How the Word Is Passed: A Reckoning with the History of Slavery Across America
by Clint SmithThis &“important and timely&” (Drew Faust, Harvard Magazine) #1 New York Times bestseller examines the legacy of slavery in America—and how both history and memory continue to shape our everyday lives. Beginning in his hometown of New Orleans, Clint Smith leads the reader on an unforgettable tour of monuments and landmarks—those that are honest about the past and those that are not—that offer an intergenerational story of how slavery has been central in shaping our nation's collective history, and ourselves. It is the story of the Monticello Plantation in Virginia, the estate where Thomas Jefferson wrote letters espousing the urgent need for liberty while enslaving more than four hundred people. It is the story of the Whitney Plantation, one of the only former plantations devoted to preserving the experience of the enslaved people whose lives and work sustained it. It is the story of Angola, a former plantation-turned-maximum-security prison in Louisiana that is filled with Black men who work across the 18,000-acre land for virtually no pay. And it is the story of Blandford Cemetery, the final resting place of tens of thousands of Confederate soldiers. A deeply researched and transporting exploration of the legacy of slavery and its imprint on centuries of American history, How the Word Is Passed illustrates how some of our country's most essential stories are hidden in plain view—whether in places we might drive by on our way to work, holidays such as Juneteenth, or entire neighborhoods like downtown Manhattan, where the brutal history of the trade in enslaved men, women, and children has been deeply imprinted. Informed by scholarship and brought to life by the story of people living today, Smith's debut work of nonfiction is a landmark of reflection and insight that offers a new understanding of the hopeful role that memory and history can play in making sense of our country and how it has come to be. James Joyce’s Legacies in Contemporary Irish Women’s Writing (Routledge Studies in Irish Literature)
by Annalisa MastronardiJames Joyce’s Legacies in Contemporary Irish Women’s Writing is a ground-breaking study that, for the first time, explores in depth the influence of James Joyce on Irish women writers, from his contemporaries to more recent voices. With a particular focus on Anne Enright’s The Gathering, Eimear McBride’s A Girl Is a Half-formed Thing and Emilie Pine’s Ruth & Pen, this book examines how Irish women writers have engaged with Joyce’s legacy.Unlike their male counterparts, who have often felt overshadowed by Joyce’s influence, Irish women writers have embraced and expanded upon his work, viewing it not as a constraint but as an opening to new creative possibilities. This book will be of particular value to Joyce scholars working in feminism and reception studies, as well as students of Irish literature and women’s writing. It offers fresh insights into the evolving landscape of Irish literature and complicates Harold Bloom’s theory of the Anxiety of Influence, demonstrating how women writers perceive canonical figures like Joyce not as rivals, but as trailblazers.

A History of Economic Thought in Sweden (The Routledge History of Economic Thought)
by Lars MagnussonSituating key texts and writers in their proper historical context, this book presents a history of Swedish economic thinking from early modern times to the present day.Highlighting key elements of Swedish political, economic and social history allows the book to shed new light on important parts of the story including the development of neo-classical economics from the late 19th century - associated with leading names such as Knut Wicksell, Gustav Cassel and Eli Heckscher – and the rise of the so-called Stockholm school in the 1920´s and 30´s. But the book also goes back further to explore the Swedish economic literature of the 18th century, particularly its more “liberal” version of mercantilism and cameralism, as well as early modern and medieval developments. Throughout, the book emphasizes the unique nature of much of the economic thinking emanating from Sweden. Emulation and adaption of political economic thinking imported from abroad – primarily the UK, France and German speaking countries - is an important part of this story, but this is shown to be an active process which has resulted in great originality in Swedish economic thought. This book will be of interest to readers in the history of economic thought, economic history, the history of ideas and Swedish history.

GomashieThis book combines different decolonial approaches from around the world to offer a roadmap for updating names and naming practices, restoring and protecting precolonial ones, and reimagining or recontextualizing the relationship between place, identity, and names. In a postcolonial context, naming often serves as a bitter reminder of past harms through commemorative naming practices, whether through a system of baptismal names or a former colony’s approach to dealing with the names that the colonizer left behind. This volume assembles authors who hail from formerly colonized regions of the Americas, Europe, Africa, and Asia to engage with this problem of decolonizing names in the twenty-first century from a global perspective. Her Place in the Woods: The Life of Helen Hoover
by David HakensenThe biography of one of Minnesota&’s most beloved nature writers, from her career in the city to her rustic cabin on Gunflint Lake During the late 1950s through the early 1970s, Helen Hoover&’s stories and essays of life in the wilderness on northern Minnesota&’s Gunflint Lake, published in popular magazines and several bestselling books (including The Gift of the Deer in 1966 and A Place in the Woods in 1969), found millions of fans and earned her accolades alongside nature writers like Sigurd Olson, Rachel Carson, Sally Carrighar, and Calvin Rutstrum. Hoover&’s own unlikely history of leaving a corporate career in Chicago for a small cabin without electricity or running water—with no interest in hunting or fishing—is just one chapter of the remarkable life that David Hakensen describes in Her Place in the Woods. This first complete biography illuminates how Helen Hoover (1910–1984) made a place for herself and for countless readers in, as she put it, the world of her time. Hoover defied convention. Self-trained and without an academic degree, she worked in the male-dominated metallurgical field as a researcher at International Harvester, where she solved a long-standing problem with the manufacture of discs for farm implements and earned a patent. She and her husband, Adrian, a commercial artist, had long dreamed of moving to a remote cabin in the woods. As they started the long return drive to Chicago after a summer spent on Gunflint Lake, they finally made the leap, quitting their jobs with a long-distance phone call from Grand Marais and figuring out the rest as they went. The Hoovers were woefully unprepared for life off the grid and slowly learned how to convert sheds into chicken coops and fend off bears. Social encounters presented their own challenges, with Helen&’s fiery personality leading to clashes with hunters and other Gunflint neighbors. Gradually, the Hoovers settled into the rhythms of their remote homestead, and Helen would craft a prolific literary livelihood from her keen observations of nature and encounters with animals in the surrounding woods. Her Place in the Woods captures both an awakening to the power and fragility of the natural world and the efforts and talents of an extraordinary woman defining herself as a writer. Though Helen Hoover would move on from the secluded North Woods, as she wrote in her final book, The Years of the Forest, &“From this time on it would be both here and with me wherever I might be, as long as I should live.&”
