Can students download books by themselves?

Yes! Students can download books on their own if they have either student logins or Individual Memberships.

Student logins now allow students to acccess and download any books shared with them by their teachers.

And this guide will provide step-by-step directions and screen shots for assigning student logins.

Here is how to provide a full Individual Membership to a student who is on an organization account. A sponsor on the account can follow these steps to provide an Activation ID to the student:

  1. Log into your Bookshare account.  
  2. Select the "My Organization" link from your My Bookshare section.  
  3. Select the "Members" link and place a check mark next to the student's name.  
  4. Select the "Add Individual Membership" button at the bottom of the page. 

On the next screen, you will be given the option to email or download and print instructions for the student to register for Bookshare.   

Email or send the printed instructions to the student's parent or guardian, or directly to the student if they are 18 years or older.   They will complete the sign up process and receive confirmation from Bookshare.

If a student does not have an Organizational or Individual Membership with Bookshare, they can sign up independently by selecting the "Sign Up" link from the top of this page and completing the online registration process.  

Note that for students under the age of 18 years, a parent or guardian must complete the process. All US students' Memberships are free through an award from the U.S. Department of Education Office of Special Education.
