Muslim Writing, Writing Muslimness in Europe: Transcultural Perspectives (Literary Criticism and Cultural Theory)
by Carmen Zamorano Llena Billy Gray Carolina León Vegas Carles Magrinyà BadiellaThroughout the first two decades of the twenty-first century, the so-called Muslim question has intermittently, though persistently, taken centre stage in Western media and political discourses. In terms of culture within the European context, there is also a substantial body of literature that has engaged with Western anxieties projected onto the Muslim "Other" and, in particular, the Muslim migrant "Other". Literary criticism of Muslim writing and writing about Muslims in Europe has often highlighted the need to offer a more nuanced articulation of Muslim identity that contributes to challenging such othering practices.Critical studies on Muslim writing produced over the last two decades have predominantly focused on contemporary literature, and the novel in particular, and they have often centred on specific linguistic and national frameworks. This collection of essays adds complexity to existing analyses of contemporary Muslim writing and writing about Muslims and Islam in the European context by emphasizing the comparative perspective of writings produced in different epochs and different linguistic and cultural contexts. Drawing on transcultural and world literature perspectives, Muslim writing is redefined so as to incorporate genres other than the novel and critical approaches that expand on disciplinary redefinitions of literature and literary studies. The thematic focus and the rigorous in-depth analysis of the different case studies will make this collection relevant to students and academics within the fields of literary and cultural studies, sociology and anthropology, as well as to those in European studies and global studies.

My Family is Back: Multi-Family Therapy for Eating Disorders
by June Alexander Julian Baudinet Ivan EislerMy Family is Back challenges conventional methods of eating disorder care by explaining the effectiveness of Multi-Family Therapy (MFT) in helping children recover from anorexia nervosa.MFT is an intensive method involving a small group of families working together towards recovery. Building on previous work that focuses on mobilising family resources as a major factor in therapeutic change, MFT introduces a new element: encouraging groups of families to work together to rediscover their strengths, overcome feelings of isolation, and find renewed hope. The authors describe how MFT works and how it can enhance the treatment of eating disorders by improving service delivery and reducing costs. Eighteen families serve as the ‘voice of experience,’ their stories breathing life into the science. The families provide a long-term perspective and reflection on their MFT participation. Their stories emphasise the importance of early intervention, family involvement, and collaboration in overcoming anorexia. Strategies for family members, friends, and professionals illustrate the evidence base for this model of care. This book, offering an accessible guide to MFT, has international appeal for families of children with eating disorders, health professionals, and healthcare providers.

Myth, Manhood, and Curriculum: Towards Truth, Self-Cultivation, and Reparation (Studies in Curriculum Theory Series)
by James P. BurnsThis book explores the historicized complexities of myths of manhood through a curriculum study that examines the historical emergence of the current propagandization of attacks on manhood in US public life.Narratives about manhood and masculinity are often predicated on concepts of violence, such as the “war on men/boys,” which posits a “demasculization” of men that threatens the global white nation. In this book, Burns connects the current moral panic about manhood to a pattern of ethnonationalist and Christian nationalist ideas that pervade culture and contribute to homophobia, attacks on women’s reproductive rights, restrictions on academic freedom, free speech, and school curricula, and which were grafted onto pre-existing fears targeted against communists, socialists, and dissent. A central tenet of the curriculum studies field holds that reactivation of the past can help us to better understand the problems of the present. As such, this study connects contemporary revanchist hysteria about the need to rehabilitate manhood to similar religious, political, economic, militarist, racial, gendered, and sexualized mythologies of manhood deeply embedded in the history of the US. It also speculates on some possibilities for transcending the historicized mythologies of manhood through ethical and aesthetic engagement in the search for truth, self-cultivation, and reparation. This interdisciplinary and highly original volume will appeal to scholars, faculty, and post-graduate students in curriculum studies, teacher education, gender and sexuality studies, history, and religious studies.

Narrating the Soviet Era in Russian School History Textbooks (Routledge Histories of Central and Eastern Europe)
by Olga KonkkaThis study focuses on how Russian history textbooks published between 1992 and 2021 dealt with the topic of the Soviet period (1917–1991).Representations of this part of Russia’s past in school manuals have provoked vivid debates and bolstered government intervention in the field, while a gradual shift towards a less critical narrative of the USSR in more recent textbooks is often presented as directed by Vladimir Putin. This study combines research into these texts and inquiry into those who write, publish, approve, or criticize them. Bringing together these perspectives provides a more complex view of school textbooks as final products of both top-down and bottom-up processes. This volume is aimed at postgraduates, researchers, and academics specializing in Soviet history, contemporary Russian politics and society, and history education and textbooks.

Narratives of Consent and Reproductive Subjects: Tales of Invisibility
by Samantha Halliday Jacqueline Nicholls Rebecca BrioneConsent is the golden principle that determines the legality of most medical treatment. However, whilst choice is the much-vaunted central tenet of maternity care, its importance emphasised in policy documents, the lived experience is often rather different, particularly in the case of individuals constructed as ‘other’. This collection brings together a range of researchers from multiple disciplines to address the issue of choice in the context of reproduction, focussing upon narratives of consent as they pertain to reproductive subjects who all too often are rendered invisible by the law, by the healthcare professionals treating them, or by society. It explores the contours of consent in England and Wales, engaging with reproductive justice by focussing upon the way in which reproductive subjects are othered, treated differently due to their skin colour, their genetic makeup, the fact that they have a serious mental illness or even those who do not want to be mothers. It presents original research, bringing together multiple perspectives in examining the way in which individuals are rendered invisible in the context of reproductive healthcare. The book will be essential reading for academics and professionals in law, nursing, medicine, midwifery, sociology, ethics and anthropology.
Narratives of Non-English L2 Language Teachers
by Nur Yiğitoğlu Aptoula Melinda ReicheltThis book highlights the narratives of teachers of non-English languages. Much of what we know about L2 teaching is based on conclusions drawn from research on teaching in English as an L2, with languages besides English being given short shrift or ignored entirely. Examining L2 teaching practices related to non-English languages can help us gain a more comprehensive understanding of language pedagogy. This is because different target languages play different roles in the contexts in which they are taught, which influences teaching and learning in significant ways. The contributions in this book include chapters from L2 instructors who teach a wide range of languages in different settings, including different geographical, sociolinguistic, and institutional contexts. With narratives focused on pedagogical practices and practical materials, this resource will be beneficial to pre-service teachers, teacher educators, and researchers in language education, as well as in-service teacher training programs.

Nationalist Entrepreneurs and Territorial Disputes in Northeast Asia: Sustaining Public Interest (Rethinking Asia and International Relations)
by Jiun BangThis book explores how nationalism surrounding territorial sovereignty requires a domestic nationalist ecosystem, aka the Nationalist Industrial Complex, to sustain public interest. It focuses on nationalist entrepreneurs representing local merchants who commodify nationalism by building businesses that explicitly incorporate elements of territorial sovereignty protection, e.g. food and apparel with the insignia of a disputed territory. The author argues that this ‘mundane’ everyday activity of commodification co-constitutes public interest surrounding territorial sovereignty and explains why nationalism might be more contingent than permanent. Despite its prevalence the commodification of nationalism is one of the most under-explored areas. This fresh insight on how everyday nationalism can influence ordinary people’s understanding of or attention to nationalistic issues will be of interest to scholars and students of East Asian international relations, nationalism, security studies, area studies, and comparative politics.
Natural Theology: A Reassessment (Routledge New Critical Thinking in Religion, Theology and Biblical Studies)
by Andrew Ter LokeNatural Theology: A Reassessment offers corrections to widespread misinterpretations of the authoritative sources of Christian theology and shows that these sources affirm a traditional view of natural theology that refers to what can be rationally believed about God without using religious doctrines as premises. Contrary to popular misconceptions, Hume and Kant did not successfully rebut the arguments of natural theology, which are still being defended today. This book develops a more rigorous deductively valid formulation of the Cosmological, Teleological, and Moral Arguments for the existence of God and shows how the truth of their premises can be defended, thus demonstrating the soundness of these arguments which show that God exists. Using a unique approach which engages with philosophical theology of both analytic and continental traditions, it offers new arguments to address long-standing problems in epistemology of theology concerning foundationalism, epistemic circularity, divine transcendence, the culturally variant notion of human reason, the lack of consensus among experts, and the accusation of anthropomorphism and ontotheology and provides a thorough response to theological objections, the god-of-the-gaps objection, and the objection that arguments are open to revisions. The author develops an interdisciplinary approach involving theology, philosophy, and science to move the discussion ahead in a new and significant way.
Nature Appreciation: Knowledge as Art
by Anna UrsynIf asked what all people can agree with, we can see one answer: we all love Nature, one way or another. In this book, impossible creatures (one can perceive as atoms, molecules, or minerals) playfully deliver computer codes, with an underlying notion that everything is connected: in nature, materials, sciences, techniques, computing, and the arts. In this innovative space, these characters introduce programming. While coding is intertwined into simple facts, Nature Appreciation shows ways we appreciate nature, thus, helping us learn in a playful, nonjudgmental way.Knowledge is divided into subjects and classes at schools, colleges, then universities. Facts, processes, and rules cannot be separated. They are all connected: biochemistry, product materiality changes from matter to energy and vice versa, and conversion of one state into another. In this book, they are considered as different ways of living, such as: Geo, earth, soil, minerals, and natural resources experienced when walking on the ground. Water, transportation, ecosystems, leisure time, and energy related to water environs. Air, energy, space and planets travel, galatic objects, space junk. One can fly or carry materials and devices through it. Waves, communication, transformation, music, light, color - everything related to light, electromagnetic waves, oscillation, and vibration. Also Visually Static World, Space Exploration, and Deep Underwater are also included. It is a part of the “Knowledge Through the Arts” series, consisting of:Dance Code - Dance Steps as a CodeNew Storytelling - Learning Through MetaphorsCode Appreciation - Reshaping KnowledgeNature Appreciation - Knowledge as Art
Nature's Blueprint for Business: Harnessing the Hidden Power of Edges
by Ines GarciaTapping into proven strategies, mechanisms and patterns that have been fine-tuned over 3.8 billion years, this book bridges the gap between the natural world and the business world and explores how to develop resilient organizations and businesses using lessons from nature. The science of biomimicry is an emerging force in helping us to gaze afresh at the world around us, often inspiring technological inspiration, but we have been slow to look at the organizational and relationship models that are all around us. This book contends that natural abundance flourishes at the edges, where one environmental element contacts another, and that these relationships that have been successful for millennia have endless lessons for us about how we organize ourselves. Each chapter starts with a clear example of a problem that a team or organization might face, goes on to consider a range of natural examples and offer practical suggestions to incorporate nature’s wisdom in the business world, and concludes with success stories of people and organizations already embracing the principles outlined in the book. Employing these principles and aided by suggested activities, readers will develop personalized plans, tailored to their unique situations, to lead their teams’ evolution into thriving organizations.Observing edges, spaces and boundaries shows that is these are where magic happens—and with this book, leaders of all types of teams and organizations will be empowered to make real and immediate changes in their own contexts.
