Kashmir Under the Sultans
by Mohibbul HasanKashmir Under Sultans introduces the reader to a subject that begins with the foundation of the Sultanate and ends with the conquest of Kashmir by Akbar. During the Sultanate period, Kashmir had achieved a high standard of culture, but with the disappearance of her independence, her culture gradually declined. Poets, painters, and scholars had to leave the Valley and seek their livelihood elsewhere owing to the absence of local patronage. They then entered the service of the Mughal emperors and were added to the court, thereby lessening the cultural impoverishment of Kashmir. The book encloses political, social, economic and cultural activities that had a lasting influence on the Kashmir Valley in that period. It is of considerable value to social historians as Professor Mohibbul Hasan offers insights into political and cultural currents and crosscurrents in Kashmir. This title is co-published with Aakar Books. Print editions not for sale in South Asia (India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Bhutan)

Key Contested Issues in Criminology and Criminal Justice: A Biopsychosocial Perspective (Crime Science Series)
by Anthony WalshKey Contested Issues in Criminology and Criminal Justice addresses the key issues within criminology and criminal justice that are strongly contested among scholars in the field.Covering 18 different themes, the book identifies the ways in which different issues are contested and demonstrates how biopsychosocial concepts and methods can inform most of them. It is divided into four broad sections. The first section examines philosophical issues such as the value of philosophy in criminology/criminal justice, the role of ideology in our disciplines, and the issues of human nature and free will versus determinism. The second section explains the biopsychosocial perspective that provides the framework used in exploring the various issues. It explores the possibility of integrating the natural sciences with criminology, behavioral and molecular genetics, evolutionary theory, and neuroscience. It also considers issues related to child maltreatment, brain development, and the role of rationality vis-à-vis emotion in decision-making. The third section examines crime causation and contains chapters on social learning versus control theories, radical/critical theories, the relationship between intelligence and criminal behavior, issues of socioeconomic status (SES), poverty, and crime, and whether religion is a barrier or bridge to antisocial behavior. The final section looks at four issues in criminal justice: the police abolition movement, the nature of punishment and its justifications by the criminal justice system, and issues in sentencing and the death penalty.Key Contested Issues in Criminology and Criminal Justice will be of value to students and scholars in criminology and criminal justice, as well as to criminal justice practitioners.
Key Studies in Psychology: A Guide to Navigating the Core Issues in Research Articles
by Richard GrossNow in its seventh edition, this book brings together 30 classic and contemporary studies in psychology to show students how to analyse key studies in the field, understand how classic theories are constantly revisited by modern researchers, and develop the skills required to write about psychology in exams and essays.Pulled from each of the five major areas of psychology – cognitive, developmental, individual differences, social, and biopsychology – the studies cover such topics as language and memory, attachment, mental disorder, bystander intervention, and near-death experiences. Each chapter looks at the background and context to a classic and contemporary study and provides a summary of them, before going on to evaluate areas of agreement and convergence, disagreement and divergence, and strengths and weaknesses. Each of these areas focuses on theoretical, methodological/statistical, and ethical issues. Finally, suggestions are made regarding applications, implications, and future research directions. In so doing, the book helps students learn how to deal with primary sources, including how to extract the most relevant information, assess strengths and weaknesses, know what to look for when evaluating a study, and understand how it relates to other research.Bridging the gap from A-level to degree level study, this is the ideal resource for undergraduate students in psychology.

Khilafat in History and Indian Politics
by Zaheer AliThis book is a brief historical account of Khilafat, an Islamic political institution mired in controversies from its inception. It is an attempt to present an objective critique of the Islamic polity that, in a way, was primarily responsible for crafting schisms in Islam with its commencement. By the time the last Khilafat of the Ottomans came to an end in the aftershock of the Second World War, the Muslim political elite in India launched a movement for the restoration and continuation of the Ottoman Khilafat. The most paradoxical dimension of the issue was that in the Arab peninsula, the epicenter of Islam, the people were struggling to cast away the yoke of the Ottoman Khilafat, then why were the Indian Muslims emotionally involved in a movement that was vehemently condemned and assailed by a majority of Muslims outside the Indian subcontinent? This title is co-published with Aakar Books. Print editions not for sale in South Asia (India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Bhutan)

Kids on Earth: The Learning Potential of 5 Billion Minds
by Howard Blumenthal Robert C. PiantaIn this visionary effort, students take the lead in reimagining public education for the twenty-first century, advocating for a more active, personalized, and relational approach to learningTwenty-first century youth are hungry for new ways to learn. Their world is global, mobile, and rich with opportunities previous generations couldn’t possibly have imagined. As they make clear in this book, the old standards of schooling no longer apply. In Kids on Earth, Howard Blumenthal and Robert C. Pianta go straight to the source—students themselves—to rethink public education for the five billion young minds projected to be learning by 2050. Blumenthal and Pianta interview children and teenagers from more than seventy countries, along with parents, teachers, and learning experts, to build, from their perspectives, a scalable global framework for radical educational change. “New School,” in contrast to old school, is a foundational concept with three guiding pillars: learning is active, learning is personal, and learning is relational. Its teachings emphasize cognitive science, memory, and relationships—aligning learning with contemporary lived experience. New School also appreciates “Not School,” external instruction that involves media, technology, and other forms of learning. Integrating these spheres, Blumenthal and Pianta argue, would better reflect our hyperconnected, innovative world, motivating students to succeed within it.Kids on Earth calls not for reform but reinvention, an ambitious, all-hands-on-deck effort to remake school for current and future generations, preparing them best for global citizenship. Unlike many books on education, this volume gives kids the chance to make it alright.
Kierkegaard and Mysticism: Reception, Influence, Resonance (Contemporary Theological Explorations in Mysticism)
by Hjördis Becker-LindenthalKierkegaard and Mysticism brings together scholars who show that reading Søren Kierkegaard from the perspective of mysticism not only sheds new light on the Dane’s thought but also offers a fresh approach to mysticism as such, considering its relevance for existential questions, ethics, inter-faith dialogues, and socio-political criticism. The three sections focus on: reception history, considering the mystical writers who, even when mediated through secondary sources, were most formative for Kierkegaard’s thought; mystical concepts such as silence, unio mystica and the relation of the contemplative and active life in various religious traditions; Kierkegaard’s relevance for twentieth-century mystical writers and contemporary spirituality. Whereas previous scholarship has approached Kierkegaard’s relation to mysticism mainly under a negative paradigm, this volume contributes to a greater understanding of the mystical dimensions of his thought. It will be of interest not only to Kierkegaard scholars but also to theologians and philosophers working on mysticism and intellectual history.

Kinship and Gender: An Introduction
by Linda Stone Diane E. KingThis fully revised seventh edition of Kinship and Gender: An Introduction explores kinship in today’s globalized, increasingly mobile world, and how family structures continue to influence the varied roles that men and women play in different cultures. Detailed case studies and cross-cultural examples help students understand how such generalizations are experienced in real life. The authors also consider the ramifications of current social problems and recent developments in reproductive technology as they demonstrate the relevance of kinship and gender to students’ lives. The new edition contains a revised introduction highlighting the disaggregation of marriage and reproduction; new sections on third gender, nonbinary, and trans identities; new case studies on spiritual kinship; as well as explorations of genetic and ancestral kinship paradigms, new reproductive technologies, and a more robust global perspective throughout. Pedagogical features include suggestions for classroom media, a glossary, an appendix, and downloadable PowerPoint slides.Kinship and Gender: An Introduction provides a broad, yet nuanced introduction to the field, and is essential reading for students taking their first steps into anthropology, gender studies, and sociology.
Kith and Kin and the Lived Experience of Persons with Intellectual Disabilities
by Anne-Marie CallusThis book considers the ways in which the lives of persons with intellectual disability are closely interconnected with those of the persons around them. The ways in which these interconnections work and the effects they have are examined by taking a very close look at specific instances in the lives of persons with intellectual disability, taken from published research and other sources and covering various life domains, including education, employment, creative work, socialising and family life. The fourteen case-study chapters (covering Australia, France, Ireland, Italy, Malta, Spain, the UK, and the USA) focus on the interactions between the person with intellectual disability concerned and other persons. The analyses use Paul Ricoeur’s concept of the interrelational self to show how the lives and selves of persons with intellectual disability are intimately intertwined with those of the persons who come into contact with them. Furthermore, it is argued that what we learn about the deep connections between persons with intellectual disability and those who play a significant role in their lives can be applied to general human experience. What happens in each one-to-one interaction is of paramount importance. The analyses are based on Max Van Manen’s phenomenonological research approach and critical phenomenology. The innovative approach thus created provides fresh insights and a different method for carrying out research and analysis in the area. The short format of the chapters in the main part of the book makes it suitable for use on a wide range of courses in disability studies as well as in other disciplines and areas of study, such as psychology, education, legal studies and childhood studies among others. It also makes it accessible for advocates and practitioners working with persons with intellectual disability.
Knowledge and Rational Action: Why What We Know Matters for the Rationality of What We Do (Routledge Studies in Epistemology)
by Roman HeilThis book motivates and systematically develops the view that knowledge should be at the centre of our theory of practical rationality.“Only act on what you know!”—the book offers the first comprehensive defence of this slogan in the form of a knowledge-based decision theory. The proposed view is shown to be the most straightforward explanation of emerging bodies of evidence for a link between knowledge and rational action. The book provides novel solutions to well-known challenges that invoke high-stakes scenarios, seemingly rational actions based on reasonable but false beliefs, and decision-making under risk and uncertainty. The emerging view brings together traditional and formal approaches to epistemology and the study of practical rationality. The resulting knowledge-based decision theory is embedded in a rich normative landscape, encompassing innovative accounts of excuses, rational acceptance and the simplification of reasoning.Knowledge and Rational Action will be of great interest to researchers and graduate students interested in epistemology, practical rationality and decision theory.
