Teaching Fear: How We Learn to Fear Crime and Why It Matters

by Nicole E. Rader

Where do lessons of “stranger danger” and safety come from—and do they apply differently for women? A gender-fear paradox shows that although women are less likely to be victims of most crimes (sexual assault aside), their fear of crime is greater. Moreover, girls and women—especially White women—are taught to fear the wrong things and given impossible tools to prevent victimization. In Teaching Fear, Nicole Rader zooms in on the social learning process, tracing the ways that families, schools, and the media have become obsessed with crime myths, especially regarding girls and women. Based on in-depth research and family studies, Rader reveals the dubious and dangerous origins of many of the most prominent safety guidelines that teach young girls to be more afraid of crime. These guidelines carry over to adulthood, influencing women’s behaviors and the way they order their worlds, with dangerous consequences. As women teach their learned behavior and conditioned fear to others, gendered crime myths are recirculated from generation to generation, making them a staple in our society. Teaching Fear includes suggestions for taking precautionary measures and crime prevention strategies. Rader also provides guidance for instilling safety values and demonstrating how we can “teach fear better” to break this cycle and truly create greater security.

Sons of Chinatown: A Memoir Rooted in China and America

by William Gee Wong

William Gee Wong was born in Oakland, California’s Chinatown in 1941, the only son of his father, known as Pop. Pop was born in Guangdong Province, China and emigrated to Oakland as a teenager during the Chinese Exclusion era in 1912. He entered the U.S. legally as the “son of a native,” despite having partially false papers. Sons of Chinatown is Wong’s evocative dual memoir of his and his father’s parallel experiences in America. As Pop grappled with the systemic racism towards Asians during the exclusion era, Wong wistfully depicts Pop’s efforts to establish a family business and build a life for his family in segregated Oakland. As the exclusion law ended in 1943, young William was assimilating into American life and developing his path as a journalist. Writing for the Wall Street Journal, Oakland Tribune, and Asian American periodicals, Wong chronicled Asian American experiences while honoring Chinese American history and identity, but he too faced discrimination. Sons of Chinatown poignantly weaves these father and son stories together with admiration and righteous anger. Through the mirrored lens of his father, Wong reflects on the hardships Asian Americans endured—and continue to face—with American exceptionalism. Wong’s inspiring memoir provides a personal history that also raises the question of whether America welcomes or repels immigrants.

Building a Social Contract: Modern Workers' Houses in Early-Twentieth Century Detroit (Urban Life, Landscape and Policy)

by Michael McCulloch

The dream of the modern worker’s house emerged in early twentieth-century America as wage earners gained access to new, larger, and better-equipped dwellings. Building a Social Contract is a cogent history of the houses those workers dreamed of and labored for. Michael McCulloch chronicles the efforts of employers, government agencies, and the building industry who, along with workers themselves, produced an unprecedented boom in housing construction that peaked in the mid-1920s. Through oral histories, letters, photographs, and period fiction, McCulloch traces wage earners’ agency in negotiating a new implicit social contract, one that rewarded hard work with upward mobility in modern houses. This promise reflected workers’ increased bargaining power but, at the same time, left them increasingly vulnerable to layoffs. Building a Social Contract focuses on Detroit, the quintessential city of the era, where migrant workers came and were Americanized, and real estate agents and the speculative housebuilding industry thrived. The Motor City epitomized the struggle of Black workers in this period, who sought better lives through industrial labor but struggled to translate their wages into housing security amid racist segregation and violence. When Depression-era unemployment created an eviction crisis, the social contract unraveled, and workers rose up—at the polls and in the streets—to create a labor movement that reshaped American capitalism for decades. Today, the lessons McCulloch provides from early twentieth-century Detroit are a necessary reminder that wages are not enough, and only working-class political power can secure affordable housing.

Solidarity & Care: Domestic Worker Activism in New York City

by Alana Lee Glaser

The members of the Domestic Workers United (DWU) organization—immigrant women of color employed as nannies, caregivers, and housekeepers in New York City—formed to fight for dignity and respect and to “bring meaningful change” to their work. Alana Lee Glaser examines the process of how these domestic workers organized against precarity, isolation, and exploitation to help pass the 2010 New York State Domestic Worker Bill of Rights, the first labor law in the United States protecting in-home workers. Solidarity & Care examines the political mobilization of diverse care workers who joined together and supported one another through education, protests, lobbying, and storytelling. Domestic work activists used narrative and emotional appeals to build a coalition of religious communities, employers of domestic workers, labor union members, and politicians to first pass and then to enforce the new law. Through oral history interviews, as well as ethnographic observation during DWU meetings and protest actions, Glaser chronicles how these women fought (and continue to fight) to improve working conditions. She also illustrates how they endure racism, punitive immigration laws, on-the-job indignities, and unemployment that can result in eviction and food insecurity. The lessons from Solidarity & Care along with the DWU’s precedent-setting legislative success have applications to workers across industries. All royalties will go directly to the Domestic Workers United

Beyond Left, Right, and Center: The Politics of Gender and Ethnicity in Contemporary Germany

by Christina Xydias

Women’s political representation is often expected to be better on “the left.” However, the reality is more complicated. Using Germany’s multi-party system as its central case study, Beyond Left, Right, and Center challenges this conventional wisdom on political ideology. Christina Xydias shows that some right-leaning parties advocate for women’s rights and interests, while left- and right-leaning parties can be equally indifferent to lack of representation for women from marginalized groups. These findings follow from analyses of election results, transcripts from debates and speeches, and personal interviews, as well as from a close reading of intertwined military and citizenship policies that illustrate how women’s and ethnic minority groups’ rights are constructed. Beyond Left, Right, and Center concludes with an analysis of women’s representation across OECD countries, showing that right-leaning parties are more likely to support women’s rights and interests in societies that are more egalitarian.

The Perverse Feminine: An Archetypal Reclamation of Forbidden Power

by Kalen Aradia

The Perverse Feminine resurrects a long-buried psychic figure: The Perverse Feminine Archetype. Grounded in Intuitive Inquiry, this work builds on Jungian theory, feminist psychology, and myth to illuminate the archetypal constructs of forbidden power, deviant desire, and inherited shame shaping the collective psyche of cisgender women.Across careers, relationships, and inner lives, women in this study enliven the perverse through acts of subversion, refusal, creative expression, and sexual exploration. Through their stories, a meditation on the unconscious unfolds, unveiling the archetypal dimension as a portal to healing and integration.Distilled from the data, a four-stage framework maps the psychological journeys of research participants across the evolving inner landscapes, where pain, power, and transformation intertwine. Through evocative narratives that generate tools for archetypal engagement, this study offers individuals, theorists, and clinicians a guide to identity, self-discovery, and psychic wholeness within a rapidly changing cultural landscape.

Transnational and Transatlantic Fascism, 1918–2018: The Far Right in East Central and Southeastern Europe (Routledge Studies in Fascism and the Far Right)

by Per Anders Rudling

This volume charts the history of transnational and transatlantic fascism in East Central and Southeastern Europe, a lesser-known phenomenon that occurred throughout the twentieth century into the present.Organizations and individuals in this part of the continent, under the influences of Fascist Italy and Nazi Germany, conceptualized their own forms of fascism in the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s. Due to the heterogenous nature of East Central Europe, fascism took various forms in the territories that prior to 1918 had belonged to the Habsburg, German, Russian, and Ottoman Empires. As a result, East Central Europe became a mosaic of fascist parties, organizations, and movements. During World War II, East Central and Southeastern European fascisms substantially contributed to collaboration with the Nazis and the genocide of the Jews. During the Cold War, East Central and Southeastern European fascists underwent multifaced aesthetic and ideological transformations in the Soviet Union and its satellites as well as in exile in the West. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the legacy of fascism re-emerged in the region, informing parts of the ideologies of various neo-fascist, radical nationalist, anti-Semitic, and national conservative parties and movements, as well as motivating communal politicians to erect monuments to fascists, war criminals, and anti-Semites.With comprehensive coverage through a range of essays, this book is a helpful resource to scholars in European history, political history, and the study of fascism.

The Impact of Microfinance: Poverty Reduction and Financial Inclusion in the Global South (Routledge Studies in Development Economics)

by Agnes Olatokunbo Martins

Historically, microfinance has emerged as a means to extend financial services to previously excluded populations, serving as a pathway to poverty reduction and aligning with Sustainable Development Goal 1: End poverty in all its forms everywhere. This book argues that microfinance plays a crucial role in achieving financial inclusion, significantly enhancing economic welfare, and reducing poverty in developing countries. It highlights the necessity to rigorously address issues such as mission drift, macroeconomic stability, governance, regulatory frameworks, and enforcement. It provides a contemporary and comprehensive overview of microfinance implementation in developing countries, enabling comparative analysis of regulatory and supervisory practices, and evaluates theoretical frameworks linking microfinance to economic growth and poverty reduction, utilising concepts of financial intermediation, resource allocation, and financial development. The book empirically tests the causal relationships between microfinance, economic growth, and poverty reduction using a balanced panel dataset of macroeconomic and microeconomic indicators and identifies and analyses the mechanisms through which microfinance impacts economic welfare and poverty reduction. As well as asking whether microfinance can alleviate multidimensional poverty in favourable macroeconomic, political, and business environments in developing countries, it also questions whether it enhances living standards, health, and education. It examines how economic shocks impact vulnerable populations and microfinance institutions and looks at the factors that contribute to the success of microfinance in countries where it is well-established. Further, it offers policy implications and recommendations to enhance the effectiveness of microfinance and address key challenges. This book targets a broad spectrum of readers involved in microfinance, financial inclusion, and development economics, including researchers, academics and students as well as policymakers and government officials.

The Management of Loss: Humanity’s Existential Crises

by Manfred F. Kets de Vries

Loss is experienced in many forms—from the death of a loved one, illness, and job loss, to the emotional turmoil surrounding retirement, divorce, separation, or even the quiet ache of boredom and loneliness. World-renowned leadership scholar, psychoanalyst, social psychologist, and executive coach Manfred Kets de Vries explores how we can navigate loss in both life and work.A pioneer in the field of clinical and psychodynamic-systemic executive coaching, Manfred examines a wide spectrum of losses—some obvious, others more subtle—shedding light on how we respond to them. Some people fight against loss, denying its reality at all costs. Others may become consumed by grief. For some, work becomes a coping mechanism, a way to manage the existential anxiety that stems from life’s impermanence. In such cases, "manic" work habits can become a distraction—an escape from confronting painful truths. Written in an accessible and conversational style—as if speaking with a group of friends—this book offers deeply human insights brought to life through personal anecdotes, case studies, and illustrative vignettes. Manfred encourages readers to face their inner struggles without falling back on primitive defense mechanisms like splitting, projection, or denial. He guides us in reflecting on the consequences of our choices—past and future—so we may recognize our limitations, embrace our potential, and find meaning amid loss.An essential read for anyone grappling with loss, this book is especially valuable for executives, executive coaches, consultants, self-help enthusiasts, and well-being practitioners.

Tongues of Fire: Black Preaching in the Face of Lynching

by Aaron M. Treadwell

Tongues of Fire is a collection of sermons and other writings by Black preachers that speak directly to lynching in the Jim Crow era. The collection, expertly edited and annotated by Aaron M. Treadwell, features more than forty pastors and fifty sermons. The sermons illuminate how Black churches, particularly the African Methodist Episcopal Church, stood at the forefront of antilynching efforts during the Nadir era as Black clergymen used their preaching to help protect their congregations from danger. Known as theological protectionism, this form of preaching sought to thwart or avert lynchings—and occasionally succeeded. Emphasizing radical, pious, or constitutional forms of theological protectionism, the sermons reveal yet another way that Black Americans fought back against the wave of extralegal executions that swept the nation in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The collection exposes an early development of African American resistance ideology—a concept that aligned with and perhaps ignited the long civil rights movement. Included are sermons that support the use of self-defense with firearms, the public shaming and condemnation of white churches, and reparation strategies that pinpoint lynching as a qualifier for federal aid. In their efforts to protect their congregations, preachers showed a willingness to utilize a theology that saw beyond the divinity of Christ to encompass his humanity as a fellow victim of lynching. Protection theology highlighted a symbiotic relationship in which serving a lynched deity could motivate Black people to, in the words of a Black hymnist, “make it over.”In his introduction to each sermon, Treadwell explains and contextualizes the acts of racial caste violence that inspired these Black preachers. Tongues of Fire is the only book-length compilation of these vastly important yet understudied sermons, which reveal how Black churches fought against the scourge of lynching.

Contemporary Psychoanalytic Practice

by Andre Green

Aiming to theoretically re-establish clinical practice, Green revisits the very foundations of the analytic method. He traces a new map of the psychoanalytic field, now redefined by the predominance of non-neurotic structures, and follows the Freudian technical model centered on the notion of transference, and the post-Freudian model emphasizing countertransference (or the "analyst's desire"). From this innovative perspective, Green distinguishes the myths from the realities of the analytic process, questions the extension of the concept of countertransference, reevaluates the technical articulations of interpretation and construction, and reformulates the relationships between repetition, memory, and elaboration. This volume closes with three essays on functioning at the limits of analyzability, including the remarkable theoretical-clinical study: "Sexuality in non-neurotic structures". The essays in this book were selected by Green in dialogue with Fernando Urribarri to make them accessible to a wider readership. They reflect the post-1974 elaborations and conclusions drawn from Green's extensive clinical experience treating and supervising analytic work. They are a testament to Green's determination to extend Freudian theory to adapt to contemporary clinical challenges, while consistently remaining within the Freudian paradigm. This is the perfect book to launch the pivotal French Psychoanalysis: Contemporary Voices, Classical Texts series. Filled with fresh ideas, it is essential reading for all psychoanalytic clinicians, academics, and trainees.
