Public Debt in Kenya: An Economic History (Routledge Studies in Development Economics)

by Aaron Thegeya

Public debt in developing economies has increased dramatically over the last 20 years, with debt repayment obligations putting the livelihoods of millions of individuals at risk and threatening to stall progress toward lowering poverty rates and achieving long- term development objectives across many countries, especially in sub-Saharan Africa. Debt fragility is a systemic issue that affects many countries spanning different continents, regardless of the idiosyncratic nature of each country’s system of government and drivers of growth. Kenya is one of these fragile economies, currently classified as an economy at high risk of default. This book gives a historical economic account of public debt in Kenya, dating back to the late 1800s. It describes the key episodes and events that resulted in the accumulation of debt and gives an intuitive understanding of the economic dynamics of debt during the precolonial, colonial, and postcolonial periods in Kenya’s history. Existing studies on Kenya’s public debt are either not comprehensive, choosing to focus on a narrow period, or are technical empirical analyses, rendering them inaccessible to a large audience. By describing the dynamics of public debt in Kenya, the book increases familiarity with a topic that has important implications for Kenya, and which has occupied a central stage in Kenya’s policy debates in the recent past.History shows that contagion from economic crises is not unique and isolated to individual nations, thus the book is relevant not only for policy debates in Kenya, but also for other low- income and emerging economies within sub- Saharan Africa.

Clinical Fictions: Psychoanalytic Novelists and Short Story Writers

by Jeffrey Berman

Clinical Fictions: Psychoanalytic Novelists and Short Story Writers is the first book to explore works of fiction written by prominent psychoanalysts.Broken down into thematic sections, the book traces the literary output of pioneering psychoanalysts such as Julia Kristeva, Bruce Fink, Thomas Odgen, and Gregorio Kohon, among others. Berman looks at works of historical fiction, detective fiction, and the short story, and shows how recurring themes typical of these genres can be understood both psychoanalytically and through a literary lens. The works included investigate experiences of childhood adversity, life in dystopian societies, experiences of psychosis, bodily autonomy, personal loss and, above all, trauma. Unpacking these themes, and their depiction through fiction, Berman gives the reader the tools to apply psychoanalytic literary theory to further works. Interweaving his personal correspondence with authors, including a heartwarming exchange with Cliff Wilkerson, Berman offers unparalleled access to the inner workings of the writers’ minds. This book will be of interest to students and researchers using psychoanalytic literary theory, as well as mental health practitioners who are interested in the intersections between literature and psychoanalysis and discovering new ways of probing the unspoken and unconscious.

The AI-Centered Enterprise: Reshaping Organizations with Context Aware AI

Anti-Racism, Multiculturalism and Human Rights: Reconceiving the Politics of Diversity in Employment and Education (Palgrave Politics of Identity and Citizenship Series)

by Pier-Luc Dupont

The continuing prevalence of racial inequality and discrimination is well documented in Britain. While there are multiple accounts of how state institutions are shaped by and reproduce racism, much less has been said about their current and potential contribution to anti-racism. This book elucidates the long-term impact on racism of positive action in employment and multicultural school curricula. It also explores whether international human rights law creates a duty for states to adopt these policies. Positive action and multicultural curricula are not new and have long been advocated by multiculturalists, but this book systematically unpacks how they can counter four structural drivers of racism: racialised national identities, racialised power inequalities, racial fearmongering, and racial segregation. The book goes on to examine the extent to which they have been implemented in Britain, as well as the legal and political opportunities for future development.

Presentist Social Functionalism: Bringing Contemporary Evolutionary Biology to the Social Sciences (Foundations for Interdisciplinarity in the Life Sciences: Concise Monographs)

by Armin W. Schulz

This open access book presents and defends a new approach towards social functionalism: Presentist Social Functionalism. This approach draws on recent developments in evolutionary biology and philosophy of biology to provide a more compelling theoretical foundation for functionalist social analysis. Functionalist approaches to the social sciences—which aim at using facts about what social institutions are for to provide a fulcrum with which to understand, evaluate, and respond to social reality—are about as old as the subject itself, but have also been the subject of much criticism. In particular, a widespread concern for the functionalist tradition in the social sciences is that functional ascriptions often lack a plausible theoretical grounding, and that where such a theoretical grounding can be provided, the empirical presuppositions of this grounding often fail to be met. However, recent developments in evolutionary biology and the philosophy of biology promise to change this situation: they show that functional ascription can be compellingly made in an ahistorical, non-reproduction-based, and non-normative manner, which makes it possible to develop a new account of social functionalism that can fulfil the latter&’s theoretical and empirical desiderata. To show this, the book begins by laying out the major existing accounts of social functionalism and detailing their challenges. It then develops the new, alternative account of Presentist Social Functionalism. Given its interdisciplinary nature and application-focused approach, the book is of interest to researchers in a variety of fields, from evolutionary biology to the social sciences and philosophy.

History of Rabies in the Americas, Volume III: Reflections, Reports, Retrospectives, and Revelations (Fascinating Life Sciences)

by Charles E. Rupprecht

History of Rabies in the Americas, Volume III: Reflections, Reports, Retrospectives, and Revelations is a natural outgrowth of the prior two volumes, which presented topical and spatio-temporal insights on this theme. Volume III offers contributions from those with first-hand experiences with this disease, from groundbreaking discoveries in control and prevention, to the first person to survive rabies without prior vaccination. This volume goes beyond the objectivity of science writing to offer personal narratives detailing individual impacts, the local and global contributions authors have made to detection, prevention, and control, and the long-reaching effects of colonization and disease translocation into this region. The introduction of rabies to the Americas occurred much later than the rest of the world, and the region has played a uniquely pivotal role in global understanding of this disease. Rather than rehashing the topics presented in the first two volumes, Volume III focuses on the leadership role the Americas has played, in the words of those who experienced it first-hand.
