Line Defects in Conformal Field Theory: From Weak to Strong Coupling (Springer Theses)
by Julien BarratThis book investigates conformal line defects in both the weak- and strong-coupling regimes. Conformal field theory finds applications across diverse fields, from statistical systems at criticality to quantum gravity through the AdS/CFT correspondence. These theories are subject to strong constraints, enabling a systematic non-perturbative analysis. Conformal defects provide a controlled means of breaking the symmetry, introducing new physical phenomena while preserving crucial benefits of the underlying conformal symmetry. Two distinct classes of models are studied. First, we focus on the supersymmetric Wilson line in N = 4 Super Yang–Mills, which serves as an ideal testing ground for the development of innovative techniques such as the analytic conformal bootstrap. The second class consists of magnetic lines in Yukawa models, which have fascinating applications in 3d condensed-matter systems. These systems have the potential to emulate phenomena observed in the Standard Model in a low-energy setting.

Digital Geographies—Theory, Space, and Communities: A Machine-Generated Literature Review
by Abdul ShabanThis machine-generated volume, with chapter introductions by the human expert, showcases how digital technologies are having deep transformative impacts on geographies and temporalities of social, political, economic, and personal lives. They are altering perceptions and physicality of space and time. They are giving birth to digital communities and societies where distance remains of little significance. Virtual spaces and ICT have disrupted state sovereignties, often liquidating their physical national boundaries. The rise of the digital economy shows that new important raw materials for the future are information rather than coal, oil, and minerals. Digitalisation is also leading to several contradictory processes of democratisation, rising welfare of the citizens, as well as surveillance, peripheralisation and exclusion. States are taking pride in digitalising their services to the citizens, with massive consequences on the welfare of those facing digital divides. As a departure to, and in addition to, the usual understanding of digitalisation, society, and space, the present volume engages with some of the critical questions while reviewing existing literature: What are the space relations of digital technologies? What are the forms and consequences of changing physical space–human relations to digital-space-human relations? How is the sense of time and space changing with pervasive performatives of ‘in real-time’ and ‘virtual realities’ or with perceptible or portable spaces? In what ways does digitalisation relate to knowledge and power? Why and how must we theorise the digitalisation-led transformative processes of sociality, materiality and their spatialities? The book will be useful for teachers, researchers, and students engaged in this new area of digital geography, especially in social science and its subfields of sociology, economics, political sciences, anthropology, psychology, development studies, policy studies, social work, urban studies, and planning. For the full picture, the volume can be read in combination with its companion volume on ‘Digital Geographies – Urbanisation, Economy and Modelling’.

But all of that covers up the real love story of this war, the passionate tryst between the conflict' s two biggest heroes: the Trojan prince Hector and the Greek warrior Achilles. In this modern re-telling of the events of the Trojan war, we see Zeus give up on the mortals out of boredom and disinterest, while his godly offspring throw 21st century slurs (and menstrual blood) at each other, as they meddle in mortal affairs. Meanwhile, the mortals discuss their affairs over breakfast at the local Waffle House or pull tabs at the corner bar. And of course, a love affair gone wrong is the driving force behind it all, as told in true Greek style by the universal voice of the Lyceum Janitor.
Stepping Out of Otherness: Women of Colour Finding Their Inner Goddess
by Rita SymonsWhat might the impact be on a grown woman of having a nursery school teacher change and anglicise her name at the age of three? That three-year-old was me. In our world, we face more and more polarisation and so it feels imperative that we understand the concept and lived experience of “Othering”. Othering takes away individuality and reduces whole groups to “they”.This book explores the theory, examining why Othering is so much part of human biology and conditioning. Through a narrative approach, the experiences of women of colour growing up in 1970s and 1980s Britain are explored, sharing individual stories and common themes. Ultimately this book is a celebration of their deep commitment to self-work and development and their success in navigating the additional burden of being different. We hear from other thinkers and activists, and offer active hope and potential ways forward in how we might create more inclusive, sustainable societies. This is a monumental task but arguably we have no choice, and so the work of changing how we choose to live feels like the most important work we can do together.

Accounting for Sustainable Business: Integrating CSR and ESG Principles (Routledge-Giappichelli Studies in Business and Management)
by Alessandro MigliavaccaThe role of firms, corporations, and businesses in shaping social outcomes has long been a key area of focus for economics and business scholars. With growing attention on addressing climate change, reducing social inequalities, and upholding human rights, there is an increasing interest in how corporate activities impact society. This book examines these pressing issues through the lens of fundamental theories of the firm, particularly drawing on the Italian tradition of Economia Aziendale, which views the firm as a vehicle for meeting human needs and generating social value. The book begins by introducing the anthropocentric theory of the firm and explores the connection between accounting practices and sustainable management. It offers a thorough review of the literature on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) practices, highlighting key aspects of the extensive body of work in this field. The analysis is grounded in the context of evolving regulations, especially within the EU, that underscore the importance of considering both financial and sustainability factors. Rational management theory is expanded to include sustainability accounting, showcasing its pivotal role in corporate decision-making. The book provides detailed guidance on the integrated knowledge acquisition process, showing how companies can systematically identify and assess their social and environmental impacts. This process is further illustrated through a hypothetical reality-based case study, demonstrating its application in a practical context. The book concludes with an exploration of current trends and future directions in sustainability accounting. It serves as a valuable resource for academics, practitioners, and anyone interested in the intersection of corporate governance, accounting, and sustainability.
Nation Branding in Non-Western Societies: Projecting India as a ‘Civilisation State’
by Shantanu ChakrabartiA country’s stature in global politics is often determined by its popular image and public perceptions, as reflected in global media. While ‘nation branding’ as a term and a tool of analysis in Social Sciences has emerged prominently since the 1990s, the practice of ‘positive’ projection of states, regions and locality along with non-state institutions has deeper historical roots. Apart from nation branding, the cultural turn in ‘International Relations’ has led to popularisation of analytical concepts like ‘soft power’ and ‘civilisation’ or ‘civilisational states.’The present work focuses on two of these concepts: ‘nation branding’ and ‘civilisation state’ and traces the historical process of evolution in Indian nation building project. It analyses the evolving concept of ‘civilisation state’ and its association with the strong urge for autonomy along with the self-perception of national and cultural greatness shared by the Indian elite leading to a search for identity and recognition of the intra-regional and extra-regional linkages in terms of shared cultural and historical identity. It also looks into the process of continuity from independence to present times and to what extent this has influenced Indian elite thinking and conceptualisation of India’s status in global affairs.Print edition not for sale in South Asia (India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Bhutan)
