The Cambridge Companion to the Nazi-Soviet War (Cambridge Companions to History)

by David Stahel

The Nazi-Soviet War was the largest and most brutal theatre of the Second World War, fought between two of the most ruthless states ever to exist. Bringing together twenty-four of the most accomplished authors in both German and Soviet history, this Cambridge Companion provides the most authoritative, and yet highly accessible, guide to the conflict. Each chapter examines a key aspect of the war from war planning, the opposing forces and the campaigns to criminality and occupation, alliances, the home fronts and postwar legacies and myth-making. The authors demonstrate that the Nazi-Soviet war was both a conventional clash of arms in which millions of soldiers fought in titanic battles, but also a non-conventional war in which soldiers and security forces murdered countless non-combatants. It was a war of resources, industry, mobilisation, administration, and popular support, with implications that still drive European security debates today.

Global Perspectives on the Definition, Assessment, and Reduction of Bias and Unfairness in Employment Testing (Educational and Psychological Testing in a Global Context)

by Dennis Doverspike Winfred Arthur Jr. Benjamin D. Schulte

The use of tests and assessments in employment-related decision making has the potential to benefit organizations and individuals. However, their use is frequently criticized because of their adverse potential for bias and unfairness. Although issues pertaining to employment testing, bias, and unfairness are extensively researched and written about, previous work has predominately focused on perspectives from the United States. Therefore, the goal of this handbook is to provide a global examination of ideas and issues pertaining to bias and unfairness in employment testing. Specifically, this text details perspectives from twenty-three countries spanning six regions of the globe, on the definition, assessment, and reduction of bias and unfairness in employment testing. In doing so, this work fills a critical gap in the knowledge and information available to employment testing scholars and practitioners who conduct research and practice in an increasingly globalized world.

Shapes in Revolution: The Political Morphology of Cuban Life

by Martin Holbraad

Revolutions are cosmogonic. More than any other modern political form, their deliberate goal is to precipitate change as a total, all-embracing project: not just a radically new political order but one that reaches deep into the fabric of social relationships, seeking to transform people at their very core, recasting the horizons that give their lives shape and meaning. Combining ethnographic and historiographic research, Shapes in Revolution tells the story of this radical process of life-formation, with all of its rugged contradictions and ambiguities, as it has unfolded in Cuba. As well as a novel anthropological perspective on revolutions, the upshot is a fresh approach to the study of political forms and their power to format people and their relationships into particular shapes. Articulating politics through the shapes it gives to people and their lives, the work proposes relational morphology as a new departure for political anthropology.

Hunger Redraws the Map: Food, State, and Society in the Era of the First World War (Studies in the Social and Cultural History of Modern Warfare)

by Claire Morelon Mary Elisabeth Cox

The First World War resulted in major economic and agricultural strains to neutral and belligerent countries alike, including shifts in trading patterns, blockades, and extensive physical destruction on a unique scale. The resulting hunger crises transformed relationships between the state, citizens, and civil society and had a profound and lasting impact on the twentieth century. As civilians across Europe and the Middle East struggled to survive, new emphasis was placed on the state's responsibility to provide food for its citizens, leading to emerging concerns about 'nutritional sovereignty', the viability of new states, and a huge expansion of international humanitarianism. This innovative history utilises both contemporary and modern maps to analyse food shortages and responses to them across Europe and the Ottoman Empire from 1914 to 1923. Through a comparative approach, the authors demonstrate the consequences of civilian hunger in its military, international, political, social, economic, and cultural dimensions.

Kant and Environmental Philosophy: The Climate Crisis and the Imperative of Sustainability

by Zachary Vereb

Kant and Environmental Philosophy starts with problems of the Anthropocene and looks to Immanuel Kant for answers. It offers a close reading of Kant's texts, arguing that the views we find in his ethical, political, and aesthetic theory are helpful for making sense of ecological challenges like climate change. The book clarifies our duties regarding climate extinction, geoengineering, consumerism, and future generations. It provides insights and solutions for obstacles to sustainability, including corruption and the possibility of civil collapse. In environmental philosophy, historical commentators mine familiar philosophers for insights to these problems, but Kant is often seen as an anthropocentric and dualistic individualist in a world dominated by consequentialist thinking, and accordingly he is overlooked as relevant for environmental philosophy. This book challenges that conclusion, and its comprehensive examination of Kant's texts provides lessons for environmental philosophy and climate ethics at a time when a fresh perspective is desperately needed.

Climate Change Science: An Essential Reader

by Richard C. Somerville

Written by an established climate change scientist, this book introduces readers to cutting-edge climate change science. Unlike many books on the topic that devote themselves to recent events, this volume provides a historical context and describes early research results as well as key modern scientific findings. It explains how the climate change issue has developed over many decades, how the science has progressed, how diplomacy has (so far) proven unable to find a means of limiting global emissions of heat-trapping substances, and how the forecast for future climate change has become more worrisome. A scientific or mathematical background is not necessary to read this book, which includes no equations, jargon, complex charts or graphs, or quantitative science at all. Anyone who can read a newspaper will understand this book. It is ideal for introductory courses on climate change, especially for non-science major students.

Labor Unions and Democratic Unrest in North Africa: Protest and Resistance in Tunisia and Morocco (The Global Middle East)

by Ashley Anderson

The political upheavals witnessed in North Africa during the 2011 Arab uprisings brought renewed attention to the region. This book focuses on the inconspicuous yet critical role of labor unions in shaping protest success (and failure) during this period. Drawing on a comparison between Tunisia and Morocco, Ashley Anderson connects the divergent protest strategies of each country to the varying levels of institutional incorporation and organizational cohesion developed by labor unions under authoritarian rule. Using material drawn from English, Arabic, and French news sources, archives and extensive interviews, Anderson demonstrates how Tunisia's exclusionary corporatist system enabled the Tunisian General Labour Union (UGTT) to emerge as a powerful political actor, while Moroccan unions struggled to extract minimal concessions from the incumbent regime. By highlighting the interplay between authoritarian institutions, labor activism, and political reforms, this book sheds light on the challenges that labor organizations face in transforming their countries' political and economic future.

MATLAB Essentials: Symbolic and Numeric Problem-Solving in Engineering

by Lester W. Schmerr, Jr.

This book introduces MATLAB as a direct problem-solving tool, where the many built-in functions and commands of MATLAB can be used to perform even complex tasks. In this mode MATLAB acts as a very advanced scientific calculator. The primary purpose of this book is to teach the reader how to use the functions and commands of this calculator and, when necessary, how to save the problem-solving steps so that the solution obtained can be re-used or re-evaluated under different conditions. The book also introduces symbolic calculations extensively in addition to the traditional numerical methods found in other texts. MATLAB was initially introduced as a numerical tool for linear algebra problems and over the years has extended those numerical capabilities significantly to many areas of science and engineering. Consequently, it is not surprising that most books retain a strong emphasis on numerical solutions and treat symbolic calculations only briefly, if at all. A key point is that while symbolic algebra can be used to solve problems symbolically, it can also be used to make the formulation of problems much simpler, even if the ultimate solution is found numerically. Recognizing and demonstrating this important property of symbolic calculations is unique to this book. Examines symbolic and numeric MATLAB tools with engineering examples of linear and nonlinear equations, eigenvalue problems, and differential equations

The Palgrave Handbook of Music and Sound in Peak TV

by Janet K. Halfyard Nicholas Reyland

The Palgrave Handbook to Music and Sound in Peak TV charts the transformation of television’s sonic storytelling during the new “golden age” of televisual narrative from the late 1990s to the early 2020s. Grounded in close analytical, critical, and theoretical work identifying the key traits of music and sound in this “peak TV” period, the book casts its critical net wider to develop interpretations of significance not just for screen music studies and musicology, but for screen and media studies too. By theorizing “peakness” with respect to sound and music, and by drawing together contributions from a diverse collection of prominent musicologists, media scholars, and practitioners, this handbook provides the authoritative guide to the role music has played in creating the success of some of the most culturally and commercially significant popular art of the early twenty-first century. The volume contains 25 essays in three main sections—Concepts and Aesthetics, Practices and Production, and Audiences and Interpretations. Topics discussed include peakness, complexity, ostentatious scoring, antiheroes, memory, franchises, worldbuilding, nostalgia, maternity, trauma, actor’s voices, title sequences, library music, branding, queer/camp scoring, kids TV, captioning, industry practices, HBO, and sound design. Shows examined include The Sopranos, The Wire, Game of Thrones, Battlestar Galactica, Westworld, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Stranger Things, The Bridge, Dexter, Killing Eve, Mad Men, American Horror Story, Rings of Power, Fargo, Peaky Blinders, Call the Midwife, Twin Peaks, and Twin Peaks: The Return.

Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis (Respiratory Disease Series: Diagnostic Tools and Disease Managements)

by Yasunari Miyazaki

This book serves as an introduction and a practical guide to Extrinsic Allergic Alveolitis, presenting the definition, epidemiology, pathophysiology, methods for diagnosing the condition, treatment options, and prognosis. A variety of disease-related substances are discussed along with the clinical subtypes that distinguish between acute and chronic, fibrotic and nonfibbrotic kinds are brought to light in the first part. The parts that follow discuss several test options and assessments for managing hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP). A kind of interstitial lung disease (ILD) known as HP is brought on by repeated exposure to a causative antigen. Antigen identification is crucial in the diagnosis of HP because many of its clinical characteristics overlap with those of other types of ILD. Additionally, because the frequency of HP varies around the globe due to climatic and geographic variations, as well as regional customs and occupational activities, specialized chapters including summer-type HP, bird-related HP, and humidifier's lung are also covered. Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis, a new volume in the book series Respiratory Disease Series: Diagnostic Tools and Disease Management, provides a useful reference manual for both beginner and experienced medical professionals, pulmonologists, radiologists, basic researchers, and pathologists assessing patients with interstitial lung disease. The most recent information on HP is provided, and readers will learn in-depth evidence, insights and problems currently being faced, which will set a foundation to future progress of clinical research on this disease as well as its diagnosis and treatment.

Gynäkopsychologie in der psychotherapeutischen Praxis: Häufige Beschwerdebilder erkennen, verstehen & behandeln (Psychotherapie: Therapiegestaltung & Praxismanagement)

by Misa Yamanaka Lorena Eisenegger

Netflix's Ripley: Television Antiheroes, Difficult Empathy, and the Aesthetics of Forgery (Palgrave Studies in Adaptation and Visual Culture)

by Joy McEntee

This book traces the intertextual genealogy behind Netflix&’s new series Ripley, directed by Steve Zaillian, and offers a critical examination of Tom Ripley&’s enduring appeal across different media. As the series quickly climbs Netflix&’s international charts, this volume provides a timely and insightful contribution to the Ripleyverse, exploring the character&’s complex moral and sexual dimensions in today&’s cultural context. McEntee investigates Ripley&’s role within the televisual antihero genre, engaging with theories from Jason Mittell&’s Complex TV and Margrethe Bruun Vaage&’s The Antihero in American Television. While Andrew Scott&’s portrayal of Ripley aims to generate empathy, this book contends that traditional frameworks for understanding antiheroes are insufficient. Instead, it introduces Eric Leake&’s notion of &“difficult empathy&” as a more appropriate model for analyzing Scott&’s Ripley, offering a fresh perspective on the character&’s moral ambiguity. This contrasts sharply with Anthony Minghella&’s 1999 adaptation, where Matt Damon&’s Ripley elicited a more straightforward emotional response. Readers will discover a nuanced discussion of how Ripley both adheres to and subverts the conventions of the antihero genre and comments self-reflexively on the process of adaptation. The book invites scholars and students of television studies, film, and literature to engage with these themes, providing a rich resource for understanding the evolving landscape of media narratives. Whether you are a scholar of media studies or a curious reader intrigued by the complexities of modern narratives, this book promises to deepen your understanding of the cultural significance of Tom Ripley&’s latest iteration.
