Turning: A Year in the Water

by Jessica J. Lee

Longlisted for the 2018 Frank Hegyi Award for Emerging Authors&“Jessica J. Lee is a writer of rare and exhilarating grace. In Turning, she sounds the depths of lakes and her own life, never flinching from darkness, surfacing to fresh understandings of her place in the welter of natural and human history. A beautiful, moody, bracing debut.&” —Kate Harris, award-winning author of Lands of Lost BordersThrough the heat of summer to the frozen depths of winter, Lee traces her journey swimming through 52 lakes in a single year, swimming through fear and heartbreak to find her place in the worldJessica J. Lee swims through all four seasons and especially loves the winter. "I long for the ice. The sharp cut of freezing water on my feet. The immeasurable black of the lake at its coldest. Swimming then means cold, and pain, and elation." At the age of twenty-eight, Jessica, who grew up in Canada and lived in England, finds herself in Berlin. Alone. Lonely, with lowered spirits thanks to some family history and a broken heart, she is there, ostensibly, to write a thesis. And though that is what she does daily, what increasingly occupies her is swimming. So she makes a decision that she believes will win her back her confidence and independence: she will swim fifty-two of the lakes around Berlin, no matter what the weather or season. She is aware that this particular landscape is not without its own ghosts and history. This is the story of a beautiful obsession: of the thrill of a still, turquoise lake, of cracking the ice before submerging, of floating under blue skies, of tangled weeds and murkiness, of cool, fresh, spring swimming—of facing past fears of near-drowning and of breaking free. When she completes her year of swimming, Jessica finds she has new strength, and she has also found friends and has gained some understanding of how the landscape both haunts and holds us. This book is for everyone who loves swimming, who wishes they could push themselves beyond caution, who understands the deep pleasure of using the body's strength, who knows what it is to abandon all thought and float home to the surface.

Turner Syndrome: Pathophysiology, Diagnosis and Treatment

by Patricia Y. Fechner

Comprehensive and practical, this is a unique and multidisciplinary resource for the clinician caring for the girl or woman with Turner syndrome. Although approximately one in 2000 women are affected, many have not been diagnosed; as the advent of prenatal genetic testing becomes more prevalent, the diagnosis of Turner syndrome will be made much more frequently. There is therefore a greater need for this single source that provides the clinician with the information required to care for this multifaceted disorder. The opening chapters discuss the biology, genetics and current standard of care for females with Turner syndrome in order to provide proper background and context for the remaining chapters. The main section of the book, taking a body system approach, is comprised of chapters written by an expert in his or her subspecialty and will discuss pathophysiology and diagnosis, as well as therapeutic options. Reproductive, cardiac, renal, endocrine, neurologic, musculoskeletal, and sensory issues and symptoms associated with Turner syndrome are all covered in detail. Additional chapters describe current resources available to both caregiver and patient as well as future directions for research and management. Currently, there are no similar books on the market that take an all-inclusive, multidisciplinary approach in the care of individuals with Turner syndrome. As such, this book should be the standard of care for management of this challenging and multifaceted condition.

Turner: Second Edition (World of Art #0)

by Graham Reynolds

With clear writing, this is the ideal introduction to J. M. W. Turner’s life and work for anyone interested in British painting in its golden age. Few British artists have ever achieved such a wide range of style in oil painting, watercolor, drawing, and engraving as J. M. W. Turner. This classic book in the World of Art series traces the artist’s career from youthful, picturesque views and watercolors of Gothic ruins, to romantic landscapes and historical compositions, to the darker abstracts of his later career. Though these late works were incomprehensible to his contemporaries, Turner is understood today as one of the greatest British painters because of these pioneering explorations into abstraction, which prefigured the art of the twentieth century. In Turner, Graham Reynolds weaves together the artist’s biography and criticism of his work through all phases of his career, paying particular attention to the importance of foreign travel and the influence of Claude Lorrain and Nicolas Poussin. First published in 1969, Turner has long served as an outstanding introduction to Turner’s life and art. Now with full-color illustrations and a new introduction by David Brown, this updated and revised edition reflects recent discoveries and interpretations of Turner’s work, and will serve as the best available study of the artist for a new generation of readers.

But now, as ailing matriarch Viola finds herself forced to leave her home and move in with her eldest son, the family discovers that the house is worth just a tenth of its mortgage. The Turner children are called home to decide its fate and to reckon with how each of their pasts haunts—and shapes—their family’s future.Praised by Ayana Mathis as “utterly moving” and “un-putdownable,” The Turner House brings us a colorful, complicated brood full of love and pride, sacrifice and unlikely inheritances.
