Golf's Three Noble Truths

by James Ragonnet

The Buddha's seven years of wandering in search of enlightenment ended in frustration. So did the author's thirty years of traversing golf courses. Neither found what they were looking for until they stopped searching outside and started looking within. The result for James Ragonnet was the kind of "second birthday" Eastern thinkers describe when "you wake up to everything happening around you." Through delightful anecdotes and practical lessons, Ragonnet reveals the power of awareness, balance, and unity to banish the dissatisfaction and stagnation so many golfers experience. He shows how "all golf Buddhas -- Bobby Jones, Jack Nicklaus, Annika Sorenstam, Tiger Woods -- play with their outer and inner eyes wide open," describes his twelfth-green OOGE ("out-of-golf-experience"), and offers readers simple truths that prompt flashes of understanding. These insights invite birdies, drop handicaps, and transform experience both on and off the course.

Golf's Iron Horse: The Astonishing, Record-Breaking Life of Ralph Kennedy

by John Sabino

So many works of golfing history focus on the greats: the best players, the most prestigious championships, the hardest courses, and the like. But most avid golfers are average players, relishing in the joy of the sport itself. In Golf’s Iron Horse, celebrated golf writer John Sabino chronicles the previously untold story of Ralph Kennedy, a golf amateur whose love of the game set him on par to play more courses than anyone before.A founding member of Mamaroneck, New York’s prestigious Winged Foot Golf Club, Kennedy had long been an avid golfer when he met Charles Leonard Fletcher in 1919. When the Englishman told Kennedy that he had played more than 240 courses in his lifetime, Kennedy took it as a challenge and became determined to play more.In a feat that caused the New York Sun to declare him "golf’s Lou Gehrig” in 1935, Kennedy succeeded in beating Fletcher’s record, and then some. He played golf on more than 3,165 different courses in all forty-eight states, nine Canadian provinces, and more than a dozen different countries during his forty-three year love affair with the game. In addition to the 3,165 unique courses he played, the unrelenting Ralph also played golf a total of 8,500 times over his lifetime, the equivalent of teeing it up every day for twenty-three straight years. Lou Gehrig’s seventeen years in professional baseball pales in comparison. This intriguing story includes details of the special conditions under which he was able to play the Augusta National Golf Club and the unique circumstances of his visits to Pebble Beach and the Old Course at St. Andrews. Perfect for golf aficionados, Golf’s Iron Horse will inspire every reader to tee off at a new course.

Golf's Holy War: The Battle for the Soul of a Game in an Age of Science

Just as Michael Lewis&’s Moneyball captured baseball at a technological turning point, Brett Cyrgalis&’s Golf&’s Holy War takes us inside golf&’s clash between its beloved artistic tradition and its analytic future. The world of golf is at a crossroads. As technological innovations displace traditional philosophies, the golfing community has splintered into two deeply combative factions: the old-school teachers and players who believe in feel, artistry, and imagination, and the technical minded who want to remake the game around data. In Golf&’s Holy War, Brett Cyrgalis takes readers inside the heated battle playing out from weekend hackers to PGA Tour pros. At the Titleist Performance Institute in Oceanside, California, golfers clad in full-body sensors target weaknesses in their biomechanics, while others take part in mental exercises designed to test their brain&’s psychological resilience. Meanwhile, coaches like Michael Hebron purge golfers of all technical information, tapping into the power of intuitive physical learning by playing rudimentary games. From historic St. Andrews to manicured Augusta, experimental communes in California to corporatized conferences in Orlando, William James to Ben Hogan to theoretical physics, the factions of the spiritual and technical push to redefine the boundaries of the game. And yet what does it say that Tiger Woods has orchestrated one of the greatest comebacks in sports history without the aid of a formal coach? But Golf&’s Holy War is more than just a book about golf—it&’s a story about modern life and how we are torn between resisting and embracing the changes brought about by the advancements of science and technology. Golfing with God: A Novel of Heaven and Earth

by Roland Merullo

This witty tale is an “engaging story of golf, the after-life and ‘the spiritual education of one soul’” (Publishers Weekly). Herman “Hank” Fins-Winston was a professional golfer destined for greatness. Now he lives in a condominium on the thirteenth fairway of one of heaven’s glorious courses—a fact he finds surprising, since for one reason or another, a fair percentage of golfers never make it to paradise . . . and Hank wasn’t exactly an angel on earth. Hank is having the time of his afterlife, until he’s summoned one idyllic morning to play a round with the Almighty. It seems that God is having some trouble with putting. As they play the heavenly courses, both in paradise and back on earth, Hank comes to realize that what began as a golf lesson has become a true spiritual journey . . . “Merullo, author of the critically acclaimed Revere Beach trilogy, writes with wit and subtlety rather than trying to pound inspiration into our heads with a titanium driver. And, best of all, he gets the golf right: precise, well-constructed descriptions of courses and shot making, revealing a respect for the game itself, not just its potential as metaphor.” —Booklist

Golfing with God: A Novel

by Roland Merullo

In a previous life, Herman "Hank" Fins-Winston had been a golf pro--an excellent teacher of the game who never quite made it on the circuit, having missed his one real shot at greatness. He now lives in a lovely condominium on the thirteenth fairway of one of heaven's 8,187 golf courses. God and His closest companions, you see, play the game often. And though Jesus never bothers to keep score, Buddha never takes a practice swing, and Moses doesn't consider it cheating when he parts the courses' water hazards, they all take the sport very seriously. In heaven, even God replaces His divots. Hank's afterlife takes an unexpected turn when he is summoned to help a player whose game is in a slump. To his dismay, his new pupil is God Himself. Or Herself. Depending on the day. As they play the most heavenly courses in paradise and back on earth, Hank realizes that it's he who's learning the lessons-about fearing failure, about second chances, about the connectedness of all living things, about not taking the next breath for granted, and about our God-given ability to improve ourselves--one stroke at a time.

A Golfer's Life

by Arnold Palmer

There has never been a golfer to rival Arnold Palmer. To the legions of golf fans known around the world as "Arnie's Army," Palmer is a charismatic hero, the winner of sixty-one tournaments on the PGA Tour and still going strong on the Senior PGA Tour. But behind the legend, there is the private Palmer--a man of wit, compassion, loyalty, and true grit in the face of personal adversity. Golf-crazy as far back as he can remember, Arnie followed his dad, "Deacon" Palmer, the head greenskeeper, around the Latrobe Country Club fairways; as a youth he played at dawn before the club members arrived (the only time he was allowed on the course); by the time he graduated from high school he was headed for the national circuit. His rise to fame was meteoric, and by the 1960s he had emerged as one of the few American athletes the public truly cared about--a vibrant, daring, handsome sports celebrity who attracted wild crowds and enormous television audiences whenever he played and whose charisma propelled the explosion of enthusiam for golf in the sixties.Writing with the humor and candor that are as much his trademark as his unique golf swing, Palmer narrates the deeply moving story of his life both on and off the links. He recounts his friendships (and rivalries) with greats of the game, including Jack Nicklaus, his enduringly happy marriage with Winnie, his legendary charges to triumph and his titanic disasters, and his valiant battle against cancer. The Golfer's Alphabet

by A. B. Frost W.G. Van Sutphen

The timeless humor contained in this book first published in 1898, and its concern with the ever-rising popularity of golfing prompted its current reprinting. The distinctive signature of A. B. Frost on a cartoon or painting is the cause of much excitement at today's art exhibits and more so when it makes a rare appearance at an auction. Original works of this well-known artist are scarce and first editions of the 89 books he illustrated during his brilliant career are fast becoming collectors' items. Frost's biggest contribution to the world in giving visual realization to characters in a book is his unforgettable drawings of Br'er Rabbit and Uncle Remus (Uncle Remus and his Friends by Joel Chandler Harris). He has also illustrated the works of such notable authors as Charles Dickens (The Pickwick Papers), Mark Twain (Tom Sawyer Abroad, Tom Sawyer Detective and other Stories), former U . S . President Theodore Roosevelt (The Wilderness Hunter), and Lewis Carroll (Rhyme? And Reason?).
Works by Frost have also appeared in Harpers, Scribners, Colliers, Century, and Puck magazines. Frost showed a versatility with humor in words as well as in drawings by authoring several books. In addition, he was an accomplished painter, notably of hunting scenes. These lesser known though no less accomplished works were compiled in an 1895 Scribner portfolio, "Shooting Pictures," many of which still grace household calendars. Upon his death at 77, Frost was described as the "dean of our [American] illustrators." His obituary in the New York Evening Post in 1928 further eulogized, " Down through the ages, when he and we are gone, his genius will twinkle on in Huck and Tom and Ole Br'er Rabbit. What price monuments of stone?"
