The Soldier's Choice: City and Soul in the Life of Classical Athens (Cornell Studies in Classical Philology)
by Hayden Pelliccia Charles Brittain Harvey Yunis Jeffrey RustenIn the pitch of battle, according to Pericles, the Athenian citizen-soldier chooses to die rather than leave undefended the democratic principles that Athens embodies: this defines The Soldier's Choice. The great war between Sparta and Athens dominated the Greek world for twenty-seven years (431–404 BCE) and shaped much of the culture it bequeathed to posterity. The Sparta of that era did not produce writers, but Athens did: Thucydides, an unsuccessful general in the war, became its first historian; Aristophanes, Greece's greatest comic poet, devoted the first quarter century of his career to plays about the war; the foundational figure of Western philosophy, Plato, grew up in its shadow and populated his works with men of the war generation. Because their writings belong to different genres, these three seminal figures have rarely been treated together, an oversight The Soldier's Choice decisively corrects. As prominent members of a small intellectual community, each of the three wrote in profound engagement with the currents represented by the others. The contributors to this volume, experts in the relevant genres, reveal and explore these long-neglected interactions.Contributors: Sara Forsdyke, Edith Foster, Terence Irwin, Richard Kraut, Mary Margaret McCabe, Heinz-Günther Nesselrath, Hunter R. Return of the Osprey: A Season of Flight and Wonder
by David GessnerA memoir, tribute to a once-endangered species, and natural history, Return of the Osprey recounts the many discoveries David Gessner made when he immersed himself for an entire nesting season in the lives of the ospreys that had returned to his seagirt corner of Cape Cod. The osprey, hailed by Roger Tory Peterson as the symbol of the New England coast, all but vanished during the 1950s and '60s because of the ravages of DDT. In the next few decades, however, the birds returned, slowly at first and then in a rush. Writing with passion, humor, and a reverence for the natural world, Gessner interweaves the stories of the nesting osprey pairs he observed with his own readjustment to life on the windblown, beautiful, and increasingly developed landscape he had known as a child. With a new preface from Gessner and foreword by Helen Macdonald, Return of the Osprey celebrates one of nature's most remarkable creatures, as well as our own limitless capacity for wonder.
Hanah's Sheep and Cattle: A Novel (NIU Series in Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies)
by Shira GorshmanHanah's Sheep and Cattle is based on the improbable but true story of a strong, secular Jewish woman and former Zionist pioneer navigating the turbulent sweep of Soviet history. Shira Gorshman's autobiographical novel provides unique insights into Jewish life in 1920s Palestine and 1930s Soviet Crimea, but also covers recurrent universal themes: the tribulations of women, the value of sacrificing for the greater good, the virtue of hard work, and the inherent worth of creativity. The reader of Hanah's Sheep and Cattle first encounters Hanah as an idealistic and outspoken young, single mother and manager of livestock operations on a Soviet Jewish commune. But the privation of the prewar years, the Stalinist purges of the 1930s, and the horrors of World War II take their toll. Despite it all, hard work and creativity enable Hanah to survive and, ultimately, to transform her grief into art.A Yiddish Book Center Translation
Desiring Thai Men: Asian Gay Media and Transforming Masculinities
by Peter A. Jackson Narupon DuangwisesDesiring Thai Men traces the transformative influence of vernacular Thai-language media on Thailand's gay communities from the 1980s through the 2010s. Narupon Duangwises and Peter A. Jackson analyze dramatic changes in the visual representation and languaging of masculine desire and sexual identity among Thai gay men that were reflected in Thai gay magazines and gendered practices in Bangkok's gay bars, fitness centers, and video chatrooms. Multiple masculine identities emerged in Thailand's communities of men who have sex with men from the intersecting influences of commercial gay media and gay venues. Distinctive class-based, contextualized, and flexible masculinities evolved among ethnically diverse Thai gay men in a capitalist setting of print and online media and expanding consumerist lifestyles. Desiring Thai Men argues that evolving forms of masculinity among Thai men who pursue men offer insights for reexamining class dynamics in transnational queer and media studies and for the applicability of hegemonic masculinity beyond Western contexts.
Access Vernaculars: Disability and Accessible Design in Contemporary Russia
by Cassandra HartblayAccess Vernaculars explores moments when accessible design fails. Observing how both disabled and nondisabled people in Russia recognize and point out poorly executed accessible design in built environments, ethnographer Cassandra Hartblay traces how disabled people in one Russian city narrate experiences of pervasive inaccess, and interprets popular images of failed accessibility as critiques of the Russian state and ablenationalism. In the process, Hartblay asks how disability advocacy movements proceed when ablenationalism co-opts accessibility and calls for a critical global disability studies that pushes back against Euro-American hegemony. Through the stories disabled people tell about access and inaccess, this book examines local terminology used by those with mobility impairments to describe the built environment—a unique lexicon combining translated terms from global disability advocacy with Russophone words inherited from generations of political advocacy. These ethnographic accounts demonstrate the ways vocabularies of disability access spread in friction, taking on dynamic and unexpected meanings in transnational sociopolitical contexts. Access Vernaculars presents a global perspective on the intersection of critical disability studies and sociocultural anthropology.
Labor on the Line: Justice at Work on Assam Tea Plantations
by Anna-Lena WolfLabor on the Line provides insights into the world's largest tea-growing region of Assam. Anna-Lena Wolf examines everyday conceptualizations of justice: how they emerge, become prevalent, transform, and are negotiated by differently positioned actors on Assam's tea plantations. Academics and activists have criticized the conditions on these plantations as a form of bondage, arguing that the persistence of a colonial wage structure—characterized by low cash wages supplemented with in-kind benefits—reinforces laborers' dependence on plantations. But Wolf shows that there is more to the story. Tea plantation laborers and trade unionists formed surprising alliances with managers and plantation owners based on everyday conceptions of justice. All involved favored the old-style plantation at a time when fundamental changes were appearing in the political economy of tea production.Labor on the Line challenges the simplistic notion that dismantling tea plantations would create a better world for tea plantation laborers, by advancing notions of justice in innovative ways. Thanks to generous funding from the Swiss National Science Foundation, the ebook editions of this book are available as open access volumes through the Cornell Open initiative.
The Sewards of New York: A Biography of a Leading American Political Family
by Thomas P. SlaughterThe Sewards of New York shines a light on one of the most important and fascinating political families of the nineteenth century. Through recently discovered family correspondence, Thomas P. Slaughter unveils the inner lives of the Seward family, tracing their joys and sorrows as the nation grappled with rapid expansion and deepening divisions on its path to the Civil War.William Henry Seward, the family's most prominent member, was a state senator, governor, US senator, and secretary of state. Henry, as his family knew him, was often absent from their Auburn, NY, home, in Albany or Washington, DC, and so remained connected to the family through the long letters numbering in the thousands that they exchanged. These writings reveal Henry as a son, brother, husband, and father, as much as they show him as a politician and statesman. But it is his wife, Frances, who is the hub around which this family story revolves. Slaughter explores the extended Auburn family during a half century of profound change in American homes, marriage, and childrearing. With an eye for the provocative and revealing, Slaughter takes us behind the curtain of the early Victorian era's private sphere. He, and the Sewards in their own words, portray life as it was lived by the influential and powerful, but also by many who lived more private lives that are now lost to us. The Sewards of New York paints a rich portrait of an extraordinary family that played a key role in nineteenth-century New York and national politics.
Age of Deception: Cybersecurity as Secret Statecraft (Cornell Studies in Security Affairs)
by Jon R. LindsayAt the heart of cybersecurity lies a paradox: Cooperation makes conflict possible. In Age of Deception, Jon R. Lindsay shows that widespread trust in cyberspace enables espionage and subversion. While such acts of secret statecraft have long been part of global politics, digital systems have dramatically expanded their scope and scale. Yet success in secret statecraft hinges less on sophisticated technology than on political context. To make sense of this, Lindsay offers a general theory of intelligence performance—the analogue to military performance in battle—that explains why spies and hackers alike depend on clandestine organizations and vulnerable institutions. Through cases spanning codebreaking at Bletchley Park during WWII to the weaponization of pagers by Israel in 2024, he traces both continuity and change in secret statecraft. Along the way, he explains why popular assumptions about cyber warfare are profoundly misleading. Offense does not simply dominate defense, for example, because the same digital complexity that expands opportunities for deception also creates potential for self-deception and counterdeception. Provocative and persuasive, Age of Deception offers crucial insights into the future of secret statecraft in cyberspace and beyond.
Island Ablaze and Other Stories: The US Empire in North and South Korean Literatures
by Ruth Barraclough Jae-Yong Kim Jin-Kyung Lee Sang-Kyung LeeIsland Ablaze and Other Stories is an anthology of thirteen stories—eleven from South Korea and two from North Korea—about these countries' complicated relationships with their most important ally and enemy: the United States. Set in times ranging from colonial Korea to the new millennium, these stories offer a look into the many ways that the US empire shapes the lives of Koreans. In "Dawn," schoolgirl sweethearts living under Japanese colonial rule reconnect as young mothers amid celebrations of the attack on Pearl Harbor. "Till We Meet Again" addresses the adoption industry and America's treatment of Korean children following the Korean War. In the title story, a North Korean radio operator must choose between abandoning the soldier she loves or dying with him at the famous Battle of Incheon that turned the tide of the Korean War. From camp towns to sugarcane fields, missionary schools to international flights, Island Ablaze and Other Stories shows everyday Korean life in the shadow of the American empire.
Newport Gardner's Anthem: A Story of Slavery, Struggle, and Survival in Early America
by Edward E. AndrewsNewport Gardner's Anthem explores the remarkable life of Occramer Marycoo, an enslaved African who went on to become one of early America's most important Black leaders. In the mid-eighteenth century, Marycoo was taken from West Africa to Newport, Rhode Island, where he was forced into racial bondage and given a name that symbolized the power that his new city and new enslaver held over him: Newport Gardner. In this powerful book, Edward E. Andrews pieces together newspaper articles, church records, letters, and Gardner's own writings to tell the story of his life. After acquiring his freedom via a winning lottery ticket in 1791, Gardner became a kind of Founding Father for Newport's free Black community. He established and led several Black benevolent organizations that helped the community navigate the complicated waters of freedom as Rhode Island slowly began the process of emancipation. He became a popular educator to young Black Newporters, and also emerged as a key religious figure, serving as a long-standing pillar of Newport's First Congregational Church and later founding an independent Black church in the 1820s. His final act was leading a group of about three dozen Black New Englanders to Liberia, in hopes that a new start in Africa would be better than the discrimination they faced in America. A richly textured account, Newport Gardner's Anthem tells the story of a forgotten Black leader while exploring the new, but tragically limited, opportunities for formerly enslaved people in the post-Revolutionary world.

Happiness Has a Slippery Tail (Literary Translation)
by Abla FarhoudThis novel paints the portrait of a Lebanese family that has settled in Montreal. The central figure is Dounia, a 75-year-old mother and grandmother. Hers is a story of loss—she first leaves her own village to live in her husband’s hometown, and then is wrenched from her homeland, not once but twice, to live in a strange land whose language and customs are foreign to her. Dounia can neither read nor write, and she speaks only Arabic. Illiterate yet perceptive, nourished by Lebanese proverbs and pearls of wisdom, she has a unique and captivating voice. She struggles, yes, but manages to achieve fulfilment in her new world: “My home is where my grandchildren are, clinging to my neck, calling me Sitto Dounia […] in my language. I want to die where my children and my grandchildren live.”Abla Farhoud was an actor and playwright before becoming a novelist in 1998 with the publication of this novel, the French title of which was Le bonheur a la queue glissante, awarded the France-Québec – Philippe Rossillon Prize. Other novels followed, including Le Sourire de la petite Juive (published in English as Hutchison Street), Le dernier des Snoreux, and the posthumous book Havre-Saint-Pierre. Abla Farhoud passed away in 2021.
