Aporophobia and Punitive Power in Brazil: Guidelines for a Failed Critical-Criminological Concept (SpringerBriefs in Criminology)

It highlights how aporophobia fails to account for the central role of Brazil&’s history of slavery in shaping its abysmal penal selectivity, which disproportionately targets marginalized groups perceived as social pariahs. By obscuring these structural roots, this movement inadvertently legitimizes Brazil&’s unchecked punitive power, perpetuating the belief in criminal law as a solution to deeply embedded social issues—ultimately reinforcing what is identified as a criminology of blindness that ignores the roots of the abysmal selectivity of punitive power in Brazil. Rooted in critical criminology, the book highlights the limitations of aporophobia as a critical-criminological tool and proposes an alternative framework grounded in intersectionality and Southern epistemologies. These perspectives emphasize the importance of delegitimizing criminal law as a mechanism for addressing social inequalities while constructing a more realistic and emancipatory critique of punitive power. It also exposes the criminal policy of the &“other&”, a caste-based model that erodes the rule of law, even under the punitive new left. They sometimes become invasive pests, costing billions of dollars in damage to crops worldwide annually, and farmers try to control them with toxic pesticides, risking environmental damage. Fortunately, scale insects are highly susceptible to control by natural enemies so biological control is possible. They have unique genetic systems, unusual metamorphosis, a broad spectrum of essential symbionts, and some are sources of commercial products like red dyes, shellac and wax. There is, therefore, wide interest in these unusual, destructive, beneficial, and abundant insects. The Encyclopedia of Scale Insect Pests is the most comprehensive work on worldwide scale insect pests, providing detailed coverage of the most important species (230 species in 26 families, 36% of the scale insect pest species known). Advice is provided on collection, preservation, slide-mounting, vouchering, and labelling of specimens, fully illustrated with colour photographs, diagrams and drawings. Pest species are presented in two informal groups of families, the 'primitive' Archaeococcoids followed by the more 'advanced' Neococcoids, covered in phylogenetic order. Land, Life, and Emotional Landscapes at the Margins of Bangladesh (Transforming Asia)
by Éva Rozália HölzleDrawing on two years of ethnographic research in the north-eastern borderlands of Bangladesh, this book focuses on the everyday struggles of indigenous farmers threatened with losing their land due to such state programmes as the realignment of the national border, ecotourism, social forestry and the establishment of a military cantonment. In implementing these programmes, state actors challenge farmers’ right to land, instituting spaces of violence in which multiple forms of marginalisation overlap and are reinforced. Mapping how farmers react to these challenges emotionally and practically, the book argues that these land conflicts serve as a starting point for existentially charged disputes in which the survival efforts of farmers clash with the political imaginations and practices of the nation-state. The analysis shows that losing land represents more than being deprived of a material asset: it is nothing less than the extinction of ways of life.
