosophers such as Socrates, the Sophists, Plato, and Aristotle, as well as philosophical schools of thought including Cynicism, Epicureanism, Stoicism, and Skepticism. Divided into three parts, the book opens with an overview of early Greek philosophy, describing the turn from mythological thinking to philosophical analysis. The second part focuses on the distinctions between the subjects of philosophy in both the Golden Age and today, followed by a survey of the Hellenistic period and a discussion of the relation between fate and freedom of action. Throughout, readers are aided by a wealth of instructive and engaging charts, grids, figures, and a detailed map illustrating the chronological development of philosophy, from Asia Minor to southern Italy and Athens. Part of the popular This Is Philosophy series, This Is Ancient Philosophy is an excellent text for students of philosophy, both introductory and advanced, and general readers with interest in the philosophy of the classical era.

Thom Gunn: A Cool Queer Life
by Michael NottA no-holds-barred biography of the great poet and sexual rebel, who could “give the dead a voice, make them sing” (Hilton Als, The New Yorker). Thom Gunn was not a confessional poet, and he withheld much, but inseparable from his rigorous, formal poetry was a ravenous, acute experience of life and death. Raised in Kent, England, and educated at Cambridge, Gunn found a home in San Francisco, where he documented the city’s queerness, the hippie mentality (and drug use) of the sixties, and the tragedy and catastrophic impact of the AIDS crisis in the eighties and beyond. As Jeremy Lybarger wrote in The New Republic, the author of Moly and The Man with Night Sweats was “an agile poet who renovated tradition to accommodate the rude litter of modernity.” Thom Gunn: A Cool Queer Life chronicles, for the first time, the largely undocumented life of this revolutionary poet. Michael Nott, a coeditor of The Letters of Thom Gunn, draws on letters, diaries, notebooks, interviews, and Gunn’s poetry to create a portrait as vital as the man himself. Nott writes with insight and intimacy about the great sweep of Gunn’s life: his traditional childhood in England; his mother’s suicide; the mind-opening education he received at Cambridge, reading Shakespeare and John Donne; his decades in San Francisco and with his life partner, Mike Kitay; and his visceral experience of sex, drugs, and loss. Thom Gunn: A Cool Queer Life is a long-awaited, landmark study of one of England and America’s most innovative poets.
Thomas Aquinas: Summa Theologiae 1a2ae 22-48
by Robert MinerThomas Aquinas's Questions on the passions form part of the Summa Theologiae, Aquinas's best-known work. This first standalone edition shows, through a translation that is both rigorously accurate and mirrors the rapid tempo of Aquinas's Latin, what Aquinas says in his landmark treatment of the passions. Aquinas sets the parameters and terms of debate for numerous later theorists of the passions, including Descartes, Hobbes, Spinoza and Hume. Some have alleged that Paul and later Christians have (in Nietzsche's words) “an evil eye for the passions,” judging them as 'dirty, disfiguring and heartbreaking'. Yet readers of the present translation will perceive that Aquinas regards the passions as part of created nature, and thereby good in their essence. As they encounter Aquinas's treatment, they will also deepen their knowledge of particular passions-including love, hatred, desire, aversion, pleasure, sorrow, hope, despair, fear, and anger.
Thomas Keating: The Making of a Modern Christian Mystic
by Cynthia BourgeaultThe first portrait of spiritual luminary Thomas Keating&’s remarkable evolution, in the last decades of his life, into a fully realized modern-day Christian mystic. In the first four decades of his life as a Trappist monk, Thomas Keating created a comprehensive, unified psychospiritual pathway leading from healing to holiness and from contemporary psychological wellness to classic mystical sanctity and beatitude. As one of the key innovators of the meditative practice of Centering Prayer, he fashioned a powerful on-ramp to the Christian contemplative tradition. Yet, as beloved author and Keating disciple Cynthia Bourgeault shows, that was not the end of Keating&’s story—his evolution as a spiritual thinker and mystic continued in ways few have explored in depth. In this unique blend of biography, personal experience, and close reading of his late works, Bourgeault illuminates Keating&’s remarkable spiritual development from the late 1980s until his death in 2018. She explores: Keating&’s increasing engagement with nondual spiritual practice His contributions to interspiritual dialogue The evolution of his early teaching on the movement from &“false self&” to &“true self,&” to that from &“true self&” to &“no self&” His final &“dark night of the spirit&” and passage through death New evidence that he never left Christianity but carried it with him to new places These profound final stages of Keating&’s spiritual journey demonstrate how readers might find their own way as modern mystics, fundamentally at home and at peace in the universe.
Thomas Kyd: A Dramatist Restored
by Brian VickersA groundbreaking new account of the author of The Spanish Tragedy that establishes him as a major Elizabethan dramatistThomas Kyd (1558–1594) was a highly regarded dramatist and the author of The Spanish Tragedy, the first revenge tragedy and the most influential Elizabethan play. In this first full study of his life and works, Brian Vickers discusses Kyd&’s accepted canon as well as three additional plays Vickers has newly identified as having been written by Kyd—exciting discoveries that establish him as a major dramatist.Thomas Dekker, a fellow Elizabethan dramatist, referred to &“industrious Kyd,&” which suggests a greater output than the three plays traditionally attributed to him—The Spanish Tragedy, Soliman and Perseda, and Cornelia. Kyd worked between 1585 and 1594, when the plague led to the anonymous publication of many plays because of the breakup of several London theatre companies. Researching this corpus, Vickers has identified Kyd&’s authorship of three more plays: Arden of Faversham, the first domestic tragedy, King Leir and his three daughters, a tragicomedy that provided Shakespeare with his main source, and Fair Em, a love comedy. These attributions are based on two forms of evidence: unique similarities of plot between Kyd&’s acknowledged and newly attributed plays and many unique phrases shared by all six plays as identified by modern software.Discussing all the plays in detail and placing them in biographical and historical context, Thomas Kyd offers a major reassessment of an underappreciated Elizabethan playwright.
Thor the Walrus, A Story You Will Never Thaw-get
by Valerie McGurkThe water is getting warmer, and the ice cap is melting. Thor, the walrus, is at risk of losing his homeland. Thor lives in the seasonally ice-covered waters of the Arctic Circle with his mother, his friends, and the elders. The ice is brittle and breaks easily. Thor hears the elders talk about climate change and wonders what it means. Being named after the god of thunder, Thor decides he is a brave walrus who will one day embark on an adventure to explore far-off lands to find out more. One night, the ice breaks, and Thor floats away, leaving his mother, his friends, the elders, and his homeland behind. Thor’s adventure has begun. As he enters warmer waters, his floating iceberg gradually melts until it disappears. Thor is on his own and swims for hours, looking for food and a place to rest. He visits coastal villages and a herring festival where the air is thick with the smell of fish. Every time Thor stops to rest and regain his strength, a crowd gathers, and Thor wonders why. He feels lost and alone, listening to the crowds. People were excited to see him. Men in orange coats kept the crowds at bay, but Thor was never far from the water’s edge and would grunt if people came too near. He kept hearing the words ‘global warming,’ ‘climate,’ and ‘change.’ If people didn’t act, his homeland would be lost. Thor decided that his journey could make a difference. While he majestically and playfully showed himself off, he hoped that Thor the walrus would never be thaw-forgotten.

Thoracoscopic Repair of Esophageal Atresia
by Ravi P KanojiaEsophageal atresia is a common neonatal emergency, and surgical repair in the newborn period is conventionally achieved by thoracotomy. With the development in pediatric minimal access surgery, esophageal atresia repair has been done with thoracoscopy after its first description in 1999. Many centers now prefer the thoracoscopic approach, which is claimed to be beneficial in terms of outcome both in the short and long term. Neonatal thoracoscopy is a difficult procedure and has a long learning curve. It requires a team approach with a competent anesthetist and surgical assistant. A surgeon alone cannot accomplish this procedure. This book presents comprehensive details on the procedure of thoracoscopic repair of esophageal atresia. The chapters sequentially explain all the procedure steps, from setup, instrumentation, patient selection, and ergonomics to detailed stepwise descriptions of the operative procedure. Since esophageal atresia can have so many variations in anatomy, the chapters cover how to tackle these variations. To keep the reader's interest, a detailed review of history and current literature, along with controversies, is presented. Interested readers will start from the history as the first chapter and can go through the descriptions of the entire procedure from start to finish. Any Pediatric surgery trainee interested in Pediatric Minimal access discipline will find this book as a one-stop resource on everything he wants to know about Thoracoscopic repair of esophageal atresia. The book also includes coverage of non-surgical aspects such as anesthesia and ventilation and effects on cerebral oxygenation during thoracoscopy. The book provides easy-to-understand English and is richly supplemented with illustrations and high-resolution operative photographs. Video clips also supplement the text wherever an operative step is explained. These videos are linked to the publisher’s website for easy access.
