The Palgrave Handbook of Global Mormonism
by R. Gordon Shepherd A. Gary Shepherd Ryan T. CragunThis handbook explores contemporary Mormonism within a global context. The authors provide a nuanced picture of a historically American religion in the throes of the same kinds of global change that virtually every conservative faith tradition faces today. They explain where and how the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has penetrated national and cultural boundaries in Latin America, Oceania, Europe, Asia, and Africa, as well as in North America beyond the borders of Mormon Utah. They also address numerous concerns within a multinational, multicultural church: What does it mean to be a Latter-day Saint in different world regions? What is the faith’s appeal to converts in these places? What are the peculiar problems for members who must manage Mormon identities in conjunction with their different national, cultural, and ethnic identities? How are leaders dealing with such issues as the status of women in a patriarchal church, the treatment of LGBTQ members, increasing disaffiliation of young people, and decreasing growth rates in North and Latin America while sustaining increasing growth in parts of Asia and Africa?
The Age of Deleveraging
by A. Gary ShillingTop economist Gary Shilling shows you how to prosper in the slow-growing and deflationary times that lie aheadWhile many investors fear a rapid rise in inflation, author Gary Shilling, an award-winning economic forecaster, argues that the global economy is going through a long period of de-leveraging and weak growth, which makes deflation far more likely and a far greater threat to investors than inflation. Shilling explains in clear language and compelling logic why the world economy will struggle for several more years and what investors can do to protect and grow their wealth in the difficult times ahead. The investment strategies that worked for last 25 years will not work in the next 10 years. Shilling advises readers to avoid broad exposure to stocks, real estate, and commodities and to focus on high-quality bonds, high-dividend stocks, and consumer staple and food stocks.Written by one of today's best forecasters of economic trends-twice voted by Institutional Investor as Wall Street's top economistClearly explains what to invest in, what to avoid, and how to cope with a deflationary, slow-growth economyDemonstrates how Shilling has been consistently right about major economic trends since he began forecasting in the early 1980sFilled with in-depth insights and practical advice, this timely guide lays out a convincing case for why investors need to be prepared for a long period of weak growth and deflation-not inflation-and what you can do to prosper in the difficult times ahead.

Beyond Assessment of Quality of Life in Schizophrenia
by A. George Awad Lakshmi N.P. VorugantiThis book fills a significant research gap in how to integrate quality of life data into relevant clinical care plans, and to broaden its applicability to pharmacoeconomic studies of antipsychotic medications and health policy decision-making. It also presents an argument for reformulating the concept of health-related quality of life in schizophrenia as a bio-psycho-social construct, which provides an opportunity to better explore the many factors underpinning the concept itself. Internationally renowned experts from different scientific backgrounds and scopes of expertise each make arguments for the need to invigorate quality of life as a concept in schizophrenia, by broadening its usefulness for clinical and research efforts. The book represents an important addition to the extensive contributions of its editors, Dr. A. George Awad and Dr. Lakshmi N. P. Voruganti, to the field of quality of life.

by Janneke Plantenga A. Geske DijkstraGender and Economics: A European Perspective provides an introduction to gender studies in economics. This is a rapidly expanding field in which textbooks are urgently necessary. The contributors give comprehensive coverage of the economic situation of women throughout Europe. The authors approach the subject at three different levels. * The economic theory of gender and economics * The different positions of men and women in the economy, their earning power and the division of labour within the family * European policy and law, and how this is evolving. Giving a unique balance of theoretical and empirical data this book will be of great use to students of Labour Economics. It will also provide a wider view for all students of micro and macro economics.
The Impact of International Debt Relief (Routledge Studies in Development Economics)
by A. Geske DijkstraInternational debt relief continues to be a highly controversial subject. Although many heavily indebted poor countries have received large amounts of debt relief over the past quarter of a century, it doesn’t appear to be enough. This book examines the impact of international debt relief efforts since 1990. It assesses whether the various debt relief modalities have enhanced economic growth in eight highly indebted countries in Latin America and Africa. Dijkstra argues that fundamental changes of the international aid and debt architecture are necessary to stop the flow of new multilateral loans and the possible perverse effects of conditionality.
Concrete Structures: Stresses and Deformations: Analysis and Design for Sustainability, Fourth Edition
by A. Ghali R. Favre M. ElbadryThis text presents the most effective analysis for predicting the true stresses and deflections of concrete structures, accounting for creep and shrinkage of concrete and relaxation of prestressed reinforcement. Sustainability has become a major requirement in modern structures, which need to sustain satisfactory service over a longer life. It is not rare to specify a life span of 100 years for infrastructure such as bridges. This complete and wide-ranging study of stresses and deformations of reinforced and prestressed concrete structures focuses on design methods for avoiding the deflections and cracking that diminish serviceability. This fourth edition has a new emphasis on designing for serviceability. It has been comprehensively updated. It now includes 65 solved examples and more than 45 instructive problems with answers given at the end of the book. An accompanying website contains design calculation programs, which allow interactive data input. Independent of codes of practice, the book is universally applicable, and is especially suitable for practising engineers and graduate students.

Land-use and Prehistory in South-East Spain (Routledge Library Editions: Archaeology)
by A. Gilman J. B. ThornesBased on a major research programme, and originally published in 1985, this book looked to provide an economic foundation for reinterpreting the Neolithic-Bronze Age sequence of South-east Spain in terms of emergent social complexity. The cultural evolution of the area had already been considered in terms of influence from the eastern Mediterranean but this book uses site catchment analysis to give an economic baseline for all thirty-five of the better-known prehistoric settlements of the region. Site catchment analysis assumes that people minimised transport costs in production and that ancient and modern resource spaces correspond systematically. This research therefore studied modern land use and combined it with evidence from historical, archaeological and geomorphological investigation. The book shows the increasing social complexity evident in the archaeological record emerging as a result of progressive intensification of agricultural technique. Offering a complete coherent evolutionary model for the archaeological sequence of the region’s prehistory, this book is a worthy in-depth study for prehistorians, geographers and anyone interested in the history of the western Mediterranean.

War, Power and the Economy: Mercantilism and state formation in 18th-century Europe (Routledge Explorations in Economic History)
by A. González EncisoWar, Power and the Economy contains a comparative history of Great Britain, France and Spain, the three rival empires of the 1700s. It explores how the states prepared for war, what kind of economic means they had, what institutional changes they implemented, and how efficient this was. As such, the book presents the first comparative synthesis aiming to understand the outcome of the global confrontation in the eighteenth century. Faced with the challenge of paying for new and more costly wars, some countries found flexible ways to get more money and better supplies, whereas others did not. The development of freer colonial markets, the increase of consumption and its taxation, the problems of venal administration or the different systems of patronage with contractors, are some of the factors explaining the divergences that were made clear by 1815. This book explores political and economic dimensions of the eighteenth-century European state in order to explain why and how changes in power as an outcome of war depended upon the available means and the way they were obtained and used. The book takes the idea that making war or preparing for it obliged governments to make important changes in their institutions, so that during the eighteenth century the state in many ways formed itself through war efforts. Ultimately, this study aims to show how closely political and military success was entwined with economic interests. This volume is of great interest to those who study economic history, political economy and European history.

Hard X-Ray Imaging of Solar Flares
by Michele Piana A. Gordon Emslie Anna Maria Massone Brian R. DennisThe idea for this text emerged over several years as the authors participated in research projects related to analysis of data from NASA's RHESSI Small Explorer mission. The data produced over the operational lifetime of this mission inspired many investigations related to a specific science question: the when, where, and how of electron acceleration during solar flares in the stressed magnetic environment of the active Sun.A vital key to unlocking this science problem is the ability to produce high-quality images of hard X-rays produced by bremsstrahlung radiation from electrons accelerated during a solar flare. The only practical way to do this within the technological and budgetary limitations of the RHESSI era was to opt for indirect modalities in which imaging information is encoded as a set of two-dimensional spatial Fourier components. Radio astronomers had employed Fourier imaging for many years. However, differently than for radio astronomy, X-ray images produced by RHESSI had to be constructed from a very limited number of sparsely distributed and very noisy Fourier components. Further, Fourier imaging is hardly intuitive, and extensive validation of the methods was necessary to ensure that they produced images with sufficient accuracy and fidelity for scientific applications. This book summarizes the results of this development of imaging techniques specifically designed for this form of data. It covers a set of published works that span over two decades, during which various imaging methods were introduced, validated, and applied to observations. Also considering that a new Fourier-based telescope, STIX, is now entering its nominal phase on-board the ESA Solar Orbiter, it became more and more apparent to the authors that it would be a good idea to put together a compendium of these imaging methods and their applications. Hence the book you are now reading.
