Social Work and the Psychosocial Journey Out of Far-Right Extremism (Skills for Social Work Practice)

by Danny W. Carroll II

Over the last 30 years, domestic far-right extremism has risen to become the greatest threat to peace and safety in the United States. In the last few years alone, racialized, minoritized, and marginalized individuals and communities have been increasingly forced to feel the pain and experience the consequences of domestic far-right terrorism. Supposing academics, community leaders, and elected officials seek to combat the rising threat of far-right extremism in the United States, a greater focus must be paid to the lived experiences of men and women seeking to exit extremist groups. This study aimed to better understand the psychosocial processes involved in the disengagement and/or de-radicalization journey of former far-right extremists. Additionally, this study sought to understand better the potential role social work could play in the disengagement and de-radicalization of far-right extremists seeking to exit a life of hate and extremism. A constructivist grounded theory approach provided the framework for this qualitative study. Semi-structured interviews with 19 former white nationalist extremists recruited through community informants and snowball sampling were used to answer the research question: What are the psychosocial processes involved in the disengagement and de-radicalization journey of former far-right extremists, and how do they develop in society? To date, there has not been a study located utilizing constructivist grounded theory in disengagement and de-radicalization studies. Additionally, a theory of disengagement and de-radicalization has yet to be explored. This study sought to explore and conceptualize latent social patterns and structures within the disengagement and de-radicalization journey as a means to construct a theoretical frame to better understand one’s journey from a life of hate. Study findings emerged from over 3,500 coded items from 18 transcripts. Eight themes emerged from the data, and a theoretical model conceptualizing the psychosocial processes involved in the journey out of far-right extremism is introduced.

Cultural Resurgence in Soviet Russia, 1917–1935

by Ashoke Ranjan Thakur

This volume presents a new cultural history of the transformation of Russia to the Soviet Union. It looks at how the literature, the sciences and the arts played a key role in the emergence from a largely agrarian economy to world order. It traces the multiple revolutions that resulted in the overthrow of the Tsar’s regime during World War I; society, polity, cultural life and the economy saw major upheavals as the country went into turmoil following the War and the revolution. However, the volume highlights the continuities from the previous regime, as the communists built on the work done by their predecessors, including monarchists. Finally, the volume connects it to the larger currents in Europe and Asia at the time. The volume will be of great interest to scholars and students of modern Europe, history, social movements, and communism. It will also find interest among general readers.

Fourier Series and Boundary Value Problems with Engineering Applications (Textbooks in Mathematics)

by Youssef Raffoul

This book is a comprehensive and time-tested guide to the mathematical theory of Fourier series and boundary value problems, with a strong emphasis on engineering applications. Over the past two decades, Fourier Series and Boundary Value Problems with Engineering Applications has been rigorously refined and tested in classroom settings, ensuring its effectiveness as a teaching and learning resource. The journey begins with a thorough development of Fourier series, a cornerstone of modern mathematics and engineering. The Fourier series provides a powerful framework for analyzing periodic functions and decomposing complex signals into simpler sinusoidal components. This foundational knowledge is then extended to boundary value problems, which arise naturally in the study of physical phenomena such as heat flow, vibrations, and wave propagation.A distinctive feature of this book is its focus on applications in both rectangular and spherical coordinates. These coordinate systems are essential for modeling problems in diverse engineering contexts. Additionally, the book addresses partial differential equations on unbounded domains and ordinary differential equations.Whether you are a student encountering Fourier series and boundary value problems for the first time, an educator seeking a reliable and classroom-tested resource, or a professional looking to refresh your knowledge, this book offers a clear exposition, practical focus, and extensive problem sets, making it an indispensable companion for mastering the mathematical tools that underpin modern engineering.

Systemic-Dialogical Therapy with Individuals: Finding One's Place (The Systemic Thinking and Practice Series)

by Paolo Bertrando Claudia Lini

In this book, Paolo Bertrando and Claudia Lini provide a comprehensive and cutting-edge overview of the systemic-dialogical approach, adapted to the ever-evolving requirements of modern-day therapy with individuals. Following on from the field-defining work Systemic Therapy with Individuals, and easily used as a companion, this book introduces a new dialogical approach which will encourage practising therapists to adopt a collaborative and empowered stance in their work. The authors interweave clinical examples and transcripts of sessions collated from over a decade of work to illustrate the applied benefits of this approach in the contemporary therapeutic space. The case studies include work with those experiencing the oppression of patriarchal relationships, social and emotional isolation, physical abuse and pathological shame, reinvigorating and modernising the therapist’s understanding of these lived experiences. Moving from general concepts to practical issues, the book explores queer theory, feminist theory, non-traditional family formats, and the impact of neoliberalism. The holistic and systemic approach will guide the reader to work better with clients from all genders, races and economic situations. Building on the foundations of systemic therapy, the theories develop our understanding of emotions and the body, while Bertrando and Lini introduce the concept of ‘finding one’s place’ as a means of encouraging individual positional responsibility.Presenting an empathetic and inclusive understanding of contemporary life and psychic experiences, as well as personal, couple and familial relationships, this book provides invaluable techniques on how to conduct sessions, and will benefit students and practitioners of psychotherapy, including systemic family therapists, psychoanalysts, psychiatrists, psychologists, psychiatric nurses, occupational therapists, and social workers.

A Contemporary History of Marx’s Capital: The Inexhaustible and the Unfinished (Marx and Marxisms)

by Paolo Favilli

Paolo Favilli provides both students and scholars with an original reading of themes and issues found in Karl Marx’s Das Kapital and its connections with present- day challenges. By way of continuous cross- referencing between present and past, Favilli demonstrates that claims regarding the scientific status of Das Kapital, advanced by countless texts since its original publication, are themselves deeply imbued by the ‘spirit of the times’. If in 1963 Jean-Paul Sartre could write that Marxism was the unsurpassable philosophical horizon of our times, what could make an undergraduate student today consider such a claim plausible?Informed by the latest research on Marxist theory and decades of teaching the Philosophy of History, Favilli employs a didactic approach stimulating student engagement and learning opportunities in the classroom. This approach allows for a better understanding of relationship between the present and the multiple temporalities that characterise and periodise the contemporary era. What follows is a critique of the contemporary academy for its hangover of post-1989 nuovismo (cult of novelty) and inability to make the proper distinctions between Marxism-as-party-state, the works of Karl Marx, and Marxism as an object of history. This led to the spectacle where after 1989, those who had spent most of their careers as Marxist-hued scholars not only abandoned this identity but also spurned any recognition that Marx and Marxism were worthwhile objects of enquiry. This book was first published in Italian as A proposito de ‘Il capitale’..., Il lungo presente e i miei studenti. Corso di storia contemporanea (Milan: FrancoAngeli, 2021). This English translation includes a new foreword by the author.
