The Reputations of Thomas Moore: Poetry, Music and Politics (Poetry and Song in the Age of Revolution)

This collection of eleven essays positions Moore within a developing and expanding international readership during the course of the nineteenth century. In accounting for the successes he achieved and the challenges he faced, recurring themes include: Moore’s influence and reputation; modes of dissemination through networks and among communities; also, the articulation of personal, political, and national identities. This book, the product of an international team of scholars, is the first to focus explicitly on the reputations of Thomas Moore in different parts of the world, including Bombay, Dublin, Leipzig, and London, as well as America, Canada, Greece, and the Hispanic world. Through it, we will understand more about Moore’s reception, and also appreciate how the publication and dissemination of poetry and song in the romantic and Victorian eras operated in different parts of the world—in particular considering how artistic and political networks effected the transmission of cultural products.

This is an open access book. The 3rd Universitas Lampung International Conference on Social Sciences (ULICoSS) 2022 (ULICoSS) 2022 is an international conference organized by the Institute for Research and Community Services, Universitas Lampung, Indonesia. The event took place on 6th – 7th September 2022 in Bandar Lampung City, on the Indonesian island of Sumatra. This event will adopt a hybrid working model, combining an in-person event with an online meeting via Zoom. Attendees and presenters are expected to interact in this way, using technology to connect to global networks. As has been widely stated in the literature, a number of reports and papers have examined the pandemic’s negative effects, with the majority of work to date focusing on COVID-19’s negative impact on psychological well-being. Thus, social adjustment is required for resilience in order to adapt to and change in the face of adversity. In other words, it is clear that social adjustment, which includes the specific behaviors and abilities that people use to deal with daily problems and adapt to changing circumstances, is critical for global resilience today. As such, this international conference, which will feature five invited keynote speakers from the Czech Republic, Hungary, Indonesia, and Japan is intended to serve as a forum for the dissemination of specific alternative and significant breakthroughs in rapid social adjustments for global resilience, with an emphasis on global society, social welfare and development, and innovative communication, among other topics. Therefore, we invite scholars, academics, researchers, experts, practitioners, and university students to participate and share perspectives, experiences, and research findings by submitting papers on a variety of topics relevant to the conference’s theme and scope. Developmental Biology in Prokaryotes and Lower Eukaryotes

‘Developmental biology’ is widely understood as processes, which mainly concern embryonic animal development and differentiation of cells and tissue. It is also often defined as the timeline for the evolutionary developmental biology of eukaryotic multicellular higher organisms, i.e., plants and animals. The development of prokaryotes and lower eukaryotes in contrary has been neglected for a long time, which was the motivation for publishing this book. This book highlights one of Darwin's most important findings: Evolution is a creative, but not a conscious process. It also illustrates that this concept does not only apply to multicellular higher organisms, but affects every form of life.The reader shall find complex biochemical and genetic pathways of bacteria, yeasts or protozoa, comparable to those exhibited by plants or animals. The molecular mechanisms of dramatic genome rearrangements, recombination and horizontal gene transfer that are responsible for evolutionary adaptations are discussed. Additionally, the book covers bacteria of the genera Myxobacteriales and Caulobacterales, which are able to develop tissue-like cellular organization. The morphogenesis of entomopathogenic fungi and the endosymbiont theory are also addressed. The book is a useful introduction to the field for junior scientists, interested in bacteriology, protistology and fungal development. It is also an interesting read for advanced scientists, giving them a broader view of the field beyond their area of specialization.

Constructing Destruction: Heritage Narratives in the Tsunami City (UCL Institute of Archaeology Critical Cultural Heritage Series)

Large-scale disasters mobilize heritage professionals to a narrative of heritage-at-risk and a standardized set of processes to counter that risk. Trinidad Rico’s critical ethnography analyses heritage practices in the aftermath of the tsunami that swamped Banda Aceh, Indonesia, in 2004 and the post-destruction narratives that accompanied it, showing the sociocultural, historical, and political agendas these discourses raise. Countering the typical Western ideology and practice of ameliorating heritage-at-risk were local, post-colonial trajectories that permitted the community to construct its own meaning of heritage. This book documents the emergence of local heritage places, practices, and debates countering the globalized versions embraced by the heritage professions offering a critical paradigm for post-destruction planning and practice that incorporates alternative models of heritage. Heritage projects in the Arabian Peninsula are developing rapidly. Museums and heritage sites are symbols of shifting national identities, and a way of placing the Arabian Peninsula states on the international map. Global, i.e. Western, heritage standards and practices have been utilised for the rapid injection of heritage expertise in museum development and site management and for international recognition. The use of Western heritage models in the Arabian Peninsula inspires two key areas for research which this book examines: the obscuring of indigenous concepts and practices of heritage and expressions of cultural identity; and the tensions between local/community concepts of heritage and identity and the new national identities being constructed through museums and heritage sites at a state level.

The Heritage State: Religion and Preservation in Contemporary Qatar

The Heritage State examines the emergence and growth of a tradition of heritage and its preservation in the Arabian Peninsula following decades of the region's marginalization in global heritage debates, largely due to a Eurocentric worldview that prioritizes secular over religious ideas of heritage value and its circulation. Through an exploration of the rise of a powerful advocate for global and local heritage at the turn of the century in the State of Qatar, this book describes the possibilities for thinking about and acting on a heritage that expertly negotiates secular and religious contexts and purposes. Trinidad Rico invites a postcolonial examination of heritage traditions in the Middle East beyond the lens of iconoclasm and terrorism to shed light on and celebrate the ingenuity and hybridity involved in growing a culture of heritage. She describes how representation of agency and decision-making in the Middle East and Arabian Peninsula are still dominated by the theme of conflict and terrorism and, further, how cultural heritage debates are deeply implicated in this misrepresentation.It is critical to the future of cultural studies to demonstrate empirically, through historical records and contemporary practices, the extent to which these regions have been represented unfairly and excluded from developing more sophisticated identities and authorities in the emergence of global heritage. The Heritage State puts Qatar at the center of such a conversation, suggesting that Qatar is not a place where things happen but a place that makes things happen in the cultural sphere.
